Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI) Public Safety Testing and Evaluation Services Inc., Report No H. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Design Requirements: 1. Provide a hydraulically designed installation of automatic sprinklers with 100 percent coverage of the building except areas indicated otherwise. 2. Sprinkler head arrangement shall symmetrically laid out on ceiling tile. Coordinate with partitions, columns, beams, lighting fixtures, ceiling grilles, and other architectural elements. Sprinkler heads shall be spaced, located, and positioned according to NFPA Use maximum allowable spacing of sprinkler heads for the hazard occupancy type designed. 4. Furnish guards on sprinkler heads located near heaters, boilers, in stair enclosures, and under air conditioning ducts or building obstructions below 8'-0" above finish floor. 5. Building system shall be hydraulically designed according to the latest issue of NFPA Calculations, drawings, referenced diagrams, performance curves, and data used to layout and identify system shall be signed and sealed by a Florida registered professional engineer. a. Submit signed and sealed information to the Board's insurance underwriter and local fire authorities for approvals and provide only approved submittals to the Board for substantial completion. 3 1.04 SUBMITTALS b. Design density shall be 0.15 gpm over 1500 square feet. A. Submit properly identified manufacturer's literature. B. Submit shop drawings for the following: 1. Valves and appurtenances. 2. Pipe hangers and supports. 3. Sprinkler heads. 4. Piping. 5. Flow switches and control devices. 6. Submit complete, 1/8" scale, drawings of fire sprinkler system layout. 7. Hydraulic calculations QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Regulatory Requirements: 1. Fire protection equipment and devices shall be UL listed for the service intended. 2. Install equipment according to standards of NFPA and FM requirements. 3. Electrical installation shall comply with NEC and local codes. B. Requirements for Thermoplastic Post-Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) Fire Sprinkler Pipe: 1. Installer shall have successfully completed the manufacturer's training classes before starting the Work. 2. Comply with applicable CPVC codes and standards, manufacturer's specifications and installation requirements, and as noted in this section. 3. Comply with the following manufacturer's specification: a. General Specification for Blaze Master CPVC fire sprinkler pipe and fittings. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS A. Thermoplastic Post-Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC) Fire Sprinkler System: 1. Comply with the following as published by B.F. Goodrich. a. "General Specification for BlazeMaster CPVC", latest edition. b. "BlazeMaster Fire Sprinkler Systems Friction Loss Table", latest edition. 2. CPVC fire sprinkler pipes and fittings shall be for use in light hazard occupancies as defined in NFPA CPVC fire sprinkler pipes and fittings shall bear the UL trademark logo. 4. Use CPVC sprinkler pipes and fittings in wet pipe systems only. 5. Exposed Pipe Runs Sprinkler Heads: Quick response heads. B. Black Iron or Steel Piping: 1. Pipe shall be new, designed for 175 psi working pressure, conforming to ASTM specifications, along with the applicable ASTM standard marked on each length of pipe. 2. Pipe shall be steel, Schedule 40, black, and according to ASTM A135 Grade A or ASTM A53 Grade A seamless. 3. For sizes above 2 inches only, pipe may be steel, Schedule 10, black, and according to ASTM A135 Grade A. 4. Black steel pipe for use with push-on fittings (Schedule 40 or 10) shall conform to ASTM A135 tolerances and fitting manufacturer's tolerances. 5. Coat black steel pipe with a suitable protective coating. Sprinkler piping exposed to the weather or used in a corrosive atmosphere, as noted on drawings, shall be galvanized. 6. ASTM A135 sprinkler pipe shall be tested, either with a nondestructive electric test for continuous and Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES
6 uninterrupted inspection of both the welded seam and complete circumference of the pipe or by the hydrostatic method. 7. ASTM A135 sprinkler pipe shall be tested to a critical weld, both cone and flatten test. 8. ASTM A135 sprinkler pipe shall be tested at the mill according to the applicable specification. C. Black Iron or Steel Pipe Fittings: 1. Threaded malleable iron or screwed banded cast iron. ANSI B16.4 and B Cast iron or steel flanged fittings, ANSI B16.5; Victaulic rigid or flexible couplings with Grade E gaskets as required. 3. Welded Fittings: ANSI B Schedule 40 Black Steel Pipe Joints: a. Screwed joints shall comply with ANSI B2.1. b. Welded joints shall comply with ANSI B31.10, ANSI B31.10a, and ANSI B31.10b. c. Mechanical grooved couplings or push-on couplings, Victaulic Pressfit system used on Schedule 5 pipe joined by a UL and FM approved combination of couplings, fittings, gaskets from the same manufacturer. Grooves may be rolled or cut and they shall be dimensionally compatible with the coupling. 5. Schedule 10 Black Steel ASTM A135 Sprinkler Pipe Joints: a. Welded joints shall comply with ANSI B31.10, ANSI B31.10a, and ANSI B31010b. b. Mechanical couplings shall be UL and FM approved. c. Couplings shall be of the rolled groove type or the mechanical locking type (push-on). d. Grooves for the rolled groove type shall be rolled and dimensionally compatible with the coupling. Cut grooving is not allowed. e. Pipe end preparation for the mechanical locking type couplings shall be according to manufacturer's recommendations. 6. Screwed Fittings: Cast iron, 175-pound class, black, and according to ANSI B16.4 or malleable iron, 150- pound class, black, and according to ANSI B Flanged Fittings: Cast iron, short body, Class 125, black, and according to ANSI B16.1. 7 a. Gaskets: Full face of 1/8" minimum thickness red sheet rubber. b. Flange Bolts: Hexagon head machine bolts with heavy semi-finished hexagon head nuts, cadmium plated, having dimensions according to ANSI B Weld Fittings: Steel, standard weights, black, and complying with ANSI B16.9, ANSI B16.25, ASTM A234, ANSI B16.5, and ANSI B Grooved Couplings and Mechanical Fittings: Ductile iron, 175 psi working pressure, rigid style 005 Victaulic or accepted equivalent, according to ASTM A47. Couplings gasket material shall be butyl rubber. Grooved couplings and mechanical fittings shall be tested and listed by UL or FM. D. Valves and Appurtenances: 1. Gate Valves: a. 2-1/2" and Larger: UL listed, FM approved flanged faced, outside screw and yoke, ferro-steel body, bonnet and bronze fitted, and 175 WWP Class. b. 2" and Smaller: UL listed, FM approved OS & Y threaded bronze, rising stem 175 WWP Class. 2. Check Valves: a. 2-1/2" and Larger: UL listed, FM approved, grooved end, 175 psi working pressure, Victaulic style 717 or 717R or accepted equivalent. b. 2" and Smaller: Threaded bronze, swing type, 175 WWP Class. c. Silent Type: Flanged cast iron or steel body, bronze trim, double center guided spring, 175 psi WOG. 1) 2" and Smaller: Threaded end. 2) 2-1/2" and Larger: Flanged end. 3. Globe Valves: Bronze body and disc, screwed bonnet, 200 psi WOG, threaded ends. 4. Provide sprinkler branch lines OS&Y and control valves with tamper indicators monitored at the Central Control Station. 5. Audible electrically operated sprinkler alarms specified under Division 16. 8 6. Escutcheons: Chromium plated steel or chromium plated brass, either one piece or split patterns. E. Hangers and Supports: 1. Provide adjustable hangers as required for proper support of pipe lines according to requirements of NFPA 13, Fed.Spec.WW-H-171E, and is UL listed. Hangers shall allow for expansion and contraction of pipe lines and be wrought iron clevis type. Wire type hangers are not allowed. 2. Piping Supported from Concrete Slabs: Use hangers attached to galvanized rods suspended from concrete inserts. Powder actuated fasteners and devices are not allowed. "Redhead" self-drilling concrete expansion anchors are acceptable. 3. Single Pipe Runs: Support with adjustable swivel ring hangers. Wire type hangers are not acceptable. 4. Piping Supported from Walls or Columns: Use welded steel brackets and adjustable swivel ring hanger. 5. Standpipes Supported from Walls with Wrought Strap: Grinnell Fig.262. F. Sprinkler Head Sprinkler Rating per NFPA 13: degrees F. - fusible link degrees F. - glass bulb. G. Flow Switches: 1. Provide liquid flow switch at sprinkler main branches. Signal from switches shall be wired to fire alarm panel. 2. Wiring and panel shall be provided under Division Flow switch shall be of paddle type, tamper proof, adjustable retarding device to prevent false alarms from line surges. 4. Double pole, double throw microswitches to operate separate circuits, 120 VAC. H. Cooling Towers Deluge System: 1. The system shall consist of a deluge valve assembly capable of supplying water to a dry pipe installation with open cooling tower nozzles. Provide the following components: a. Deluge valve, 3-inch size, UL listed, FM approved, 90 degree pattern, standard flanged, 175 psi Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES
9 working pressure, valve differential of 2:1, cast bronze seat and clapper, cast iron body, complete with accessories such as emergency release, check valves, ball valve for priming and pressure operated relief valve. b. Pressure operated relief valve shall be brass with stainless steel and brass working parts, UL listed and FM approved, 175 psi working pressure and 5 to 7 psi operating pressure. c. Magnetic bypass unit consisting of a solenoid valve enclosed in a steel cabinet with strainer, relay, indicator light and reset button. Solenoid shall be of the normally open type and shall be rated at 120 V. Unit shall be factory assembled and prewired. Energizing the solenoid value through the fire alarm system shall charge the dry pipe sprinkler system. d. Open type brass cooling tower nozzles with U-clip provided for testing. U-clip must be removed after testing to put system in operation. Nozzles shall be UL listed and FM approved. e. Pressure switch, 125V, normally closed, single pole double throw, UL listed, and FM approved. Switch will turn off cooling tower fans in case of fire. f. Emergency release consisting of a brass body, chrome plated brass ball valve, quick opening, 250 psi working pressure, enclosed in a steel cabinet. 2. The system operation shall be as follows: a. Pressure is maintained in top chamber of deluge valve by an external bypass with a restricted orifice. b. Upon detector activation, the solenoid valve opens and releases water faster than it can be replaced thus allowing clapper to open and water to flow. Use open type nozzles for immediate release of water. c. Detectors shall be as specified in Section d. Minimum rates of application shall be as determined in NFPA 214; e. 0.5 gpm per square foot under fan decks of counterflow towers and over fill areas of crossflow towers. f gpm per square foot under fan decks of crossflow towers. 3. Protect the interior and exterior of the cooling tower. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES
10 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSTALLATION A. Fire Sprinkler System: 1. Arrangement and locations of fire protection systems shall be as indicated on Contractor's submittals and as specified. 2. Submit detailed drawings of proposed departures due to actual field conditions or other causes to the A/E. 3. Materials installed in fire sprinkler system shall be suitable for pressures and temperatures encountered. Installation shall be as required by NFPA and as specified. 4. Coordination of Drawings: a. Because of the scale of drawings, it is not possible to indicate required offsets, fittings, and accessories. b. Investigate structure and other trades involved including finish conditions affecting work and arrange such work accordingly. c. Furnish such fittings, valves, and accessories as needed to meet such conditions at no additional cost to the Board. d. Provide coordination drawings between this and all other trades. 5. Cutting and Repairing: Lay out in advance. Excessive cutting of construction is not allowed. Damage to buildings, piping, wiring, or equipment because of cutting for installation shall be repaired by mechanics skilled in the trade involved at no additional expense to the Board. 6. Protection to Materials and Equipment: Pipe openings shall be closed with caps or plugs during installation. Fixtures and equipment shall be tightly covered and protected against dirt, water, and chemical or mechanical injury. Upon completion of work, materials and equipment shall be thoroughly cleaned, adjusted, and operated. 7. Provide test and drain lines as required by NFPA 13. Pressure gauges, signs, and other standard appurtenances shall be furnished as required for a complete installation according to NFPA Install sprinkler piping so it can be thoroughly drained, and where practical, arranged to drain at the Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES
11 main drain valves. The main drain valve shall be capable of a full discharge test without allowing water to flow onto the floor. Drips and drains shall conform to NFPA 13. B. Piping Joints and Methods of Connection: Steel threaded pipe after cutting and before threading. Ream pipe and remove burrs. Make screw joints of lines tight with joint compound brush applied to male threads only. After installation, paint exposed threads as specified in the Painting Section. C. Escutcheons: Fit and firmly secure escutcheons to pipes passing through finished floors, ceilings and walls with escutcheons of sufficient outside diameter to cover sleeved openings. Set in fire retardant mastic. D. Piping: 1. Run piping enclosed in wall chases, partitions, and ceilings where provided. 2. Use reducing fittings for changes in pipe size. Bushings are not allowed. 3. Use extra heavy pipe for nipples where unthreaded portion is less than 1-1/2". Close nipples are not allowed. Use saddle nipples. E. Joints: 1. Make joints in screwed piping with acceptable compound on male threads only. Do not use lamp wick in joints. Threads shall be perfect, clean cut, and of proper length. Pipe shall be properly reamed after cutting and threading. 2. Make flanged joints with full face rubber gaskets or stainless steel. F. Hangers and Supports: 1. Properly support piping by accepted hangers and supports. 2. Chain, straps, perforated bar, or wire hangers are not allowed. 3. Provide necessary supplemental steel for proper support or attachment of hangers. G. Sleeves: Provide sleeves large enough to accommodate pipes passing through floors, ceilings, walls, or partitions. Pack sleeves through firewalls or slabs according to UL Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES
