1 Fire Safety & Evacuation Procedures These fire procedures have where possible been prepared in accordance with Australian Standard Emergency Control Organisation and Procedures for Buildings, Structures and Workplaces.

2 Emergency Committee The Emergency Committee (EC) shall be formed from Department representatives and will also include representatives from the Wardens, engineering, HR, GM and others with specific skills or expertise. The EC shall meet bi annually to discuss emergency planning and relevant issues within the property. Duties Establish, implement and maintain emergency plans and emergency procedures Determine the number of Emergency Trained Personnel (ETP) required for the property Ensure that personnel are appointed to all positions on the ETP particularly the Warden Training of ETP personnel Arrange evacuation exercises Review the outcomes of the exercises and implement improvements Determine responsibilities for implementing the procedures Emergency Trained Personnel The TP shall be made up of all Head Wardens, Area Wardens, Wardens, Department Heads, and the GM. Once an Emergency has been declared the powers of the Head Warden, Wardens and Area Wardens will override all normal non emergency management authorities. Wardens shall have the authority to direct all staff and visitors in their area to ensure life safety. Life safety will take precedent over assets at all times. Indemnity Both the EC and ETP personnel shall be indemnified by Hotel Futura against civil liability from workplace emergency response assessment, education, training sessions, periodic exercises or emergency evacuation of the building where the personnel act in good faith and in the course of their emergency control duties.

3 Introduction All staff of Hotel Futura will have to pass the Fire Safety & Evacuation quiz on the induction CD. Department Heads have to sign off the pass rate and gets a counter signature from the staff member to indicate that they understand their duties and responsibilities. The printed manual must be displayed for all to read and any queries are to be dealt with as soon as possible by consulting the relevant manager and Risk Assessment Team. 4 Fire Protection Staff members have THREE (3) main roles to play in the management of Fire Safety in the Hotel: PREVENTION, CONTROL and EVACUATION. PREVENTION is the best cure. Staff must follow all safety instructions and training to reduce the chance of starting a fire. However Accidents can happen. In the event of a fire, staff must assist guests and visitors to safely EVACUATE from the Hotel and CONTROL small fires before the need to evacuate becomes necessary. Fire Prevention In order to prevent a fire it is important to know the following: Basic Chemistry of Fire Common Causes of Fire Different Types of Fire Basic Chemistry of Fire To start a fire you need: Air (oxygen) Fuel (a flammable material) Heat (temperature) All three combine to produce fire. Classification of Fire Fire is classified under these categories: Class A Solid Fire B Liquid Fire C Gas Fire D Metal Fire E Electrical Fire Characteristics Involves materials such as wood, paper, cotton, straw etc. Involves material such as petroleum, gasoline, oil, grease, fats, spirits, rubber etc. Involves gasses, vapour such as LPG natural gas Involving burning metals e.g. Magnesium Involves electrically operated instruments and appliances

5 Method of Extinguishing Fires There are three (3) main methods for extinguishing a fire: Smothering Oxygen must be excluded (cut off the air supply), this is achieved by using sand, earth, foam, CO 2 and dry chemical powder. Cooling The temperature of the burning substances must be reduced below the ignition temperature by the application of cooling agents such as water. Starving By removing the fuel (flammable material) on fire. Which extinction method for each fire type? Class A Solid Fire B Liquid Fire C Gas Fire D Metal Fire E Electrical Fire Extinction Method Use any type of extinguisher (smothering & cooling) preferably WATER Use DRY CHEMICAL (smothering) / FOAM (smothering & cooling) / CO 2 (smothering)/ SPECIAL PURPOSE (cooking fats and oils) Turn gas off at its source first. DRY CHEMICAL or CO 2 SPECIAL PURPOSE. Never WATER DRY CHEMICAL / CO 2 only. Never WATER

6 Fire Fighting Equipment Guide It is extremely important that if you attempt to fight a fire you do so using the correct Fire Fighting Equipment. You need to know what colour Extinguisher you can use safely on a particular fire. If you are not sure read the instructions on the Extinguisher before using it. Using the wrong Extinguisher could result in a more serious situation developing. This guide will assist you in selecting the correct Fire Fighting Equipment for the different types of fires. 7 Fire Safety Equipment in this Hotel The early detection of a fire and a correct and prompt response can help to extinguish fires quickly or prevent it spreading. This Hotel is fitted with the following Fire Safety Equipment to assist with the early detection and control of a Fire situation. 8 Fire Fighting Equipment Locations Fire Cabinets contain: 25mm fire hose with shut off valve Dry Powder Extinguisher Phone direct to main Fire Panel Kitchen Areas Fire Blankets Special Purpose Extinguishers Fire Detection Equipment This property has hard wired detectors that will raise the alarm at the main fire panel in the event of a fire and stand alone detectors within the accommodation areas that will only raise a localised (in the room) alarm if activated. Assembly Area The initial assembly area in the event of a fire will be the Park across the road.
