3 Terms of the document Representations and warranties. All recommendations in this document and in any subsequent correspondence are made in good faith on the basis of information available to Eclipse Nursecall Systems (ENS) Ltd. the time of writing. In consequence, no statement in any document, report or letter is to be regarded as a representation or warranty of achievable results. ENS does not warrant that its work will not infringe any Intellectual Property Rights including patent, copyright, trademark or registered design. Exclusion of liability. Under no circumstances shall Ltd. be liable in contract, tort or otherwise for loss of profits, business or anticipated savings or for any other indirect or consequential economic loss resulting from the use of this report. 3 Limitations of work. The reader accepts that this document and any suggestions therein made should be considered as being for guidance only and not indicative of guaranteed achievable performance. Introduction This document will provide all the practical information on how to get the system working. Three different types of unit compose the system: Call Point Units (CP) Display Units (Display) Hub Units (Hub)
Network and wiring Clipper Plus & Clipper ID products have been designed to give a maximum of flexibility to install the network in all size and types of care facilities. To ease the wiring, the whole Clipper Plus & Clipper ID network will be split into local independent loops corresponding to a specific area or floor of the site. Figure : wiring architecture Global Wiring architecture The wiring architecture is flexible enough to accommodate most topologies. Where possible, a loop wiring will be preferred to optimise the power distribution (see fig. ) as opposed to a chain. A typical loop is composed of Hub, upto 5 Call Points (CP) and few Displays. (See power consideration to know the maximum number of units per loop). All the loops should be connected together to allow a full connectivity to the network. Each local loop can have its own power supply and is capable of working on its own. By connecting them together, by using more than one leg or in the case of large installations multiple hubs with inter hub links, one allows the network to share all the information (to extend the possible range of a call or to use a centralised PC to log and manage the Calls).
5 POWER Alarm cables are not designed to carry a lot of power a relatively long distance. TECH TIP: In some cases a thicker cable or more cores should be used to increase distance or to add more units seek advice! The voltage drop can be manually checked using a suitable meter. The furthest unit must have a least 8V to run. Looping back the run. Looping back the power lines would help the power distribution through the line. Figure gives an indication of the number of units that can run on a single leg, this is for guidance only (figures can vary depending on the installation). Distance Wiring PSU Cable used Maximum current (ma) 00m Chain V 8 core 35 core 650 >0.8mm for power 700 >.5mm for power 00 8V 8 core 700 core 00 >0.8mm for power 500 >.5mm for power m Loop Chain x (00m figures) x Call Point: 70mA Display: 50mA Figure : power consideration table, for guidance only In most installations, the power will use several cores to limit the voltage drop along the line. On all Clipper Plus & Clipper ID PCB's Input terminals are doubled in order to ease the wiring and make the junctions more reliable. Nevertheless, note that V red or blue and Ground black or brown are internally connected, using one or the other makes no difference at all. If the line is too long and the voltage drops below 8V in the furthest unit, it is possible to add an extra power supply to boost the power. Many booster PSU s can be introduced into the installation. Simply connect an external PSU on the V and GND of the furthest unit, Call Point or Display.
JUMPERS Call Point Jumpers Two types of Jumpers are present on every Clipper Plus & Clipper ID unit. The line jumper is used to terminate the data, no communication is possible further this point. The branch jumper is used to re route the Data to go through the feedback lines. This should be used only with the architecture with several legs + NO loop. Branch Branch Jumpers End Line Jumper Line SW SW V GND NO COM NC Door Mode GND OOB ALM JACK TIP RING GY CALL POINT SLEEVE Vcc Jumpers are always on the furthest unit from the hub.
7 Hub Jumpers When wiring, you don t necessarily need 3 legs. If leg or leg 3 is NOT used, you must put a jumper on the Hub unit. (JP7 if leg and leg 3 are not used. JP8 if leg 3 only is not used). See below. You ALWAYS have jumpers then, on the st and last. A A & B A & B & C A & B & C & D Jumpers are on RED colours.
8 The Hub Unit The Hub is an interface to connect the whole network together. It does not act as the master of a local loop. The hubs are linked with only cores, preferably twisted pair(cat 5 or better). If linking only two hubs, use Hub Link to Hub Link and jumper JP5. For links over 00m consider using multiple cores and avoid areas of high interference potential (motor rooms etc). A PC/server can be connected to a Hub for logging purpose or to administrate the network. Similarly, a paging system controlled by a Hub will add further connectivity and features to the Nurse Call system. A custom RS3 Cable is available from ENS for this purpose. It requires a hub to be situated no greater than 0m from the PC. HUB Leg Pager RS3 Serial Port to PC or Server possibly via USB Converter Programming Port Vcc PC Leg JP5 Hub Link Multi Hub Link JP 7 Hub Link Leg 3 From PSU -8v DC CLIPPER S JP 8 HUB LINK v DC Power POWER TIP: In multiple HUB installs get the Hubs in first, Powered up and inter connected, get the jumpers in place and add the legs removing the jumpers as you go. The hubs keep the settings updated, so if you introduce a second HUB to an existing Network you stand a chance that the system will think the latest settings (the default) in the newest HUB are the current ones and flood the network with default settings, overwriting your previous settings.
