2 The Sharonville Fire Department Mission Statement: The Sharonville Fire Department is committed to improving the quality of life of those in need of our services by delivering exceptional Life Safety, Public Education, and Fire Prevention by all means possible.

3 Status of the Fire Department In 2012, we have been able to put in service a new Medic Unit, a Re-Mounted Engine, and a new Chemical Truck. With the remaining funds from the 2011 FEMA Grant, we were able to purchase a Forcible Door Simulator and a Bullex Fire Extinguisher Trainer. The remounted engine went in service in January of this year. We took the body off of our 1990 Sutphen Pumper and had it refurbished and repainted. A new Spartan Chassis was purchased and the refurbished body was then mounted to the new chassis. By going through this process, we were able to save approximately $175,000. In April, our new Braun Medic Unit arrived and was put in service. This unit was purchased to replace a 2002 Excellance unit. When this unit was ordered, two other departments of the Northeast Fire Collaborative purchased the same unit. By doing this, we saved approximately $13,000. Our department continues to prioritize community involvement. Through events like Touch-A-Truck, Cruising on the Loop, and Charity Fest, we strive to interact with our residents whenever possible. This year, unfortunately, we had to cancel Touch-A-Truck due to the extremely hot weather in June. We are planning to once again have it next year and it will be bigger and better than ever. We continually seek new ways to educate Sharonville citizens regarding fire safety. With the addition of our fire extinguisher trainer, we can teach the proper way to use a fire extinguisher in a safe and controlled manner. We no longer need to fill a pan with fuel and ignite it to do the training and after we are done, figure out where to dispose of the used fuel. The new fire extinguisher trainer is more economical to use and it is safer for the environment. The new Chemical Truck was purchased through a Department of Homeland Security Grant. This vehicle has 2,500 lbs of dry chemical, and 150 lbs of MetalX powder on it for use if we are dispatched to a chemical, petroleum, or metal fire. The Sharonville Fire Department makes every effort to operate in an efficient and cost effective manner. We are committed to keeping our expenses down without compromising our commitment to the citizens and businesses of Sharonville. This is why we continue to apply for grants or look for alternative ways of funding large purchases Summit Pumper This body of our old pumper was remounted onto a new chassis. This saved approximately $175,000.

4 2012 Ford Chemical Truck Vehicle carries 2,500 lbs of Purple K dry powder and 150 lbs of Metelx powder. Truck was purchased with Homeland Security Funds Braun Medic Unit Vehicle was purchased in conjunction with the Northeast Fire Collaborative Departments. This saved the department $13,000 off the total cost of the unit.

5 New Forcible Entry Simulator The simulator was purchased in order to simulate forcing a door on an emergency scene. It is constructed with heavy gage steel and has replaceable parts that we can make ourselves. It is getting more difficult to find houses or businesses that are vacant and will allow us to train in them. By having this, we can do the training at our fire stations without worrying about the weather. This was bought with remaining FE- MA Grant money. The cost of the simulator was $6,895. Fire Extinguisher Trainer With some remaining FEMA Grant money, we were able to purchase a new Fire Extinguisher Trainer. This trainer can be taken to any business and set up in a manner of minutes. It uses propane and water instead of dry chemical extinguishers and diesel fuel. We used this trainer this year during our open houses and it was a big hit with both the parents and the kids. The cost of this trainer was $7,450.

6 Labor / Management The Fire Department administration and the Sharonville Professional Firefighters Local 4498 continue to enjoy an excellent working relationship. Throughout 2012, the Fire Department Honor Guard, which is made up of Local 4498 members, participated in many events throughout the city. Events included the Scarlet Oaks Fire Academy Graduations in July and December, Ohio Fire Chief s Convention, Memorial Day Program, July 4th Parade, Veteran's Day Program at Princeton High School, Veteran's Day Wreath laying at Sharonville Elementary, and all three of the fire department s open houses. These are some of the requests that they receive during the year. During the last week of October 2012, Local 4498 sponsored their fourth annual City Luncheon for employees. As in the past, it was well attended by the employees. Local 4498 also purchases all of the food for our open houses. Sharonville Fire Department Club Although the Fire Department Club does not meet regularly, they continue to support the department in many ways. The Club purchases the instructional material and certification cards for First Aid and CPR classes. They continue to sponsor the Robert J. Yeager Scholarship Fund. Since 1983, there have been 35 scholarships given to high school seniors desiring to continue their educations. The 2012 winners were Emily Klein, who will be attending Cincinnati State, and Ashley Rasnick, who will be attending Miami University. This scholarship is funded by the annual Golf Outing which is held in June. as well as the profits from the Charity Fest booth. Community Involvement As stated earlier, the Sharonville Fire Department continues to look for ways to stay involved in the community. Hosting First Aid/ CPR classes, installing car seats, and speaking at businesses and schools are some of the ways we keep in touch with our citizens. Our department starts off each new school year by placing units in all of the school zones for the first week to remind drivers that school is back in session. This year we served local businesses by attending events at the Civil War Days at Sharon Woods, the Stewart Elementary Spring and Fall Festivals, Acosta s Wounded Warrior Picnic, Public Education Festival at Miami Jacobs, Norfolk Southern Family Day and Ford Motor Company Family Day, just to name a few. 7 Community Involvement (con t) Three times a week, fire department members tutor classes at Sharonville Elementary School. By working with the school, we are able to assist them whenever students need some extra help with their school work. It also gives the students a chance to interact with a firefighter so if we are needed, they will not be afraid of us. If you need help with this, we are happy to come and check your detectors and change the batteries free of charge. Please call to make an appointment to have this done. In 2012, we have installed new smoke detector batteries in 60 homes and in all 65 apartments on Greensfelder Lane. Car Seats Studies show that approximately 80% of car seats are improperly installed. Our department is striving to improve this staggering statistic. If someone needs to have a car seat inspected or installed, they can call to make an appointment. In 2012, our eight car seat technicians installed 139 car seats. First Aid Classes Lt. Scott Holland Tutoring 1st graders at Sharonville Elementary Smoke Detectors The Sharonville Fire Department continues to offer free smoke detectors to the residents of Sharonville. If you are in need of a smoke detector, please call to schedule a time to have them installed. For the first 10 months of 2012, we have installed 86 smoke detectors in 40 homes. All residents should check their smoke detectors and change their batteries twice a year, when we change the clocks to daylight savings time. We offer CPR, AED, and First Aid courses based upon the American Safety and Health institute (ASHI) recommendations. These classes are open to any business, group, or individual who requests it. We also provide fire extinguisher training, home inspections, fire safety presentations and group safety talks to anyone who is interested. 8 Training The Sharonville Fire Department continues to provide ongoing personnel training in the latest methods and requirements for the field. The department is officially qualified as a teaching department, which means that all training provided is credited towards member certifications. Some examples of the internal training that occurs throughout the year include EMS, high angle rope rescue, vehicle extrication, fire attack, ventilation, and hose evolutions. We continue to train with the members of the North East Fire Collaborative (NEFC) on a monthly basis. Equipment Maintenance (con t) At this time it was decided to make a switch to a new style of coupling for our large diameter hose. We were using a threaded coupling and it was decided to go with a Storz coupling. This coupling attaches with a quarter turn instead of having to thread the ends together. It makes coupling a hose faster and easier. With more than half of our current hose being taken care of by warranty, it was cheaper to make the switch now than waiting until later. Many of our neighboring departments have already made the switch to these couplings. Equipment Maintenance We strive to keep the cost of equipment repairs as low as possible by doing inhouse preventive maintenance, and sending equipment out for repairs only as a last resort. Work done by our personnel includes trouble-shooting electrical problems, rebuilding valves on the fire apparatus, and general maintenance to all three stations. Each year we are required by NFPA to test all of our ground ladders and our aerial tower. By working with the other Northeast Fire Collaborative departments, we are able to do this testing at approximately half the cost to the departments. This is a considerable savings on this type of testing. We are also required to test every section of fire hose on the department. This year we found a manufacturing defect on more than half of the hose we own. This hose was sent back to be replaced or re-tested, as it was covered under warranty. Hydrants Twice a year all fire hydrants are checked to make sure they operate smoothly and are not leaking. This is done in the spring and the fall. Each hydrant is operated and the threads are greased and if needed, the hydrant is painted. Throughout the year, the hydrants are spot-checked to ensure that they are not obstructed or damaged. When a hydrant needs to be repaired, we send our members out to do the repair. We try to do most of the work with our members, but if a repair is such that it cannot be handled internally, then we call the Hamilton County Public Works to do the work. They provide this service at a reduced cost. During the first ten months of 2012, our members have repaired 31 hydrants at a savings of $4,688. Contractors have repaired 19 hydrants at a cost of $5,619. Insurance paid for one hydrant at a cost of $9,316.

9 Fire Department Activity Fire Runs The number of fire runs for the Sharonville Fire Department has increased steadily since During the first ten months of 2012, we had 1199 fire calls. This is an increase of 9% over the same period in 2011 (1,089 calls) and 16% over 2010 (1,009 calls). In 2011 we had a total of 1,340 fire calls, which is an increase of 8% over the 1,228 calls in During the first ten months of 2012, we received mutual aid 179 times from 16 different organizations. This compares to 148 times for the same period in During the first ten months of 2012, we responded into our neighboring communities 163 times, compared to 164 times in In 2012, the three highest fire loss incidents were; Thames Place Structure Fire $150,000 Fire Loss 1711 Torrey Court Structure Fire $ 75,000 Fire Loss Willfleet Drive Structure Fire $ 17,000 Fire Loss The total fire loss for the first ten months of 2012 was $339,800 and the total value of the properties involved was $3,691,010. 10 EMS Runs EMS runs continue to account for the majority of our run volume. Usually, at least two of our EMS units are out simultaneously, and sometimes all three are in service. For the first ten months of 2012, we made 1785 EMS runs, for an decrease of 5% over the same period in 2011 (1870 runs). District 1 covers everything between the western corporation line on Chesterdale Road to Rockfield Court on the east. It also covers the area from the northern corporation line on Crescentville Road to the southern corporation line at Sharon Road. (Blue area) District 2 covers the area from Rockfield Court west to Reed Hartman Highway. It also covers the area from the northern corporation line on Crescentville Road to the southern corporation line on Reading Road. (Pink area) District 3 covers the area from the North/West corporation line West to Reading Road. It also covers the area south to Kemper Road. (Orange area) District 10 covers Interstate 75. 14 PERSONNEL We continually recruit quality personnel into our organization. Many of our part-time employees have completed Medic school within the last year and are now running on the department as Medics. We also have a number of part-time employees who are currently in Medic school and should complete it sometime next year. Presently, there are 68 members on the department - 38 full-time, 29 part-time, and 1 part-time administrative clerk.
