6 Kern County Student Career Training Taft Oil Technology Academy creates energy professionals for the future By Mark Crawford, Contributing Writer Reprinted with permission from Well Servicing magazine, September/ October One of the biggest challenges for the oil and gas industry is finding qualified workers who have the technical skills to get the job done. The best way for high-producing areas to do this is to grow their own. Over a decade ago the Taft Union High School District did just that in partnership with the California Department of Education and several oil and gas companies, the district established the Taft Oil-Technology Academy in 2001 to prepare students for possible careers in the oil industry. All students volunteer to enter the program and must go through an extensive application, screening, and interview process during their ninth-grade year to be accepted. The sequential program begins in the sophomore year and teaches rigorous classes related to oil and gas for the next three years. Over 300 students have graduated from the academy since the first class graduated in Sixty-six percent of all graduates have gone on to college/technical schools, 13 percent entered the petroleum industry Sixty-six percent of all graduates have gone on to college/technical schools, 13 percent entered the petroleum industry after high school, 6 percent entered the military, and 15 percent found employment in nonpetroleum industry occupations. after high school, 6 percent entered the military, and 15 percent found employment in non-petroleum industry occupations. Most recently, 29 graduating seniors from the academy received $103,200 in scholarships. Our funding is through matching funds from the Taft Union High School District, the California Department of Education, and our business partners, says Lynn Pendergrass, coordinator of the Taft Oil Technology Academy. Much of the partners funding is in-kind, such as the time they spend at steering committee meetings, speaking as guests, and organizing field trips. Although state funding has dropped in recent years, the commitment by our high school administration and business partners remains high. 7 Fred Holmes, president of Holmes Western Oil Corporation presents a pump unit donation to Hadley Pittman, president of the Taft Oil- Technology Academy Student Section of AADE. Fred Holmes, president of Holmes Western Oil Corp in Taft, has been involved with the program from the very beginning. Our business partners are almost too helpful, he says. Anything we ask for, they provide. They are incredibly dedicated, generous partners and provide many of the speakers, field trips & summer internships we need. A balanced education The Taft Oil-Technology Academy was the first high-school level, college-preparatory, school-to-career partnership academy in the nation with a career focus on the petroleum industry. The academy has been Students on a field trip to Halliburton s Fluids Lab in Bakersfield. visited by school districts from several states and has served as a model for those state programs. Sophomore classes include computer applications, careers, geology, exploration, drilling, engineering, and alternative energy. During these units, guest speakers from the industry discuss their expertise in these topics. Students must complete reports, create and conduct PowerPoint presentations, and write follow-up reports and thank-you notes after the field trips. The following year, as juniors, they study production, transportation, and engineering and work in teams to present a formal debate on a controversial topic, such as hydraulic fracturing. Cal State Long Beach Student Committee Contact Advisor Walter Martinez (562) wmartinz@csulb.edu Section website: Cal Poly Pomona Student Section Contact Advisor Salomon Oldak, Advisor, soldak@csupomona.edu Website: Kern County Student Career Training, Continued from page 7 For our debate on fracturing we started by watching Gasland and writing a paper against hydraulic fracturing, says Pendergrass. We then taught them the technology with a field trip to Halliburton s Bakersfield office, followed by writing a pro-fracking paper. After the movie, most of the students were against fracking, but by the time we ended at Halliburton they were all for it. They learned how to separate fact from the sensationalism and emotion that has driven the issue and not one group wanted to take the anti-fracking side during the debate. Courses in the senior year cover refining and environmental issues. Job shadowing days are ride-along experiences with business partner personnel in career areas the students have focused on during their three years in the academy. Students also complete a senior project that consists of a written report, physical project, and presentation to a board. Seniors also become PASSPORT certified (industry safety, first aid, and CPR) during the year. Our goal is to educate students on all aspects of the petroleum industry upstream, midstream and downstream and all the career opportunities that are available, says Pendergrass. We turn out students who are prepared for the next stage of life with focus and determination. They have the ability to make a career decision and know where to go to get the training they need, whether that s directly into the workforce, a two-year college for a technical degree, or a fouryear university. Blake Emberson attended Taft Oil-Technology Academy from 2007 to 2010 and is now a junior at the Colorado School of Mines. I greatly benefited from the many people I got to know and work with at the academy, he says. My education there helped me get into Colorado School of Mines and has also enabled me to get summer internships over the last three summers. 9 Thoughts on engineering Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable, like a walking encyclopedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organized forcing of technological change... Engineers operate at the interface between science and society... Gordon Brown ( ),, Dean of Engineering, MIT. The engineer is the key figure in the material progress of the world. It is his engineering that makes a reality of the potential value of science by translating scientific knowledge into tools, resources, energy and labor to bring them into the service of man... To make contributions of this kind the engineer requires the imagination to visualize the needs of society and to appreciate what is possible as well as the technological and broad social age understanding to bring his vision to reality. Sir Eric Ashby ( ), British Educator. Regional events & training Dates subject to change. Contact the sponsoring party before making your final plans to attend. Kern County Student Career Training, Continued from page 8 Moving forward Taft Oil-Technology Academy recently established a student section of the American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE), with Fred Holmes serving as student section coordinator. Although there are many AADE student sections at universities, Taft s chapter is the first in the nation at the high-school level. We want to introduce students to professional associations, so we have quarterly dinner meetings, says Pendergrass. All Oil Tech students and our business partners are invited. Fred barbecues, we have a meeting, a guest speaker, and a raffle. Students are required to sit with business partners and guests to converse. We don t allow a table full of students it s fun to see the interaction between the students and adults. A grant from the Alliance of Women in Energy and the Kern Economic Development Corporation has enabled the academy to launch a comprehensive mentoring program. Mentors from the industry meet once a month with small groups of students to discuss goal setting, study habits, time management, careers, colleges, job applications, resumes, cover letters, interview skills, and finances during and after college. When I put out a call for mentors, I thought I would be lucky to get 20 or so, but our industry responded with 35 individuals wanting to work with our students, says Pendergrass. It is that kind of support for what we are doing that makes this program so special. Holmes is one of those mentors. It doesn t matter if they go into the oil business or not, says Holmes. We just want them to develop the business skills they ll need to be motivated and successful in any career that they choose.
