3 SYSTEM STATUS BATTERY POWER REPLACE BATTERY ALARM SILENCE ALARM SILENCE BATTERY EMERGENCY USE A FEW EASY STEPS TO CONNECT YOUR NBN CO APPOINTMENT Whether you re getting a fibre to the home or fixed wireless installation, you re just a few easy steps away from getting connected to the NBN. A Telstra Specialist will process your order and confirm your NBN Co and Telstra installation appointments as required. Once they re completed, you should be ready to connect to the NBN. 1 YOUR NBN CO APPOINTMENT NBN Co is the Australian Government Enterprise that runs the NBN. NBN Co will send out an NBN Co Installer to install the NBN Co equipment required to connect your home to the NBN. 2 YOUR TELSTRA CONNECTION Depending on your preference, one of the following will apply to you. A Telstra Technician will be sent out to install and connect your Telstra equipment and devices to the NBN. OR A Self Installation Kit will be dispatched so you can install and connect your Telstra equipment and devices to the NBN yourself (only available if you have a fibre broadband connection). An Authorised Representative on your Telstra account needs to be present at each appointment to: let the NBN Co Installer/Telstra Technician into your home authorise the final location of equipment approve any additional charges if applicable. You can add Authorised Representatives to your account by calling 1800 TFIBRE ( ). If you rent your home, you ll need consent from your landlord to install the NBN equipment before your NBN Co appointment. You may also require consent from the Body Corporate or Owner s Corporation if you live in a multi-dwelling building. Please note older telephones (eg dial/rotary phones), fax machines, back to base alarms, medical alert systems and emergency call systems may not work on the NBN. If you have such equipment, please contact your provider or the manufacturer to see if it s compatible. FIBRE SERVICES ON THE NBN If you re using a fibre to the home connection to access the NBN, please follow the guidelines in this section. A Telstra Specialist will book an installation appointment with NBN Co, who will send out a technician to install the NBN Co equipment at your home. This appointment can take up to five hours. As part of a standard installation, NBN Co will install up to 60 metres of fibre cabling from the boundary of your property to the NBN Utility Box. NBN Utility Box Outside your premises Power Supply Unit (206mm x 180mm) Inside your premises Up to 40 metres of cabling will also be installed from the NBN Utility Box to the NBN Connection Box, which will sit inside your home. There are a number of factors that can result in the need for a non-standard installation, such as obstacles, dangers or safety concerns during installation. If this applies to your installation, the NBN Co Technician will quote on the additional costs, which will be charged to your Telstra Bill if you decide to go ahead. NBN Connection Box* (233mm x 195mm) * Please note the NBN Connection Box shown is designed for use inside the home. If your installation requires an external NBN Connection Box your device will differ to that shown above. NBN Co Limited
4 FIXED WIRELESS SERVICES ON THE NBN PREPARING FOR YOUR NBN CO INSTALLATION If you re using a fixed wireless connection to access the NBN, please follow the guidelines in this section. Fixed wireless services are delivered via a signal transmitted through the air, rather than via fibre optic cable. A Telstra Specialist will book an appointment with NBN Co, who will send out an NBN Co Installer to install the NBN Co equipment at your home. This appointment can take up to four hours. Before your installation can begin, the NBN Co Installer will carry out a signal strength survey to check the quality of the fixed wireless service available, and decide where the Outdoor Antenna needs to be placed to receive a good signal. There needs to be a clear line of sight between the fixed wireless base station sending your NBN signal and the Outdoor Antenna to achieve a good signal. If the survey is successful and you re happy with the suggested location of the Outdoor Antenna, the NBN Co Installer will install your equipment. If the survey is unsuccessful or you re unhappy with the required location of the Outdoor Antenna, your installation will not go ahead and we ll contact you to discuss your options. There are a number of factors that can result in the need for a non-standard installation, such as obstacles, dangers or safety concerns during installation. If this applies to your installation, the NBN Co Installer will quote on the additional costs, which will be charged to your Telstra Bill if you decide to go ahead. No matter how you re connecting to the NBN, it s important to think about where you d like the NBN equipment installed prior to your NBN Co appointment. It s important you have the NBN Co equipment in a location that meets your requirements. Some things to consider are: the NBN equipment should be positioned close to your main computer and T-Gateway the equipment should be inside your home, not in a separate building such as a shed or garage areas prone to extreme temperatures, dirt or dust are not suitable the equipment needs ventilation space around it Phone the NBN Connection Box needs to be within 1.5 metres of a 240V power point and close to a phone point. If you re getting a fixed wireless broadband connection, it s likely the Outdoor Antenna will need to be installed using a mounting attached to the eaves of your roof or on the roof itself. Small holes may need to be drilled in your walls to allow the cable used to connect the Outdoor Antenna to the NBN Connection Box to pass from outside to inside your home. 5 YOUR TELSTRA CONNECTION A Telstra Specialist will confirm your Telstra installation appointment or send your Self Installation Kit to your home. TELSTRA APPOINTMENT SELF INSTALLATION KIT T-GATEWAY PLACEMENT A Telstra Technician will visit your home, install your T-Gateway (used to connect your telephone and internet devices to the NBN), and connect it to the NBN Connection Box. The technician will also help you connect your Telstra services to the NBN and test that they re working properly, and if applicable, assist you with connecting additional internet enabled devices. In most cases the installation will be standard as long as the T-Gateway is located in the same room as the NBN Connection Box. If a non-standard installation is required, your technician will discuss your options and outline any extra costs involved. T-Gateway with optional T-Hub 2 Handset A Self Installation Kit will be sent to your home that you can use to install your T-Gateway and connect your devices to the NBN. This option is only available if you have a fibre connection on the NBN. Your Self Installation Kit will include: T-Gateway 2 x ethernet cables 2 x telephone cables Quick Guide Using your Telstra Services on the NBN Guide Wireless Security Card. It s important to consider the following points before completing a self installation. Are you confident you can install your equipment correctly? If you re unsure you ll be able to install your equipment correctly it might be best to have your Telstra Specialist arrange a Telstra appointment so a Telstra Technician can do it for you. For a self installation to be effective, you need to ensure the NBN Co equipment is installed in an area of your house that you want to locate your computer or Wi-Fi signal. In some cases, a garage is not suitable if it means a poor Wi-Fi signal through your house. Please consider this carefully before NBN Co arrive to install the equipment. Your home phone solution. In most cases, you will be provided with a Telstra Voice Advanced service which means your home phone will be controlled by your T-Gateway and as such, your previous home phone wiring will no longer work. This means you ll have to use cordless phones if you want to connect more than one home phone. There are a few important things to consider before your T-Gateway is installed: T-Gateway needs to be located close to the NBN Connection Box (the Ethernet cable that connects them is only 1.8 meters long) and a power point T-Gateway requires ventilation space around it, and needs to be easily accessible so you can check the indicator lights if there s a problem areas prone to extreme temperatures, dirt or dust are not suitable for T-Gateway you ll need the details on your Wireless Security Card handy for any devices you d like to connect to your network if you d like to re-use an existing Wi-Fi network name (SSID), you ll need the details and password so you or your Telstra Technician can set it up. 06
6 CHECK IF YOU RE READY HELP IS AT HAND We can t wait to get you connected to the NBN, and want your installation to run as smoothly as possible. When you re planning your appointment, use the checklist below to make sure you re ready to go. CHECKLIST FOR CONNECTION I ve arranged for an Authorised Representative to be present at my appointment. I ve obtained consent from my landlord/body corporate/ owner s corporation to install the equipment at my premises (if required). I ve contacted my back-to-base alarm system or personal response system (medical alert/emergency call) provider to check if my system is NBN compatible (if required). I ve considered where I d like my NBN Co equipment and T-Gateway positioned in my home. I have the usernames and passwords for the devices I want connected during my Telstra installation appointment/want to connect myself using a Self Installation Kit.
