1 International Fire Code 2006 Requirements for Construction Plan Reviews of Commercial and Multi-Family Structures Please note this is not an all-inclusive list. The type and complexity of your project may require additional details or engineering by a state licensed design professional. Failure to provide the minimum information required for plan review will result in plans being rejected or result in delays in the plan review process. The normal time frame for a plan review is ten (10) working days. Failure by the AHJ to identify a discrepancy during the plan review, DOES NOT grant the permit applicant the right to violate the fire code. Any fire code violation viewed by the fire code official must be corrected before final compliance inspection. All projects are subject to periodic field inspections and a final compliance inspection. An occupancy permit will not be issued until all requirements have been met. 1) Permit Required: Unless exempt or otherwise approved, a permit shall be obtained prior to beginning any construction or installation regulated by section Required Construction Permits, of the 2006 International Fire Code; A separate permit is required for each system, e.g. A design including two wet pipe fire sprinkler systems and one-pre-action system, will require a total of four permits three fire sprinkler permits and one fire alarm permit; Permit applications are available at the Bridgeport Charter Township Building Department; Permits shall be kept on the job site at all times and shall be readily available for inspection by the fire code official. 2) Construction Documents shall comply with the 2006 International Fire Code, sec Construction Documents, this document, and the following: a) Fire alarm systems NFPA 72, 2007 ed., National Fire Alarm Code, annex A ; b) Fire sprinkler sprinklers: i) NFPA 13, 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, Chapter 22 Plans and Calculations; ii) NFPA 13D 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler in One-and Two- Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes, annex A.4.8; iii) NFPA 13R 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems in Residential Occupancies up to and Including Four Stories in Height, section 6.2, Working Plans. c) Standpipe and Hose Systems NFPA 14, 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, Chapter 8, Plans and Calculations;

2 d) Fire Pumps NFPA 20, 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection, section 5.2, Approval Required; e) Underground Fire Lines NFPA 24, 2007 ed., Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and their Appurtenances, Section 4.1 Plans; f) Commercial Cooking Fire Suppression Systems NFPA 96, 2008 ed., Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire Protection of Commercial Cooking Operations, section 10.9 Review and Certification; g) Clean Agent Fire Suppression System Documents NFPA 2001, 2008 ed., Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing System, Section Working Plans; h) Other systems submittals shall include plans, cut-sheets, calculations and other documents sufficient to verify that the system complies with applicable sections of the 2006 International Fire Code as adopted by the Township of Bridgeport. System designs not covered by the International Fire Code, shall comply with the applicable NFPA standards and/ or other applicable regulations. 3) General: a) Three complete sets of drawings and one submittal book (containing applicable cut-sheets, calculations, and other documents) shall be submitted for review. b) When field changes are made, as-built drawings shall be provided prior to the start of system acceptance testing. 4) Plans: a) Color plans are preferred as they simplify identification of system components and circuits; b) A summary description of the work to be permitted should be included on the first page of the plans: c) Note on the plans, AHJ is the Bridgeport Township Fire Department; d) Note the applicable codes under which the system is to be reviewed as of this revision date, these include: i) 2006 International Fire Code, as adopted by the Township of Bridgeport; ii) Latest edition of the applicable NFPA standard(s); iii) Other applicable statutes, codes and standards e) Plans shall be drawn in a clearly legible and professional manner; f) Plans shall indicate the job name, address, suite number, phase and/ or description of job; g) Plans shall indicate Type of Construction; h) Plans shall indicate the Use Group Classification for all parts of the building;

3 i) Plans shall identify the Occupancy and Number of Occupants on every floor (including basements) and all rooms or spaces; j) Plans shall show Means of Egress calculations used to determine exit requirements; k) Plans shall be drawn to scale (1/8 = 1 0 preferred) scale shall be indicated; l) Plans shall indicate any fire separations in the floor, ceiling and walls required by the code; m) Plans shall indicate location of all exit signs and emergency lighting; n) Plans shall include the Fire Department Key Box (Knox Box) location. Application for Knox Box is located at the Bridgeport Fire Department. Fire Code Officials will help to determine the size of the Knox Box for the occupancy in accordance with Section 506 of the 2006 International Fire Code; o) Ceiling height must be indicated; p) North shall be indicated; q) A legend identifying each symbol, component, make and model number, and quantity shall be provided; r) Symbols shall conform to the 2006 ed. of NFPA 170, Standard for Fire Safety and Emergency Symbols; s) Plans shall indicate the location of current and proposed fire hydrant locations; t) Construction documents shall be prepared by a registered design professional; u) Room name and/ or numbers, and room use shall be identified; 5) Specific Submittals: a) Fire Alarm Systems: i) In addition to the requirements of NFPA 72, 2007 ed., National Fire Alarm Code, annex A , the following shall be provided: (1) Calculations for each power supply shall be submitted; (Show how the existing power supplies were determined sufficient and/ or upgraded to support the modification.) (2) Point to point wiring and end-of-line (EOL) resistors shall be shown on plans;

4 (3) Pre-Testing is required: Before requesting final acceptance of the system, the applicant shall furnish a written statement that the system has been installed in accordance with the approved plans and has been tested in accordance with the manufacturer s published instructions and the appropriate NFPA standards. This statement shall be in one of the following forms, with the permit number clearly noted: (a) A letter on the alarm contractor s letterhead; or, (b) A preprinted form intended for such use; or, (c) A Record of Completion form in accordance with NFPA 72, 2007 ed., section 4.5 Documentation ii) In duct smoke detectors connected to the fire alarm system shall be installed in accordance with the approved plans and tested in accordance with the manufacturer s published instructions and NFPA 72, 2007 ed., Table (g) (4) Test Methods (Air duct detectors shall be tested or inspected to ensure device will sample the air stream. The test shall be in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions.) (1) The following must be submitted to the Bridgeport Fire Department (Attn: Fire Marshal), with the Permit number indicated as part of the final acceptance of the system: (a) A copy of the manufacturer s instruction describing the test methods and the acceptable range; (b) The individual measurements and differential calculations for each unit. The measurements and results must be on letterhead, signed by a representative of the fire alarm or HVAC contractor. b) Fire Sprinkler Systems: i) Water supplies shall be protected from contamination by a RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone water backflow valve) installed between the water supply and the fire sprinkler system (Contact the Bridgeport Township Water Department at (989) , for specifications and requirements); (1) A copy of the Backflow Prevention Assembly Test and Maintenance Report must be submitted to the Bridgeport Fire Department (Attn: Fire Marshal) and Bridgeport Township Water Department (Attn: DPW Supervisor). ii) Plans shall include flow test results, working drawings with pipe sizes, spacing of branch lines and sprinkler heads; iii) Plans shall indicate sprinkler head type and hanger plan; iv) Visual inspections must be scheduled prior to installation of ceiling tiles or other visual obstructions. Unauthorized items attached to the sprinkler piping must be eliminated prior to approval. Visual inspections should coincide with the hydrostatic pressure tests, where applicable. (1) Main Drain test results and as-built drawings (if applicable) must be submitted prior to final acceptance.

5 c) Hood Suppression Systems: i) Show all piping, system detectors, manual-pull, class K extinguishers, placard, fuel shut-off device(s) and tank locations on plans; (1) A floor plan of the area indicating means of egress and component locations must be submitted. ii) An audible alarm and visual indicator shall be provided to show the system has activated; iii) Make-up air and fuel sources under the hood must shut-off upon activation exhaust fan(s) stay on; iv) Include manufacturer s nozzle application and installation sheet(s); v) Provide complete appliance descriptions, appliance layouts, cooking area dimensions (depth x width), hood shape and dimensions (depth x width), duct dimensions (depth x width) and nozzle height as necessary for proper selection and location of nozzles. d) Fire Service Mains: i) Fire Service Mains, Fire Hydrants and Fire Department Connections shall be installed in accordance with the International Fire Code 2006 ed., applicable NFPA standards and local codes and ordinances. ii) The following list may not include all requirements and is subject to modification. It is the responsibility of the designer/ installer to follow all applicable codes and standards. (1) Plans shall be drawn in a clearly legible and professional manner; (2) Plans shall indicate job name, address, suite number, phase and/ or description of the job; (3) North shall be indicated; (4) Plans shall be drawn to scale (1/8 = 1 0 preferred) scale shall be indicated; (5) Fire lanes shall be identified on plans; (6) Building height shall be indicated on plans; (7) The following details shall be shown, as applicable, on the plans (a) Thrust-block; (b) Embedment; (c) Vault (if present); (d) Riser; (e) Fire Department Connection (FDC) and related piping; (f) Backflow Prevention; (g) Piping; (h) Other related details.

6 e) Stationary Storage Battery System: i) Provide documentation showing how the system complies with, or is exempt from, each requirement of Section 608 of the 2006 International Fire Code. d) Storage of Flammable and Combustible Liquids: i) Provide documentation showing how the system complies with, or is exempt from, each requirement of Section 3404 of the 2006 International Fire Code and other applicable codes, standards, and regulations. e) Other Systems: i) Provide documentation showing how the system complies with, or is exempt from, each applicable requirement of the 2006 International Fire Code and other applicable codes, standards and regulations.
