7 6.1 INTRODUCTION The NMC Climate Sensors available can be used on the following controller models: NMC Junior, NMC 64 Climate, NMC Pro and NMC DC. Not all of the sensors can be connected to all of the controller models. These connections are explained in Section 2 Installation - Hardware of the CMT Manual. Further, refer to 1.4 CMT Specifications and Limitations for the quantity of various sensors that can be configured to each controller. NMC Climate Sensors available include: Inside and/or Outside Temperature Inside and/or Outside Humidity Rain Sensor ON/OFF to indicate rain status Rain Collector to measure rain quantity Wind Speed and Direction Radiation sensor (DAVIS) to measure radiation level Radiation sensor (NETAFIM) to measure radiation level and sum. CO2 sensor The temperature and humidity sensors can be installed in a climate box or in shield covers. The climate box will be installed inside a greenhouse to measure climate compartment conditions and include a fan to circulate greenhouse air over the sensors.. The shield cover will be used with the weather station to measure outside climatic conditions. All weather station sensors can be mounted on a mounting arm bracket. This bracket will ensure the correct installation of sensors and simplify the installation. Version 2.01 JA NMC Sensors Page 6

11 HUMIDITY SENSOR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE Open the humidity sensor by unscrewing the sensor filter cover and remove the filter before cleaning. Clean the filter every 6 months or as required. Use water only. Avoid touching the sensor during the cleaning process. NB Warning. Water may damage the sensor. Make sure that the sensor is sealed whilst washing or in contact with water. FIGURE 5. The sensor tip will require replacement eventually, to insure correct humidity readings. When replacing the sensor tip, make sure that you fit it in the right direction. The sensor tip will fit into the socket in one direction only (see Figure 6). Version 2.01 JA NMC Sensors Page 10

12 6.2.3 INSIDE TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY BOX INSTALLATION The NMC Inside Temperature and Humidity Box is supplied with a galvanized mounting chain and hook for installation. All spare parts (sensors, fan and bridge rectifier) are sold separate, so it will not be necessary to replace a complete box under normal operating conditions. Consider the following during installation: Maximum preferred cable length (0.8mm) from Box to NMC controller is 100m Install one box per 2500 m² of greenhouse area Install the galvanized hook at the box, to enable height adjustment of the box as the crop height changes Minimum distance from greenhouse structure 0.5m In lightning prone areas, do not fasten the mounting chain to the greenhouse structure, use a length of rope and install only enough chain for box height adjustment. This will isolate the box from the greenhouse structure and prevent lightning damage to the NMC Controller Version 2.01 JA NMC Sensors Page 11

WIND SENSOR COMPONENTS Install the weather station sensors onto the weather station mounting arm. Install the weather station onto the supplied pole. Wire the sensors into the controller making sure that there is enough slack on the cable to mount the pole in its place later. Before mounting the pole, check the wind direction value. 16 Using your fingers, turn the stainless steel wind direction shaft until the value on the NMC controller is 0. Allow 5 seconds for the value to stabilize before checking it. (Figure 11) FIGURE 11. ZERO THE WIND DIRECTION SHAFT Replace the wind vane with the bullet-shaped nose pointing in the same direction as the Wind speed and direction arm. (Figure 12) FIGURE 12. WIND SENSOR NOSE AND ARM IN SAME DIRECTION Push the wind vane onto the stainless steel shaft. Take care not to disturb the position of the shaft when doing this. (Figure 13) FIGURE 13. 17 Fasten the grub screw to hold the wind vane in place. (Figure 14) FIGURE 14. FIX THE WIND VANE TO THE SHAFT Your Wind Direction pointer is now oriented to 0. Install the pole onto its brackets but do not tighten the u-bolts yet. Using a compass, turn the pole until the Wind Speed and Direction arm is pointing north. (Figure 15) North FIGURE 15. See 6.8 Weather Sensor Mounting Arm Installation WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION SENSOR MAINTENANCE The NMC Wind Speed and Direction sensor does not require regular maintenance, nevertheless in highly polluted conditions it is recommended to clean the sensor surfaces with clean water from time to time. RAIN DETECTOR SENSOR MOUNTING RAIN DETECTOR SENSOR INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE The installation of the rain detector, its connection to a controller and its power supply is explained by the wiring detailed in Section Connection Wiring Rain Sensor (On/off) of the CMT Manual. Power must be disconnected prior to opening the enclosure to avoid electrical shock. The Rain Detector does not require regular maintenance, nevertheless in highly polluted conditions it is recommended to clean the sensor surface with clean water from time to time. 20 6.5.2 RAIN COLLECTOR SENSOR The NMC Rain Collector measures rainfall quantities. When using a Rain Collector it is not necessary to use a Rain Detector. The NMC controller will be put in a rain status by its software as soon as rainfall is being measured. The rain sensor consists of a measuring spoon that flips every time it accumulates a specific quantity. Every flip is counted and transformed to quantities FIGURE 17. 26 6.7 CO 2 SENSOR The CO2 measurement is based on non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) technology. The auto-calibration procedure compensates for aging of the infrared source and guarantees high reliability, long term stability and eliminates the need of periodical calibration in the field. 27 6.8 WEATHER SENSOR MOUNTING ARM INSTALLATION The NMC Weather Sensor Mounting Arm is made from aluminium and supplied with all the screws and clamps required to install the weather station sensors. Consider the following during installation: Maximum cable length (0.8mm OD) from weather station to NMC controller is 100m Minimum height above the highest structure (greenhouse, pump room or farm office) surrounding the weather station installation is 1m Install weather station with wind speed and direction sensor black support arm pointing north Install rain sensor (ON/OFF) facing the prevailing rain direction Level weather station for accurate sensor readings In lightning prone areas earth the weather station installation with at least a 10mm² earth cable, connect earth of weather station to earth of NMC controller and protect with a lightning rod.
