3 Cerex CMS Software All Cerex analyzers use Continuous Monitoring Software. CMS provides the user interface, data-logging and analytic gas detection and quantification functionality. Target gas concentrations and alarm parameters are reported each user configured acquisition cycle. Running in user-familiar Windows on the integrated computer, CMS controls are as intuitive as operating a personal computer or smartphone. Installing the Sentry-MS with internet access, or adding an optional cellular modem adds powerful realtime remote control and data access functionality. Alarms may be automatically ed to any address when gas concentrations exceed user-configurable alarm thresholds, and data may be automatically ed daily. For local operation the Sentry-MS is equipped with integrated WiFi. Simply use a common VNC utility for access to CMS, data and instrument status. The CMS Data tab displays per acquisition gas concentration, data validity and visual alarms. Trended concentration data is available at a glance on the CMS Data Summary tab. The instantaneous single beam plot of the UV tab is used for aligning the analyzer and retro-reflector. 5 UVDOAS Principle of Operation The Cerex Sentry MS operates by sending a beam of UV light through the open air. The UV beam is reflected back to the analyzer by a retro-reflector cube (mono-static), where the absorption due to target gases is measured and recorded. The analyzer uses a classical least squares regression analysis to compare the measured absorption spectrum to calibrated reference absorption spectra files per USEPA TO-16 Methodology. Beer s Law is used to report accurate gas concentrations. Mono-static Design and Installation The Sentry-MS is a mono-static design and may be installed and collecting data in minutes to allow rapid response to odor complaints, for toxic spill, leakage and release monitoring, plume dispersion modeling, IAQ characterization, community and work site hazard mitigation, and more. The use of a retro-reflector results in the UV beam passing through the same air twice. This creates a sample path twice the separation distance between the analyzer and retro-reflector. The double-pass allows low minimum detection limits at relatively small separation distances between the analyzer and retro-reflector. Appx meters max for Xenon Appx. 225 meters max for Deuterium Sentry MS Analyzer (Transceiver) uses a pan and tilt head for tripod or fixed mounting. Power is required only at this end. UV Source Options The Sentry-MS is available with either a Deuterium or Xenon UV source. The advantage of Deuterium is high sensitivity to a larger set of detectable gases. The advantage of Xenon is long distance monitoring. Detection Capabilities The Cerex Sentry-MS is a multi-gas analyzer. Available with our standard gas reference files (Table on right), or with application specific reference files to accommodate the minimum detection limit requirements of the exact monitoring installation. Individual gas species or aggregate concentrations may be reported at your specified MDL. To determine the Path Averaged MDLs for a particular installation using the standard Cerex library, divide the Path Integrated Minimum detection Limit (PPMm) value (Table on Right) by the sample path length in meters (twice the distance between the analyzer and retro-reflector). See Table on next Page. Retro-reflector offers simple alignment and reliable performance. 6 CONTACT: 1816 Briarwood Industrial Court, Suite D Detectable Compounds and Typical Detection Performance of the Cerex Standard Gas Library In this example installation, the Sentry-MS and retro-reflector are separated by 150 meters to create a 300 meter sample path. The table below specifies the minimum detection limits when using the Cerex standard reference library. For specialized, application specific detection ranges contact us. 150 meters between the Sentry-MS and Retroreflector creates a 300 meter sample path. Currently there are a number of definitions of detection limits used to characterize the performance of air monitoring systems. A common definition of is the magnitude of the absorbance spectra that is twice the system noise. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s Compendium of Methods for the Determination of Toxic Organic Compounds in Ambient Air - Second Edition Compendium Method TO-16 Long-Path Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared Monitoring Of Atmospheric Gases defines detection limits as the following: The detection limit of the Sentry-MS system is a dynamic quantity that will change as the atmospheric conditions change. The variability of the target gas, and all of the other interfering species concentrations contributes to the variability of this measurement. The detection limit as determined in this procedure is the result of a calculation using a set of 15 individual absorption spectra. The 16 individual single beam spectra used for this determination are acquired in 5-min intervals and no time is allowed to elapse between them. The absorption spectra are then created by using the first and the second single beam spectra, the second and the third, and the third and the fourth, and so on until the 15 absorption spectra are obtained. These absorption spectra are analyzed in exactly the same way that all field spectra are to be analyzed and over the same wave number region. The analysis should result in a set of numbers that are very close to zero because most of the effects of the gas variability have been removed. The numerical results should be both positive and negative and for a very large set of data should average to zero. Three times the standard deviation of this calculated set of concentrations is defined to be the detection limit. Although Method TO-16 was written for open path FTIR, the Cerex Sentry-MS system is unique among UV systems in that the raw data is essentially identical to an FTIR Single beam file. Hence the direct correlation drawn to TO-16. Using the detection limit definition described in TO-16, CEREX developed the detection limits that are listed here, however it should be noted that the actual detection limits achieved in the field will vary. This is primarily due to the fact that variations in interfering species will result in variability in detection limits. Cerex considers the detection limits listed to be a very conservative estimate. The end-user of the equipment will likely achieve much better results in the field. Cerex believes it is a good policy to not oversell a capability to our potential customers.
