Product description 3 Product description 3.1 Configuration Scope of deivery Components The scope of deivery encompasses: OPTISWITCH 3100 C eve sensor Documentation - this operating instructions manua - Suppementary instructions manua "Pug connector for eve sensors" (optiona) - Ex specific safety instructions (with Ex versions), if necessary further certificates OPTISWITCH 3100 C consists of the foowing components: Housing cover Housing with eectronics process fitting with tuning fork Fig. 1: OPTISWITCH 3100 C with pastic housing 1 Housing cover 2 Housing with eectronics 3 Process fitting 3.2 Principe of operation Area of appication OPTISWITCH 3100 C is a eve sensor with tuning fork for eve detection. It is designed for industria use in a areas of process technoogy and is preferaby used for buk soids. Typica appications are overfi and dry run protection. Thanks to its simpe and robust measuring system, OPTISWITCH 3100 C is virtuay unaffected by the chemica and physica properties of the buk soid. OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch 7
Product description It functions even when exposed to strong externa vibration or changing products. Soid detection in water If OPTISWITCH 3100 C was ordered for detection of soids in water, the tuning fork is adjusted to the density of water. In the air or when covered by water (density: 1 g/cm³/0.036 bs/in) OPTISWITCH 3100 C signas "uncovered". Ony if the vibrating eement is aso covered with soids (e.g. sand, sudge, grave etc.) wi the sensor signa "covered". Faut monitoring The eectronics of OPTISWITCH 3100 C continuousy monitors the foowing criteria: Correct vibrating frequency Line break to the piezo drive If one of the stated mafunctions is detected or in case of power faiure, the eectronics takes on a defined switching condition, i.e. the contactess eectronic switch opens (safe condition). Physica principe Power suppy The tuning fork is piezoeectricay energised and vibrates at its mechanica resonance frequency of approx. 150 Hz. When the tuning fork is submerged in the product, the vibration ampitude changes. This change is detected by the integrated osciator and converted into a switching command. OPTISWITCH 3100 C is a compact instrument, i.e. it can be operated without externa evauation system. The integrated eectronics evauates the eve signa and outputs a switching signa. With this switching signa, a connected device can be directy activated (e.g. a warning system, a PLC, a pump etc.). The exact range of the power suppy is stated in the "Technica data" in the "Suppement". 3.3 Operation With the factory setting, products with a density of >0.02 g/cm³ (> bs/in³) can be measured. The instrument can aso be adapted to products with ower density >0.008 g/cm³ (> bs/in³). On the eectronics modue you wi find the foowing indicating and adjustment eements: signa amp for indication of the switching condition (green/ red) 8 OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch
Product description potentiometer for adaptation to the product density Mode switch for seecting the switching condition (min./ max.) 3.4 Storage and transport Packaging Storage and transport temperature Your instrument was protected by packaging during transport. Its capacity to hande norma oads during transport is assured by a test according to DIN The packaging of standard instruments consists of environment-friendy, recycabe cardboard. In addition, the sensor is provided with a protective cover of cardboard. For specia versions PE foam or PE foi is aso used. Dispose of the packaging materia via speciaised recycing companies. 10 Mounting 4 Mounting 4.1 Genera instructions Switching point Moisture In genera, OPTISWITCH 3100 C can be mounted in any position. The instrument must be mounted in such a way that the vibrating eement is at the height of the requested switching point. Use the recommended cabes (see chapter "Connecting to power suppy") and tighten the cabe gand. You can give your OPTISWITCH 3100 C additiona protection against moisture penetration by eading the connection cabe downward in front of the cabe entry. Rain and condensation water can thus drain off. This appies mainy to mounting outdoors, in areas where moisture is expected (e.g. by ceaning processes) or on cooed or heated vesses. Fig. 2: Measures against moisture penetration Transport Do not hod OPTISWITCH 3100 C on the vibrating eement. Especiay with fange and tube versions, the sensor can be damaged by the weight of the instrument. Remove the protective cover just before mounting. Pressure/Vacuum The process fitting must be seaed if there is gauge or ow pressure in the vesse. Before use, check if the sea materia is resistant against the measured product and the process temperature. The max. permissibe pressure is stated in the "Technica data" in the "Suppement" or on the type abe of the sensor. 10 OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch
Mounting Handing The vibrating eve switch is a measuring instrument and must be treated accordingy. Bending the vibrating eement wi destroy the instrument. Warning: The housing must not be used to screw in the instrument! Appying tightening force on the housing can damage its interna mechanica parts. To screw in, use the hexagon above the thread. 4.2 Mounting instructions Socket Fiing opening The vibrating eement shoud protrude into the vesse to avoid buidup. For that reason, avoid using mounting bosses for fanges and screwed fittings. This appies particuary to use with adhesive products. Mount the instrument in such a way that the tuning fork does not protrude directy into the fiing stream. a. b. 20 Fig. 3: Horizonta mounting a Convex mounting b Concave mounting If such an instaation ocation shoud be necessary, mount a suitabe protective sheet above or in front of the vibrating eement - see iustration a.). OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch 11
Mounting In abrasive soids, mounting according to iustration b. has proven. A spout forms in the concave protective sheet preventing wear of the protective sheet. Horizonta mounting To achieve a very precise switching point, you can insta OPTISWITCH 3100 C horizontay. However, if the switching point can have a toerance of a few centimeters, we recommend mounting OPTISWITCH 3100 C approx. 20 incined to the vesse bottom to avoid buidup. a. b. 20 Fig. 4: Horizonta mounting a Protective sheet b Concave protective sheet for abrasive soids Infowing medium Fows If OPTISWITCH 3100 C is mounted in the fiing stream, unwanted switching signas may be generated. Mount OPTI- SWITCH 3100 C at a ocation in the vesse where no disturbing infuence from e.g. fiing openings, agitators etc. can occur. To minimise fow resistance caused by the tuning fork, OPTISWITCH 3100 C shoud be mounted in such a way that the surfaces of the bades are parae to the product movement. 12 OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch
Mounting 1 2 Fig. 5: Orientation of the tuning fork in case of fow 1 Marking with screwed version 2 Direction of fow Adhesive products In case of horizonta mounting in adhesive products, the surfaces of the tuning fork shoud be vertica in order to reduce buidup on the bades. On the screwed version you wi find a marking on the hexagon. With this, you can check the position of the tuning fork when screwing it in. When the hexagon touches the sea, the thread can be sti turned by approx. haf a turn. This is sufficient to reach the recommended instaation position. With fange versions, the fork is directed to the fange hoes. 1 Baffe protection against faing rocks Fig. 6: Vertica instaation - marking 1 Marking on top with screwed version In appications such as grit chambers or setting basins for coarse sediments, the vibrating eement must be protected against damage with a suitabe baffe. This baffe must be manufactured by you. OPTISWITCH 3100 C - with contactess eectronic switch 13
