Programmable Smoke Detector Kit The E PC driven demonstrator kit is for demonstration purpose of the smoke-detector device functionality. It supports communication between PC and smoke detector based on E using the USB<->LIN converter. The E device inside the smoke detector has a special firmware to communicate with the PC using the same protocol. The PC demo software provide smoke detector device control and parameter modification with graphical output. For demonstration purpose it is necessary to establish a communication between smoke detectors and PC using physical sequential interface on two wire bus (LN24 using LIN line and GND). All smoke detectors can be connected to LN24 in parallel but every smoke detector must have a unique device address. The programmed device address is written on the smoke detector. 1/7

2 5 Start of Demo Software: The Demo software will look like this : Figure 2. Start screen The Menu Bar gives the following options, see figure 2: File : Load and save console messages and close to quit program EERPOM : read EEPROM data from smoke detector and write data back into E EEPROM area only if serial connecting is established About : Information about program revision This Icon gives the following option if COM connection is not yet established, see figure 2: Open COM connection : choose right COM port number of USB<->LIN converter. If the COM port number was correctly chosen the PC software detects automatically the right device address of the smoke-detector, see figure 3 These Icons give the following options if COM connection is established working with one device: Close COM connection Run mode : measurement cycle every second of 9 smoke density values Halt all : stop communication Start one measurement : measure smoke density and output value in console Get one pack with data : measure some density and temperature and display in graph and slider Set LED Current and AMP gain : transfer the slider value of LED Current and AMP Gain into the E These Icons give the following options if COM connection is established working with multi devices, see figure 5: Close COM connection Run mode : measurement cycle every second of 9 smoke density values Halt all : stop communication Find devices in line : scan the the BUS for available smoke-detector devices with other device addresses Connect smoke detector and start communication: Click the Open COM connection button and choose the right COM port. After connecting to the smoke-detector the PC software changes to the multi device mode and scans the bus for available smoke-detector devices, see figure 3. Optionally change to one device mode and click Run icon. The smoke density results consisting of 9 measurement values and the temperature values are now updated every second. 2/7

5 Figure 7. Window in one device mode during measurement and smoke detection To change LED current or AMP Gain stop the communication by clicking the red square button. Change LED Current and AMP gain value by moving the corresponding slider. Transfer the new data by clicking the SET LED Current and AMP Gain icon. Run the measurements and the results should be different. Figure 7 shows a smoke detection warning due to a oversized amplification. To change EEPROM values the following is necessary : Halt the measurements (no Run mode) set one device mode set correct device address click EEPROM in the menu bar The following window will appear : 5/7

6 Figure 8. EEPROM view and modify window Change to expert mode and click Read all EEPROM cells on top left. The EEPROM content will appear, see below. Figure 9. EEPROM window after content reading The first column on the left show the register name. The second column show the actual content of the register. To change the content double click into one cell and write the new data in hexadecimal 16 Bit form even it is 8Bit value (e.g. 0x00e3). Then press the Enter key on the keyboard. The new value is now transferred into EEPROM of E At the right column the corresponding EEPROM address map is shown. For more details please see Data Sheet 25DS0063E.XX 6/7
