1 2017 ANNUAL REPORT
2 FIRE AND RESCUE Town of Mount Pleasant Fire Rescue was first formed by the Mount Pleasant Town Council in Prior to that time, all firefighting efforts were not officially organized. Tally Donaldson was the first recorded fire chief in The first known fire apparatus placed in service was an 1880 s hand drawn pumper manufactured by the Howe Fire Apparatus Company. It was pulled by hand to the scene of a fire where local cisterns were used for water supply. The hand pumper is currently on display at Town Hall in its fully-restored condition. Fire Rescue is currently an all-hazards department serving over 84,170 residents and visitors from seven strategically positioned fire stations within a 52-square-mile service area. The department trains and equips firefighters to provide fire suppression, basic and advanced life support, technical rescue, marine firefighting-rescue, wildland fire services, hazardous materials mitigation and community risk reduction. Fourty firefighter paramedics provide advance life support services supported by two medical control physicians. Today, 118 uniformed personnel operate on three separate 24-hour rotational shifts. The Town is separated geographically into a north and south battalion. Each battalion is managed by a Battalion Chief. Shift personnel work in tandem with Charleston County Emergency Medical Services to provide the highest level of safety and advanced medical care possible to the residents of the Town of Mount Pleasant.
