Coordination of fire alarm requirements with NFPA 72 to ensure NFPA 820 is not in conflict and that its definitions of FAS and FDS are consistent with NFPA 72. i. Name: NFPA 72 Coordination ii. Purpose: Review NFPA 72 and NFPA 820 and report back to the committee with a recommendation (October 2012). iii. Scope: Review Tables 4.2, 5.2, 6.2(a), and 6.2(b) for FAS and FDS and see if the material is in accordance with the most recent edition of NFPA 72. iv. Roster: Claudio Groppetti, Clark Henry b. Examination of the exclusions in to see if modifications or clarifications are necessary. For example, does the size of a facility (MGD), wastewater composition, or point of discharge have a bearing on the exclusions? Does industrial sewer really mean industrial pre-treatment sewer? Is there a logical explanation for the exclusions in this paragraph? Historical background information does not presently exist on the development of this section. i. Name: Industrial Treatment Systems ii. Purpose: Analyze the applicability and scope for NFPA 820 with regards to industrial or on-site treatment. Additionally, consider a residential component for 820 (Definition for Residential Sewer [ ] and the basis for the not more than five language in Table 4.2 Rows 8 & 9). Consider possible Annex A information that provides clarification and explanation of and Table 4.2 Row 8 & 9.

4 iii. Roster: Jim Wheeler, Garr Jones c. Chapter 9 in its entirety to ensure it is consistent with NFPA 91 and the ACGIH industrial ventilation manual. This may also result in other changes to the standard. For example the A, B and C designations in Tables 4.2, 5.2 and 6.2(a). i. Name: Ventilation ii. Purpose: Review Chapter 9 and determine if the quantitative and qualitative values in NFPA 820 are still written to be in accordance with the most recent edition of NFPA 91. iii. Roster: Garr Jones, Glenn McGinley d. Development of new text for controlling hazards from combustible dust. NFPA 820 Table 6.2(b) classifies several locations with respect to combustible dust hazards; however, the document text does not address specific hazard control measures for combustible dust. Specifically, dust from the storage of biosolids and activated carbon. NOTE: Activated carbon is more common in water purification (drinking water) plants; however, it is used from time to time in wastewater plants. Identify other common WWTP powdered chemicals that may introduce dust hazards and determine if the hazards pose risks of fire and explosion. i. Name: Combustible Dusts ii. Purpose: Review and prepare guidance to be placed within the standard for combustible dust as a hazard. A reference to NFPA 654 could even provide some appropriate guidance. iii. Roster: Glenn McGinley, Jim Wheeler e. Development of new text for electricity co-generation facilities at wastewater treatment plants. NFPA 820 should incorporate or at least coordinate any applicable information from NFPA 850 and the Fuel Gas Code. i. Name: Electric Co-Generation ii. Purpose: Review electric co-generation and how the process requirements fit into NFPA 820 or other NFPA documents. iii. Roster: John Harrell, Christine Harmon 4. Additional Task Group Suggestions from Committee (Time Permitting) a. Lift-Station Submersible Pumps Connections and Classifications i. Roster: John Harrell, Brad Cyrus, Clark Henry, Bob Domkowski b. Fine-Screening i. Where does fine-screening fit in the tables when it is installed after primary sedimentation and before an MBR. ii. Purpose: Research to determine if clarification in the standard can be added as one of the following; New footnote to Table 5.2 as part of the process; or, New text to address operations after primary sedimentation; or, New Line 5.2 Row 1 Line d.

Possible definition revision (add fixed ) or annex to clarify that the CGD is intended for monitoring and possible build-up of explosive atmospheres. 6 The Technical Committee on the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) is considering changes that would result in expanding the definition of fuel gas to include bio-gas and other non-traditional hydrocarbon fuel gases. The task group assigned to this effort is requesting 2-3 volunteers from the Technical Committee on Wastewater Treatment Plants to assist. The task group will begin simply by addressing the definition of gases currently used in NFPA 54: Gases. Include natural gas, manufactured gas, liquefied petroleum (LP) gas in the vapor phase only, liquefied petroleum gas air mixtures, and mixtures of these gases, plus gas air mixtures within the flammable range, with the fuel gas or the flammable component of a mixture being a commercially distributed product. The task group may also look at the gas piping materials and inspection requirements if there are special considerations that must be given to bio-gas and other non-traditional hydrocarbon fuel gases due to high concentrations of non-hydrocarbon constituents such as nitrogen or sulfur. NFPA 54 is in the Annual 2014 revision cycle, so we are hoping to have code revisions available for the Second Draft review in the third quarter of 2013.
