Learn All You Need to Know Roland Asp, CET Manager of Installation Standards National Fire Sprinkler Association 10 printing 5
Rationale Jurisdictions are adopting residential sprinkler ordinances, and water utilities must become familiar with the specifics of these systems This Webinar will provide the water purveyor with information on the topics that need to be addressed in preparing a jurisdiction for residential fire sprinklers 11 Learning Objectives As a result of this presentation attendees will: Understand the basics of residential sprinkler systems for one and two family dwellings Recognize how residential fire sprinkler systems impact water suppliers 12 printing 6
Agenda Why Residential Fire Sprinklers? Overview of Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems for One and Two Family 13 America s Residential Fire Problem 14 printing 7
America s Residential Fire Problem Every year, approx. 400,000 fires occur in residential occupancies resulting in thousands of deaths. 80 percent of structural fires occur in single family homes (300,000) 83 percent of civilian fire deaths occur in residential occupancies Residential fire sprinklers are extremely effective at countering these statistics 15 Purpose of NFPA 13D 16 printing 8
NFPA 13D Applies to one and two family homes including town houses 17 Purpose of NFPA 13D To aid in the detection and control of residential fires, providing improved protection against injury and loss of life Improve the chance for occupants to escape Cost effective 18 printing 9
Types of Systems Stand Alone Sprinkler System: is a sprinkler system where the above ground piping serves only the fire sprinklers. a single common water service may provide service to both fire sprinkler and domestic systems. 19 Types of Systems Multipurpose Piping Sprinkler System: is a piping system serving both domestic needs (in excess of 1 fixture) and fire sprinklers from a common piping system. 20 printing 10
Types of Systems Passive Purge Sprinkler System: A type of sprinkler system that serves a single toilet in addition to the fire sprinklers Also known as flow through 21 Water Supply Arrangements 22 printing 11
Water Supply Arrangements 23 Water Supply Arrangements 24 printing 12
How Much Water? All sprinklers within a compartment to a maximum of 2 Duration 10 minutes (7 minutes for small homes): 2 sprinkler flowing = gpm 26 gpm x 10 minutes = Gallons 25 Domestic Allowance No domestic allowance unless single system to 2 dwelling units 26 printing 13
Comparing Demand Calculation to Static Pressure 13D specifically says to use the static pressure for all methods as long as water main is 4 inch or larger New in 2016 edition implied in earlier editions 27 Water meters, if required, are sized dependent on friction loss and the calculations there is no minimum size. Sizing Water Meters 28 printing 14
Sizing Water Meters Table may be used even if flow exceeds the meter s rated continuous flow Higher pressure loss specified by manufacturer shall be used in place of table. 29 Sizing Water Meters Note on maximum rated flow of water meters: A research project conducted by Fire Protection Research Foundation, "Residential Fire Sprinklers Water Usage and Water Meter Performance Study showed that domestic water meters can by flowed above their maximum rated flow successfully and without damage. 30 printing 15
Summary NFPA 13 provides effective life safety Most fires are in our Homes Costs need to be controlled Cost are borne by homeowners 31 Questions Roland Asp Resources M14 Manual M31 Manual NFPA Standard 13D 32 printing 16

Please include your name and specify to whom you are addressing the question. 33 Backflow Prevention and Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems Sean Perry National Sales Manager Fire and Waterworks Watts Water Technologies 34 printing 17
Rationale Backflow Prevention, what is it? Review different types of residential fire sprinkler cross connection control (CCC)requirements. 35 Learning Objectives As a result of this presentation What is backflow prevention? Why is a cross connection control program needed? When is it needed? What type of options are seen nationally? 36 printing 18
Agenda What is Backflow Prevention Why needed How backflow happens How to protect against it Different types of backflow prevention options for use in residential fire sprinkler systems. 37 What is Backflow Prevention? Backflow is the unwanted reversal of flow in the distribution system Plumbing cross connections, which are defined as actual or potential connections between a potable and non potable water supply, constitute a serious public health hazard U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 38 printing 19
Why is a Cross Connection Control Program Needed? Backflow can happen one of two ways. From backpressure or backsiphonage. 39 Backsiphonage Commercial Example 40 printing 20
SOLUTION: CONTAINMENT PROTECTION RP Backflow Preventer POINT OF USE PROTECTION AVB Backflow Preventer 41 Backpressure Commercial Example SPRINKLER SYSTEM FIRE DEPT. CONNECTION CHECK VALVE UL/FM TEST & DRAIN LINE OUTSIDE HYDRANT PUMP HOUSE AT 125 LB. ALARM CHECK 75 LBS. CITY MAIN POTABLE WATER SUPPLY POND/RIVER AUXILIARY NON- POTABLE WATER SUPPLY 42 printing 21

CITY MAIN POTABLE WATER SUPPLY AHJ APPROVED BACKFLOW PREVENTER POND/RIVER AUXILIARY NON- POTABLE WTER SUPPLY 43 When is it Needed? All municipalities with public water supply systems should have crossconnection control programs. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 44 printing 22
What Backflow is Needed? Always up to the authority having jurisdiction. 3 main types of residential systems Stand Alone Multipurpose Passive Purge National requirements are not in effect. Residential sprinklers not required everywhere Each jurisdiction may require different backflow prevention practices 45 Inside the Building Typical Stand Alone Commercial System Outside the Building 46 printing 23
Stand Alone System Based on degree of hazard assessed by the AHJ Dual Check Double Check Double Detector Check Valve Reduced Pressure Assembly 47 Multipurpose System Based on local enforcement Passive Purge Dual Check Double Check RP (if chemical agent is present) Nothing or typical meter protection already enforced 48 printing 24
Passive Purge System No separate backflow assembly or device required Typical discharge into toilet tank 49 Fire Sprinkler Systems Save Lives As Roland stated: 80% of structural fires are single family homes and 83% of civilian fire deaths occur in residential occupancies Enforcement of residential systems is growing but according to my research they are not used nationwide yet. Backflow requirements are widely inconsistent, always check with your local authority having jurisdiction. Reference NFPA and AWWA manuals for guidance. 50 printing 25
