1 LABOR MATTERS NOVEMBER 2016 Issue # Labor Matters November 2016 SEIU FAMILIES ENJOY FALLFESTIVITIES! IN THIS ISSUE Members Make FallFest 2016 a Success! By Dana Gentry Thanks to SEIU Nevada members who joined us at Union Hall for FallFest 2016, a day filled with food, fun and prizes! We enjoyed music provided by Final Source Productions and the fine Mexican cuisine of Tacos El Sinaloense. Our raffle winners went home with an array of prizes, including Einstein Bagels and Panera gift cards, gift baskets filled with goodies and two Apple Watches! Looking forward to next year and to seeing you there! SEIU Nevada to Help Homeless What began six years ago as an effort by SEIU NV staff to put Christmas Party leftovers to good use is growing into an annual event to benefit 250 homeless Las Vegans. This year SEIU NV hopes to partner with Clark County to maximize the outreach efforts. Please drop off your donations warm coats and blankets - through December 16 th at our new Union Hall. You can also contribute cash to help with bag lunches to be delivered December 19 th. Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays! The Scruffy Men of No Shave November! SEIU Nevada Organizer Randy Peters is just one of the fine gents taking part in No-Shave November, just one of the many events marking Men s Health Month Upcoming Events Saturday, December 10 Know Your Rights Training 10 a.m. - Noon Contract Training Noon to 1:30 p.m. Page 3
2 LABOR MATTERS NOVEMBER 2016 Issue # 2 Organizer Spotlight We re On the Move SEIU Nevada is in transit! November is moving month for our Union as we make our way to new digs at 2250 S. Rancho Drive #165. Our new Union Hall is conveniently located on the Northeast corner of Rancho Drive and Sahara, just one block west of I-15. Official moving day is November 18 th and we ll be settling in during Thanksgiving week. Phone and remain the same so please feel free to reach out should you need assistance. Will Pregman is one of the newest organizers at SEIU Nevada. Will's family moved to Las Vegas from Bridgeport, Connecticut when he was three years old. Will is a graduate of Coronado High and UNLV, where he earned a degree in Political Science and excelled on the debate team. A volunteer stint with iamerica enabled Will to work with SEIU Nevada staff, who recognized his potential and hired him in March. Will enjoys the gratification of helping people address issues in the workplace and solve problems. Will says his biggest challenge is overcoming his introverted nature! Will credits a UNLV professor with turning him on to politics, by encouraging him to view it not as a sterile, detached system, but rather, as a means to an end that affects us personally. When a close friend who worked a low-wage job experienced disability and family problems, Will became inspired to affect change in the world. And we are so grateful! SEIU NV ORGANIZER WILL PREGMAN
3 LABOR MATTERS NOVEMBER 2016 Issue # It s Movember! Men s Health Month is Here! If the men in your life are looking a little scruffy this month, there s no cause for alarm! It s November, the month when men eschew their shaving equipment for a good cause. Some men find it hard to ask for help you know, like asking for directions. Now, men are growing moustaches and beards for thirty days in an effort to inspire real conversations and raise money for men s health awareness, in particular prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. It s all through the work of The Movember Foundation, a global organization committed to changing the face of men s health. Encourage a man in your life to take his health in his hands. It may save his life. But he still won t ask for directions. For more information, go to
4 LABOR MATTERS NOVEMBER 2016 Issue # 4 SEIU Nevada members and officers enjoy great tips from Organizing Director Peter Nguyen and Contract Rep Bruce Yarwood. Clark County Employees! What Matters to You? Take Our Bargaining Survey! It s not too late to make your voice heard! Take our Bargaining Survey at to-you-clark-county-bargaining-survey- SEIU Nevada Enjoys Membership Surge, Record Low Drops membership and decrease in drops? SEIU Nevada Enjoys Membership Surge FAST FACTS 1366 New Members Year-to-date 10/31/ New members 2013 SEIU Nevada is pleased to announce October ended with the lowest number of membership drops in a decade. 106 workers dropped their membership during October 2016, a dramatic decrease from previous years. SEIU Nevada added 101 new members in October, resulting in a net loss of five members for the month. Year-to-date, SEIU Nevada has grown by 1,366 members. The Union is on track this year to more than double the membership growth it enjoyed just three years ago in What's behind the significant increase in SEIU Nevada President Cherie Mancini says she believes it's the Union s commitment to member service, transparency and accountability. I m thrilled to see the tangible results of our efforts. It's a new day at SEIU Nevada, one in which each voice is heard and every member is valued and respected, said Mancini. Given SEIU Nevada's unity, we are poised to make gains at the bargaining table and to address the diverse needs of our members at the 2017 Nevada Legislature.
