4 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Product description Linear heat alarm. Sensor cable up to 300 m may be used (dependant on ambient temperature). Temperature increases are detected in proportion to the length of cable heated. The sensor cable is stable against mechanical and chemical influences, corrosion, moisture and dust. Easy and economical to install. Easy to use and no special tools required. The alarm display complies with DIN parallel display for fire alarms. VdS approval applied for. DT650L for connection to conventional fire panels. DT950L for connection to analogue addressable fire panels (950 series protocol). The sensor cable surveillance system allows the early detection of a fire by detecting the overheating of conveyor belts, cable ducts or road tunnels, etc. It can be installed on the ceiling or in a cable duct. The sensor cable occupies little space and detects heat changes even under harsh environmental conditions where other fire detection systems may not be sufficiently resistant to causing false alarms. The system consists of the sensor cable (coaxial cable), the DT650L or DT950L controller and the terminal box. The sensor cable consists of an inner and outer conductors in the form of wire mesh. The insulation between the two conductors is a plastic material with negative temperature coefficients. At the end of the sensor cable the conductors are attached to a terminal box with a termination resistor. The entire circuit is constantly monitored for open and short circuits, whereupon a fault is reported. In the event of a temperature change there is a corresponding change in the electrical resistance between the two conductors. The resistance decreases with increasing temperature. The sensor cable is available with standard polyester sheath with a Rilsan sheath, resistant to acids and alkalis, and a stainless steel sheath that has a very high mechanical strength. It is also available with a combined Rilsan / stainless steel sheath. If the sensor cable is heated above 150 C the part can no longer be used for detection and must be replaced. 4 DT650L / DT950L Installation and Commissioning Manual
5 2 PLANNING AND INSTALLATION This product must be installed by qualified personnel adhering to VdS, EN-54 5 and any other applicable standards or local authority laws. 2.1 Planning guidelines The DT650L / DT950L sensor cable system, in connection with the sensor cables, is installed directly in the alarm area. Before installing the sensor cable system, draw a ground plan of the area to be monitored which shows the path of the sensor cables. The path must observe VdS and DIN requirements. The following points must be taken into account: The sensor cable should not come into direct contact with material that acts as a cooler and so causing a delay in temperature detection. Do not lay the sensor cable against sharp objects and avoid pinching, so that the outer insulation of the cable is not damaged. To extend the sensor cable, use only suitable terminal boxes with stress relievers. Soldering must be used to connect conductors and shielding. The curvature radius of the sensor cable must be at least 20 mm. The sensor cable should not be fixed directly with cable trusses. Always use a rubber or PVC protector between the sensor cable and cable truss or cable clip. Usually 1 cm of insulation from an NYM cable is sufficient. The sensor cable has a limited tensile strength. This must be taken into account when laying the cable and where it changes direction, especially after points where it has been repaired or extended. The distance between the fastening clips should be between 0.6 and 1.2 m. Avoid laying the sensor cable near objects that radiate substantial amounts of heat. These could be strong light sources, steam pipes, waste pipes, etc. The controller, sensor cable and terminal box must be installed in the same fire zone. Fix the sensor cable to the ceiling or in the cable duct with suitable clips, without pinching the cable. Label the controller with a name plate and install it at a height of 1800 (+100/-200) mm. 2.2 Installation environment VdS planning regulations apply to heat alarms The height of the space should not exceed 6 m. The sensor cable should be laid in the shape of a meander. VdS planning regulations apply to heat alarms. Make sure that the distance between the wall and the sensor cable is at least 1.5 m. This also applies when the cable is laid along beams. It is possible to cross ceiling beams. However, the length of sensor cable on ceiling beams should not exceed 10% of the total cable length. DT650L / DT950L Installation and Commissioning Manual 5
6 2.3 Installation Before installation ensure that the sensor cable is not damaged. Several systems can be used to fix the sensor cable. However, it is important that the sensor cable is not damaged. ISO pressure clips have proved best for use on ceilings. However, the sensor cable has a diameter of only 3 mm and must not be pinched. A piece of PVC insulation from an NYM cable should always be inserted for protection between the clip or cable truss and the sensor cable. 2.4 Connections The PCB is located in the plastic housing behind a cover. All LEDs in the DT650L / DT950L are located behind the cover within the IP65 protection. For connection, a 9-pin terminal strip is provided. Pin assignments are in accordance with the following connection diagram Connecting the DT650L / DT950L Connection is made at the controller to the 9-way terminal block. The far end of the sensor cable must be connected to the termination box. Figure 1: DT650L jumper configuration Jumper A connected: Jumper B connected: No Jumper connected: Test mode. DT950L: a yellow LED indicates that the loop isolator is active. DT650L: a green LED indicates that power is on and no fault is present. The sensor cable is like a parallel circuit of sections of equal impedance. Thus 1 m at 20 C has impedance in the megohm range. If 1 m is then heated to 90 C, the impedance drops to about 38 kilohms. This is now in parallel with the resistance of the terminal box and thus gives the alarm criterion of 4.7 kilohms. If a length greater than 1 m is heated (e.g., 5 m to 65 C) then the alarm criterion is 4.7 kilohms. The ambient temperature has not been taken into account in these examples. The combinations of cable length and temperature producing an alarm are shown in Figure 5: Relationship of the length of cable heated to the alarm temperature. These values cannot be measured with a conventional multimeter! Once the sensor cable has been laid and the control unit and terminal box have been installed the system must be calibrated. This is necessary to compensate for: The length of cable connected. The maximum ambient temperature expected. DT650L / DT950L Installation and Commissioning Manual 7
8 2.5.3 Calibration 1. Determine the maximum ambient temperature expected. 2. Determine the actual length of the sensor cables. 3. From Figure 3: Relationship between the length of cable and the ambient temperature obtain the applicable value for these conditions. 4. Set this value on the DIP switch in the terminal box, as shown in Figure 4: DIP switch settings in the termination box. Calibration must be checked and, if necessary, repeated at each maintenance. If the total length of the sensor cable is unknown when the device is first used, it can be determined approximately by using a multimeter. To do this, clamp off the sensor cable at the terminal box and at the evaluation unit. On one side, short circuit the inner conductor with the shielding and then measure the resistance. The measurable resistance should be about 20 ohms per 100 m. The sensor cable thus has a resistance of about 0.2 ohm/m (depending on the internal resistance of the measuring device). The length of the cable is calculated as follows: resistance (ohms) = length (m) 0.2 Figure 3: Relationship between the length of cable and the ambient temperature Temp C Length in meters C C C C C C C C Figure 4: DIP switch settings in the termination box Number DIP1 DIP2 DIP3 DIP4 1 on on on on 2 on on on off 3 on on off on 4 on on off off 5 on off on on 6 on off on off 7 on off off on 8 on off off off 9 off on on on 10 off on on off 11 off on off on 12 off on off off 8 DT650L / DT950L Installation and Commissioning Manual
