2 Policy Context The Innovation Union, 2010: Standards play an important role for innovation The Standardization Regulation, 1025/2012: Standards can help to bridge the gap between research and marketable products or services Commissioner Quinn at Innovation Summit 10/2012 [...] key framework conditions that influence our innovation performance. The first is standardisation. This can seem a dry, technical issue, but it is of immense strategic importance. 10 Dynamic Standardization: = standardisation is an important enabler of innovation. Standards: set the state of the art and give innovators a level playing field; provide customers with trust in the safety and performance of new products allow differentiation of products through reference to standardised methods accompany the emergence of new markets and the introduction of complex systems, contribute to diffusing knowledge and facilitating the application of technology CEN-CENELEC

12 Example: SPIDIA SPIDIA works on the missing standardisation and improvement of pre-analytical procedures for in vitro diagnostics SPIDIA is organised around 3 activities. The 1st activity leads to pan-european quality assurance schemes and guidelines for the pre-analytical phase of in vitro diagnostics CEN-CENELEC

13 Example: SPIDIA (2) In June 2010 CEN/TC 140 In vitro diagnostic medical devices decided to create a subgroup of experts to produce documents in the framework of the SPIDIA project CEN-CENELEC

14 Example: EASYBAT Objective : define new concepts for the smart insertion of battery packs and develop in particular generic interfaces for fully electric vehicles. This research aims at enabling smooth batteries integration and swap The EASYBAT consortium will propose a Business Plan for a CENELEC Workshop Agreement on new battery pack generic interfaces CEN-CENELEC

15 Example- EASYBAT Standardization activities will be conducted in order to promote the generic models and interfaces developed in the project. CEN-CENELEC
