9 Advanced Manufacturing Defined Halton s manufacturing sector is engaged in a range of advanced technologies and processes, from automated processes in the automotive sector to leading edge technologies in the aerospace sector. Given that this economic activity can overlap many manufacturing subsectors, there is no set definition for Advanced Manufacturing companies. 15 Spotlight: Goodrich Landing Gear Since moving to Oakville in 1984, Goodrich has continued to expand its plant and increase its workforce. Goodrich s almost 400,000 square feet Oakville plant employs 825 people and designs, tests and manufactures highly complex landing gear systems for the world s largest commercial aircraft companies including Boeing, Airbus and Bombardier. The plant is also home to the world s largest landing gear test lab. As one of Oakville s largest employers, Goodrich s access to a highly skilled workforce and the area s comprehensive transportation network have contributed directly to the growth of the business over the past 27 years. In 2012, The Province of Ontario announced it will invest $3.3 million in Goodrich over the next five years. The Province s investment will support a more than $90 million investment Goodrich is making over the next five years into research and development. 15
