Its comprehensive electronics allows easy operation and maintenance and also increases the operational safety and accuracy. The special features of the EC24 are: Easy calibration at site. Service lid for adjustment of zero point and sensitivity. Compensation of temperature effects. Depending on the model, the EC24 is available with built-in or external sensor, providing an output signal of either ma or ma. 3

Transmitter Type MWG 2411 MWG 2412 MWG 2413 MWG 2414 Explosion protection Yes Yes No no Sensor built-in built-in external external Output ma 4-20 ma ma 4-20 ma Operational Hints According to national regulations gas warning devices have to be checked by a specialist for function after installation but before being brought into service (putting into operation). For Germany "BGR 500 chapter 2.33" (UVV Gase, BGV B6 - formerly VBG 61) is applicable. Before shipment, the EC24 passes a function and display test, being calibrated with suitable test gases. This does not, however, overrule the obligation of putting into operation with test gas after the installation. The transmitters MWG 2411 and MWG 2412 are approved for the use in explosion endangered areas of zone 2 as per EN and can be used according to directive 2014/34/EU: Labelling: II 3G EEx nr [L] IIC T6 X -20 C Ta +50 C Important for NH 3 measurement After an exposure to a NH 3 concentration of more than 400 ppm the sensitivity of the transmitter has to be checked. Securing the Explosion Protection The next paragraph refers only to transmitter models MWG 2411 and MWG Installation, putting in operation and opening the service lid, the transmitter enclosure or the cable entry is only allowed in the absence of combustible gases and vapors. Once the above work is completed, the transmitter enclosure, the service lid and the! cable entry must be closed. The explosion protection of the transmitter is secured by an almost gas-tight closure. In case the transmitter is not connected to a GfG controller, the voltage supply outside the transmitter must be protected by means of a fuse of max. 200mA! Detection Principle The EC24 uses an electrochemical cell, which generally contains an electrolyte, a working electrode (anode), a counter electrode (cathode) and a reference electrode. The cell is adapted to the gas to be monitored by specific electrodes and a suitable electrolyte. The electrochemical reaction generates an electrical signal, which is proportional to the gas concentration. This signal is amplified by the EC 24 and used for display resp. transmission. The sensor cells are using the capillary diffusion barrier technology, which, in combination with an additional temperature compensation, avoids effects caused by changing atmospherical pressure and temperature. Some sensor cells are available with a pre-filter to improve their selectivity. Design The design of the EC24 is shown in fig. 2. The exact transmitter type is mentioned on the type label (pos. 3). The sensor cell is protected by the sensor holder (pos. 10). Behind the service lid (pos. 7) you find the potentiometers for zeropoint and sensitivity (calibration) adjustment as well as test sockets for connecting a meter to check both the zeropoint and the sensitivity (see fig. 3). The casing contains the main board and the calibration card. The circuits on the main board convert the sensor signal into an output current of ma or ma. The calibration card collects the adjustment elements. The sensor holder includes the sensor board with the components for controlling the sensor. 4

Transmitter EC24 Design Fig. 2 Mounting Position of EC24 It is essential to exactly know the ambient conditions, which have to be taken into consideration before deciding on the mounting position. To achieve representative measurement results, take care of the room ventilation and the gas density. Install the EC 24 at a place where the gases pass the sensor even in case of bad ventilation. If necessary, use a smoke cartridge to check. Furthermore, take the following into consideration as well: Rain water, hose water, dripping water, condensate and dust in the atmosphere. The EC24 is to a great extent protected against the entering of water and dust. Special accessories are available to provide additional protection for very difficult conditions. Please contact GfG for detailed information.! Warranty may be voided, if the sensor is exposed to ambient conditions which were unknown to GfG during planning, production or delivery. 5

When deciding on the position for the transmitter, make sure that it is always accessible for service and maintenance. It is recommended to mount the EC24 with the sensor showing to the floor. Different installation, however, does not affect the measurement accuracy. Mounting! Refer to Securing the Explosion Protection on page 4. For connecting the EC24 refer to the terminal diagram (page 15) and to the connection diagram EC24 (page 15). For mounting the transmitter remove the four special screws (fig. 2, pos. 9) and take the casing top off. Fix the casing by means of two borings. Installation of Electrical Connections! Refer to Securing the Explosion Protection on page 4. Procurement of cable and electrical connections must be done by a specialist only, obeying the applicable regulations. Depending on the model or the operation of the EC24, a shielded 2- or 3-core cable has to be used (e.g. LIYCY 3 x 0.75 mm²). The shield is laid on the cable entry. Should the transmitter be mounted to electrically conductive material (e.g. steel beam), a potential compensation must be effected (fig. 3). Connection Connection Potential compensation MWG 2411 / MWG 2413 MWG 2412 / MWG 2414 Potential compensation (min. 4 mm 2 ) Transmitter Cable entry e.g. steel beam V Ground ma V Ground ma Sensor Controller Controller Fig. 3 For models with external sensor: In case you separate the cable with its connector plug from the transmitter casing, remove the sensor cell from the sensor holder. Then put a short circuit bridge on the two soldering pins of the p.c.board to avoid accelerated ageing. Remove this short circuit bridge before re-fitting the sensor cell. The above also applies on all other EC24 models with the a.m. soldering pins on their p.c.board. Fix the casing top with the four special screws after installation. 6

Putting in Operation! Refer to Securing the Explosion Protection on page 4. Once the EC24 is installed, a skilled person can put it in operation. The EC24 has been calibrated and tested before shipment. Check of Electrical Zeropoint! Refer to Securing the Explosion Protection on page 4. The EC24 is calibrated and tested before shipment. Certain deviations, however, are possible due to transport, mounting and ambient conditions. Allow a warm-up time of about 30 minutes before checking the electrical zeropoint. Once the warm-up is finished, you can check the voltage at the test sockets (U M ) behind the service lid of the EC24 (fig. 4) and read the value at your GMA controller (please refer to the operation manual for your GMA). Service lid Connector UM for volt meter Potentiomete "ZEROPOINT" Potentiomete "CALIBRATION" Fig. 4 7

Please adhere to the following procedure to check the electrical zeropoint: Make sure that the alarm cannot be transmitted. Toxic gases Oxygen (O 2 ) Is there any interfering gas present? no yes Use calibration adapter to supply zero Zero gas means: For toxic gases: Air without interfering gas For oxygen: 100 Vol. % nitrogen (N 2 ) Open service lid at MWG. Connect voltmeter to UM plug (fig. 4). Is UM = 0.2 V? yes no Use potentiometer NULL to adjust the zeropoint until UM = 0.2 V. Close service lid at MWG. Check and if necessary adjust UN at the GMA controller. Please refer to the operation manual of your GMA controller! Ensure that alarms are transmitted again. After zeropoint adjustment have a look on the display for another 2 minutes. If the display remains stable, you can now check the sensitivity. For EC24 for oxygen: Do not turn potentiometer "Null", unless you are sure that the transmitter is exposed to 100 % vol. nitrogen (N 2 ). Check of Sensitivity! Refer to Securing the Explosion Protection on page 4. Fix a calibration adapter on the diffusion inlet for checking the sensitivity and select a suitable test gas. Then check which gas has been used for initial calibration of the transmitter. You can see this information from the test report and from the type label at the transmitter. The test gas concentration should be at least 20 % above the second alarm threshold. Please refer to the test report for the basic adjustment of alarm thresholds and full scale.! Handling toxic gases requires specific safety measures. Take good note of Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), which give hints for the hazards toxic gases may cause. 8

Adhere to the following procedure to check the sensitivity: Make sure that the alarm cannot be transmitted. Fix calibration adapter to MWG. Open service lid at MWG. Supply test gas to the sensor without pressure and with a flow rate of about 0.5 l/min. For toxic gases the test gas concentration should be about 20 % b the highest alarm threshold (see test report). For oxygen use air without interfering gases or a mixture of O 2, N 2, e.g. 10 % O2, as test gas. After 1 minute the MWG should read the value of the supplied concentration. For toxic gases the voltage at UM must be 1 V for full scale deflection. For oxygen the voltage at UM is V in air (O2 = 20.9 Vol.-%) Other values for UM can be seen from the calibration curve. Is the measured value equivalent to the calibration curve? yes no Use potentiometer "CAL" to adjust the calibration point and to set UM to the value seen from the calibration curve. Check and if necessary adjust UN value at controller. Please refer to the operation manual of your GMA control module. Remove test gas and calibration adapter. Close service lid at MWG. Ensure that the alarm can be transmitted i Maintenance and repair The maintenance and servicing includes regular visual inspection, functional check and the system control as well as the repair of the gas warning system. In Germany the following applies: "DGUV Information (data sheet T 021 / previously BGI 836 section 9)" and "DGUV Information (data sheet T 023 / previously BGI 518 section 9)". The functional check can be carried out at intervals dependent on the risk of the gas to be monitored. For gas detection systems used for explosion protection, there should be a control period of 4 months, for the measurement of toxic gases and oxygen 6 months, according to the regulations T 021 and T 023 of the Employer's Liability Insurance Association BG RCI. This includes the following activities: - Visual inspection - Triggering the alarm thresholds - Triggering of test functions for display elements, visual and audible signalling device without triggering the switching functions 9

- Check of stored messages, malfunctions and maintenance requirements The repair includes all repair and replacement work. They may only be performed by the manufacturer and by persons who have been authorised by the manufacturer GfG Gesellschaft für Gerätebau mbh. Only approved and released original spare parts from the manufacturer as well as original components may be used. Service According to the German "Regulation for Explosion Protection", "BGR 500, 2.33" and DIN 31051, service stands for maintenance, inspection and repair of gas warning equipment. Regulation T023 of "BG Chemie" describes the relating measures, among others requesting a regular function check. This function check means: Check of zeropoint and sensitivity (calibration) Check of response time Check of gas sampling and gas processing system (if any) Check of alarm signal activation Check of failure alarm The check must be done by an expert, who has to report the result in written form. Generally the calibration intervals should not exceed 16 weeks. The function check is to be done before putting the system in operation, and it has to be done at least once a year. Maintenance and Inspection Maintenance and inspection mean measures which ensure the planned status of the gas monitoring system. Although the EC24 does not require a special maintenance, you should take care of some points. Depending on the ambient conditions, gas monitoring systems may show a different behaviour. It is important, therefore, to do a visual check every day. Check of gas processing system and filters (if any). Check of gas supply for soiling or obstacles (for correct measurement the gas supply to the sensor must not be blocked). Electrochemical sensors are subject to ageing and exhausting. Depending on their type and on their exposure to gas they should be replaced after a period of 12 to 24 months. A sensitivity check can only be done with a suitable test gas. The sensitivity calibration is an expert calibration and is usually done by GfG's service or by authorized persons.
