5 CCTV pre PoFA National CCTV Strategy Board shaping the National CCTV Strategy, formed the foundations of the Surveillance Camera Commissioner's code of practice Attempt to ensure high quality fit for purpose evidence from CCTV was effectively used to ensure the safety of the public and to secure prosecutions Previous research, however suggested that CCTV cameras were mainly deployed by private owners. 5
6 CCTV pre PoFA BSIA research project into the number of UK CCTV cameras and their ownership and use, achieving a raised public profile for all BSIA members Research revealed that only 1 in 70 cameras are owned and operated by the Government SCC Code of practice served to recommend the best practice and statutory requirements which had to be met BSIA ensured that its Form 109 Planning, design, installation and operation of CCTV surveillance systems Code of practice and associated guidance containing the guiding principles of the SCC 6
7 High standards CCTV in the UK is almost entirely owned by private operators Importance of selecing providers who show commitment to high standards e.g. BSIA membership criteria BS 7858 Security screening of individuals employed in a security environment CCTV system member Installer / maintainer BSIA Form No. 109 Planning, design, installation and operation of CCTV surveillance systems Code of practice and associated guidance 7
8 High standards BS EN CCTV surveillance systems for use in security applications ii) Digital CCTV Recording Systems should be specified, selected, installed and operated in accordance with the latest version of the following: BS 8495 Code of Practice for digital CCTV recording systems for the purpose of image export to be used as evidence 8
9 High standards Without self-regulation, CCTV quality is not consistent Public prosecutions are reliant on the (majority) of private CCTV cameras Without attention being directed at quality and fitness for purpose, the benefits of CCTV will not be fully leveraged BSIA members are devoted to ensuring the highest possible standards are met. 9
