BOC FS125 The Fire Extinguishing Solution
Background - Montreal Protocol With the introduction of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, Halon is no longer available in most countries and alternatives must be found. Halon will be phased out by 2010 and suitable replacements are required for both existing installations and new projects. The replacement agents are required to be more environmentally friendly Halon 1301 CFC s HCFC s (NAF SIII) Some ozone depletion HFC s ZERO ozone depletion Current alternatives for Halon 1301 include both HFC s and Inert gas systems such as FM200, Argonite, Inergen, etc.
Fire Suppression Types of Products CO 2 Dry Powder Foam Water Local Application Inert Gases FIRE SUPPRESSION AGENTS Inergen Argonite Total Flooding Halocarbons HFC227ea * (NAF S227, FM200, FE227) HFC 23 * (NAF S23, FE13) Nitrogen Argon CO 2 HFC 125 * (BOC FS125, FE25, NAF S125) HCFC Blend A * (NAF SIII) NOVEC 1230 C6-Perfluoroketone
Small spaces need big solutions
BOC Introduces BOC FS125 A patented Product manufactured by Safety Hi Tech, Italy A mixture of Pure HFC 125 & Additive Chemical name : Pentaflouroethane (99.85%) & d Limonine (0.15%) OXYGEN Extinguishes the Fire by Chemical reaction & Cooling effect. Additive increases the Extinguishing performance compared to Pure HFC 125 due to additive. Additive reduces the production of decomposition by products. FUEL CHEMICAL REACTION HEAT Can operate from a temperature of C to C NAF S125 works by absorbing the heat combined with chemical reaction
BOC FS125 is safe for the environment Environmental Properties Extinguishing Agents ODP Atmospheric life (years) Halon 1301 BOC FS 125 FM Source: Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion: 1998
Safe For Humans Hence Safe To Use in Manned & Unmanned Areas The PBPK model introduces a new scientific approach to determine safe exposure limits to halocarbons The PBPK model is specified in the NFPA 2001 Standard, Edition 2004 At the concentration of use NAF S 125 allows a safe exposure time limit of 5 minute NAF S 125 Concentration (% vol.) Safe Exposure Time (minutes)
Safe For Electrical / Electronic Equipments As it is Clear & Electrically Non Conductive. It does not leave any residue after Extinguishing the fire.
NAF S 125 Extinguishing and Design Concentrations in accordance with NFPA 2001 (2004 Edition) Extinguishing concentrations: Class A fires* (wood crib, sheets of ABS, PMMA and Polypropylene plastic): 6,7 % v/v C Class B fires (0,25 m² heptane pan): 8.7 % v/v C Design concentrations: Class A fires*: 8,0% v/v C Class B fires : 11,3% v/v C *Class A fuels represent most common applications protected by halocarbons, such as computer rooms, control rooms, electrical rooms, archives and museums
NAF S 125 is similar to Halon 1301 Extinguishing Agent Molecular Weight Boiling Point ( C) Vapor Pressure 20 C) Halon NAF S NAF S NAF S It distributes quickly and homogeneously inside the protected enclosure, reducing extinguishing times, decomposition by-products and damage Being Lighter than Halon 1301, it maintains the concentration even in the upper part of the protected enclosure, avoiding stratification and possible re-ignition
BOC Introduces BOC FS125 Fire Extinguishing system The BOC FS125 system is a 42 bar system in which BOC FS125 is stored in container & superpressurised upto 42 bar by Nitrogen, providing greater flexibility for design. Is designed by UL Listed software to ensure accuracy & max. Efficiency. Has better extinguishing performance compared to low pressue systems. Can travel more distance compared to low pressue systems. System Dischrge Time 10 sec
Components of BOC FS125 System Centralised system ITEM 1 DESCRIPTION MASTER CYLINDER SUPPLIED WITH: DEEP TUBE, FLANGE PROTECTOR CAP, LPG VALVE AND PRESSURE GAUGE SLAVE CYLINDER SUPPLIED WITH: DEEP TUBE, FLANGE PROTECTOR CAP, LPG VALVE AND PRESSURE GAUGE. 3 SOLENOID VALVE 4 MANUAL PNEUMATIC RELEASE 5 PRESSURE SWITCH WITH LOCKING DEVICE 6 2 WAYS PNEUMATIC CONE 7 Ø 1/4" FLEXIBLE HOSE 8 1 WAYS PNEUMATIC CONE + DECOMPRESSION SCREW 9 U BRACKET 10 MANIFOLD 11 NON RETURN VALVE 12 DISCHARGE HOSE 13 BRACKET
BOC FS125 Approvals and Testing The BOC FS125 System is UL Listed. Thoroughly tested to the strictest standard BOC FS125 is designed to the NFPA 2001 Standard for Clean Agents BOC FS125 has been tested according to ISO 14520, Part 1 Annex C (Class A fire tests) BOC FS125 has been tested to International Maritime Organization (IMO) MSC/Circ. 848

Typical Total Flooding System Applications Transportation (Airports, Train Stations) Computer Rooms Hospitals Laboratories TYPICAL APPLICATIONS BOC FS125 Libraries, Archives Servers, Data Storage Rooms Shipping Industry Petrochemical, Offshore
The Difference with BOC FS125 The NAF S125 blend is patented because it contains an innovative detoxifying additive BOC FS125 has better extinguishing performance - 20% Less agent required than FM200 (HFC227ea) - 32% Less agent required than FE13 (HFC 23) BOC FS125 has been approved to operate from a temperature of C to C The addition of d-limonene increases the extinguishing performance compared to pure HFC 125 d-limonene reduces the production of any decomposition by-products
Advantages of NAF S125 versus Inert Gases Fewer cylinders are needed to extinguish the same fire compared to inert gas systems Less cylinders means: Lower system cost Less storage space required Low maintenance costs Fast extinguishment (Discharge in 10 seconds compared to 60 seconds for Inert gases) Faster discharge = Less damages caused by the fire
Comparison of Clean Agent Systems for Protection of 1000 m 3 Class A Risk (Paper, Cloth, Plastic, etc) Extinguishing Agent Quantity of Agent Number of Cylinders Occupied Floor Space (m3) Halon 1301* 331 kg 3 of 120L 0.51 BOC FS kg 4 of 120L 0.68 HFC 227ea (FM200) 548 kg 5 of 120L 0.85 HFC 23 (FE 13) 644 kg 6 of 120L 1.20 FK (Novec 1230) 723 kg 7 of 120L 1.20 IG-55 Argonite m3 32 of 80L 5.77 IG-100 Nitrogen m3 34 of 80L 7.01 IG-541 Inergen m3 31 of 80L 6.40 * Halon 1301 is no longer available in non-essential applications with the exception of Korea and China
