1 PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SCOPE OF WORK SECTION FIBER OPTIC DATA NETWORK A. Furnish, install, terminate, and test all fiber optic equipment and cabling necessary for a complete and functional data highway network, as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. B. The fiber optic data highway network includes, but is not limited to, the following: 1. Provide (2) 24 strand fiber patch panels. 2. Provide a total of (12) strand of fiber optic cabling from the existing building to the IT Room. 3. Provide a total of (6) strands from the IT room to the Fire Alarm Control Panel. 4. Provide a total of (24) 10-0 fiber optic patch cables. 5. Provide all terminations required RELATED WORK A. Raceway Systems are included in Section B. Fire Alarm System is included in Section SUBMITTALS A. Submit, in accordance with Section , the following: 1. Shop Drawings a. Shop drawing requirements for the Fire Alarm System Data Highway Network are specified in this Section. 2. Product Data a. Product data shall be provided for the data highway cables, terminations and splices. Product data sheets shall include the manufacturer's name and catalog number for each item, the manufacturer's descriptive literature and catalog cuts and power supply requirements. 3. Samples a. Four samples of each type of cable, splice, and termination kit shall be submitted. Four samples of a completed example of each type of splice and termination shall be submitted. 4. Manufacturer's Instructions. Issued for Construction
2 B. Submit the following administrative requirements: 1. Test reports. 2. O&M manuals REFERENCE STANDARDS A. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1. NFPA-70 - National Electrical Code B. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 1. UL 1581 VW-1 - Vertical Tray Cable Flame Test 2. UL UL Standard for Safety Test for Flame-Propagation Height of Electrical and Optical-Fiber Cables Installed Vertical in Shafts. 3. UL UL Standard for Safety Test for Flame-Propagation and Smoke-Density Values for Electrical and Optical-Fiber Cables Used in Spaces Transporting Environmental Air. C. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) D. National Electrical Code (NEC) E. National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) F. Where reference is made to one of the above standards, the revision in effect at the time of bid opening shall apply QUALITY ASSURANCE A. The fiber optic cabling system materials furnished under this Section shall be provided by Fiber Optic suppliers who have been providing these types of materials for the past 3 years. The Fiber Optic suppliers shall provide personnel capable of providing technical assistance during installation. B. The installation of fiber optic cabling system materials furnished under this Section shall be performed by an installation contractor who has been installing these types of materials for the past 3 years DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. For all fiber optic cabling and patch cables, provide multi-mode, buffered, optical glass fiber cores compatible with LED based transmission systems. Maximum attenuation losses shall be 3.5 db/km or less at a wavelength of 850 nm and 1.5 db/km or less at a wavelength of 1300 nm. Minimum bandwidth shall be 160 MHz-km at 850 nm and 500 MHz-km at 1300 nm. Fiber core size shall be 62.5 micron unless otherwise directed by the system vendor. Plastic fiber core construction shall not be acceptable. B. Armor jacketed multi-fiber cable 1. Heavy duty, gel-filled, loose tube construction with dielectric central member, polyethylene inner jacket, steel tape armor and a medium density, oil, water and chemical resistant, UV stabilized polyethylene outer jacket, suitable for duct installation. Fiber cladding shall be 125 micron and fiber coating shall be 250 micron. 2. Cable Specifications a. Fiber Count: As indicated. b. Installation Load: 600 lbs (minimum) c. Long Term Application Load: 130 lbs (minimum) d. Minimum Crush Resistance: 200 lbs/in e. Operating Temperature: minus 40 to plus 70 degrees, C f. Outside diameter: 0.50 (maximum) C. Fiber Optic Non-Breakout Cable 1. Heavy duty, tight buffer construction with additional strength members and a oil, water and chemical resistant, UV stabilized, flame retardant, PVC outer jacket, UL listed OFNR. Fiber cladding shall be 125 micron and fiber buffer shall be 900 micron. 2. Cable Specifications a. Fiber Count: as indicated. b. Installation Load: 100 lbs (minimum) c. Long Term Application Load: 14 lbs (minimum) d. Minimum Crush Resistance: 80 lbs/sq in e. Operating Temperature: minus 10 to plus 50 degrees C Issued for Construction
4 D. Fiber Optic Interconnect Cable 1. Commercial duty, tight buffer construction with Kevlar strength member, polyurethane outer jacket. 2. Cable Specifications a. Fiber Count: Single or duplex type as required. b. National Electric Code OFNR designation. c. Crush Resistance: 128 lbs/sq in d. Operating Temperature: minus 20 to plus 70 degrees C 2.03 TERMINAL CONNECTORS A. Manufacturers 1. 3M Telecom Systems Group, Austin, TX 2. AMP, Inc., Harrisburg, PA 3. AT&T Network Systems, Norcross, GA 4. A.P.D., Inc., Brooklyn, CT 5. Or equal. B. Connectors: Type ST2 compatible design with ceramic ferrule and strain relief boot. The epoxy used to attach connectors to the individual fibers shall be a heat cure type featuring an accelerated cure cycle and color change upon cure completion. Connector specifications shall be as follows: 1. Insertion loss (typical): 0.5 db 2. Durability (mating cycles): 1000 (minimum) 3. Repeatability: Less than 0.2 db 4. Operating Temperature: minus 40 to plus 80 degrees C 2.04 PATCH PANELS A. Manufacturers 1. Siecor Corp., Hickory, NC 2. 3M Telecom Systems Group, Austin, TX 3. AT&T Network Systems, Norcross, GA 4. Or equal. Issued for Construction
5 B. Patch Panels: Suitable for wall mounting, comprised of internal mounting plate, slack cable take up/organizer blocks, patch block with connectors and ground lugs as indicated. Panels shall be NEMA 12 construction unless otherwise indicated on the Drawings. Patch panels shall be suitable for multimode system operation at 800 and 1300 nanometers SPLICE CLOSURES A. Manufacturers 1. Siecor Corp., Hickory, NC 2. 3M Telecom Systems Group, Austin, TX 3. AT&T Network Systems, Norcross, GA 4. Or equal. B. Splice Closures: Constructed of thermoplastic, suitable for "butt" or "through" cable entry, moisture tight sealing arrangement, removable splice tray organizer, splice trays for mechanical splices, suitable for multimode system operation at 800 and 1300 nanometers, grounding lugs or equivalent for grounding cable armor. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 GENERAL A. Provide all material, equipment and labor to install the fiber optic cables as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. B. Installation shall be in accordance with the NEC. C. Provide delivery, storage, and handling of materials and equipment in accordance with Division INSTALLATION A. Install cables in the raceway systems as indicated. Inspect raceways prior to pulling in cables. Notify the Engineer of any conditions which would prevent installation of the specified cables, before proceeding with the installation. B. Install armor jacketed multi-fiber cables in underground ducts. Rod and swab out ducts prior to installing cables. C. Install non-breakout cables in conduit systems inside buildings and structures. D. Lubricate cables with lubricants specially formulated for fiber cabling jackets during installation. Do not exceed cable manufacturer's specifications for tensile strength and bending radius. Pulleys used to aid in the installation of the fiber optic cable must be sized according to the minimum bending radius. The pulling tension of all fiber cables during installation shall be recorded using a strip recorder. The printout of the strip recorder shall be submitted to the Engineer. Issued for Construction

Provide breakout kits, splice closures, signal transceivers, power supplies, patch panels, pigtails and jumpers as required and as indicated to install a complete data highway communications network. Patch panels and splice enclosures shall be wall mounted. F. Splices: Splices shall be made in designated enclosures above ground only. Provide adequate put-up lengths on cable reels to make termination-to-termination runs without splices. Where splices are indicated provide mechanical splices with attenuation losses of 0.3 db or less. Make splices watertight and provide mechanical protection equal to the cable jacket, or better. G. Support cables in riser conduits at intervals as required by the NEC. H. Installation tools and materials shall be approved by the cable manufacturer. I. The polishing process of terminal connectors shall be a two stage wet process using 3.0 micron lapping film for an initial polish followed by 0.3 micron lapping film for the final polish IDENTIFICATION A. Label each termination point. B. Tag each cable in junction boxes, manholes and handholes. Provide permanent nylon/plastic tie-wrap type tags with waterproof markings PHYSICAL CHECKOUT A. General Procedures 1. Conduct physical checkout of the fiber optic data highway network. 2. Physical checkout shall be performed prior to functional testing. B. Check Procedures 1. Verify that fiber optic cable reels have been off-loaded from truck carefully and not damaged. 2. Verify that the optical fibers of the cable assembly are the type and quantity as specified or as recommended by the Fire Alarm System Supplier. 3. Verify that cable construction is the type specified. 4. Verify that fiber optic patch panels have been installed plumb and level at locations indicated. 5. Verify that fiber optic splice closures have been installed at locations indicated. 6. Verify that optical fiber connections or terminations within patch panels and splice closures are in accordance with cable manufacturer's recommendations. Issued for Construction
7 3.05 FIELD AND FUNCTIONAL TESTING A. Make the following field tests after cable installation: 1. Visually, inspect terminal connectors for out-of-round condition and surface defects such as micro-chips and cracks using a 100X (minimum) inspection microscope. 2. Check optical continuity of each fiber from terminal to terminal. 3. Verify the calculated attenuation power losses of each fiber from the transmit and receive terminals at the source of each data communications loop. The light source and operating wavelength of the test equipment shall be representative of the actual operating equipment. END OF SECTION Issued for Construction
