1 WHAT THE RATINGS MEAN: The New Zealand Standard for classifiying, rating, and performance testing of Fire Extinguishers (AS/NZ1850:1997), was introduced at the request of manufacturers, who wanted a method to determine the capability, and suitability of an extinguisher on various classes of fire. The rating of an Extinguisher is showen by a number, which indicates the approximate relative extinguishing potential of the extinguisher, under prescribed test conditions. The resulting classification, and performance rated value, are shown on the label of each extinguisher. ie: 2A: 40B: E This rating is shown to assist the purchaser to select the appropriate type and size of extinguisher, for the expected hazard. FIRE EXTINGUISHER CLASSIFICATIONS: Extinguishers are classified by one or more of the following letters, designating the class or classes of fire they have found to be most effective on. CLASS A - Ordinary combustible fires are the most common type of fire, and are designated Class A. These occur when a solid, organic material such as wood, cloth, rubber, or some plastics become heated to their flash point and ignite. At this point the material undergoes combustion and will continue burning as long as the four components of the fire tetrahedron (heat, fuel, oxygen, and the sustaining chemical reaction) are available. CLASS B - Flammable liquids are designated Class B. These fires follow the same basic fire tetrahedron (heat, fuel, oxygen, chemical reaction) as ordinary combustible fires, except that the fuel in question is a flammable liquid such as petrol. A solid stream of water should never be used to extinguish this type because it can cause the fuel to scatter, spreading the flames. CLASS E - Electrical fires are fires involving potentially energised electrical equipment. This sort of fire may be caused by, for example, short-circuiting machinery or overloaded electrical cables. These fires can be a severe hazard to firefighters using water or other conductive agents: Electricity may be conducted from the fire, through water, the firefighter s body, and then earth with the resulting electrical shocks potentially causing death. CLASS F - Fires that involve cooking oils or fats are designated Class F. Though such fires are technically a subclass of the flammable liquid class, the special characteristics of these types of fires are considered important enough to recognise separately. PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
2 CLASS A FIRE RATINGS (CRIB FIRE): The A Rating is determined by the extinguishers ability to extinguish a Crib Fire using specified sizes of wood, fuel and tray. 6A: 80B: E = Extinguished a size 6 crib fire. Rating No of Wood Layers of Tray Size (mm) Fuel Litres Pieces Wood 1A X 525 X A X 525 X A X 680 X A X 680 X A X 810 X A X 960 X CLASS B FIRE RATINGS (FLAMMABLE LIQUID FIRE): The B Rating is determined by the extinguishers ability to extinguish a Fire using a flammable liquid fire of specified area, and volume. 6A: 80B: E = Extinguished a size 80 tray of fire. Rating Tray Size (mm) Fuel Content (L) 2B 675 x B 1075 x B 1525 x B 2150 x B 2650 x B 3030 x B 3725 x B 4300 x CLASS E FIRE RATINGS (ELECTRICAL NON-CONDUCTIVITY): The E Rating is determined by the extinguishers ability to pass a Non-Conductivity test. An extinguuisher can only obtain an E rating, if it has already established an A, B or F rating. 6A: 80B: E = Electrical Non-Conductivity
3 CLASS F FIRE RATINGS (FAT FIRE): The F Rating is determined by the extinguishers ability to extinguish a cooking oil fire, using specified, pan and oil content. 3A: 4F = Extinguished 75 litres of oil. Rating Pan Diameter (mm) Volume of Oil (L) 1F F F F rectangular tray 75 (approx) FLAMEFIGHTER ABE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: AS/NZS 1841:5 Steel Cylinder Powder Coated Red 85% MAP (Mono Ammonium-Phosphate) Powder Stainless Steel Gauge and Safety Pin Seal Complete with Nozzle, Brass Chrome Valve Assembly Complete with Bracket Flamefighter II 1kg (SKU:8425) Rating: 1A:20B:E Flamefighter II 1.5kg (SKU:8411) Rating: 2A:20B:E Flamefighter II 2kg (SKU:8412) Rating: 3A:30B:E Flamefighter II 2.5kg (SKU:8413) Rating: 3A:40B:E Flamefighter II 4.5kg (SKU:8414) Rating: 4A:60B:E Flamefighter II 6kg (SKU:8415) Rating: 4A:80B:E Flamefighter 9kg (SKU:8416) Rating: 6A:80B:E
