5 When operating a fire extinguisher, adopt the P-A-S-S procedure. When fighting a fire, ensure the exit is behind you, in case you are unable to kill the fire, you are still able to escape via the exit behind you. P Pull and twist the pin at the top of the extinguisher, breaking the seal. A Aim the extinguisher hose/nozzle at the base of the fire. S Squeeze the top of the handle to release extinguishing agent. S Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire until the fire is completely extinguished. Once the fire is put out, keep an eye on the area in case of re-ignition. If the fire is not put out within 30 seconds, evacuate immediately. FIRE BLANKET A Fire Blanket is a fire safety apparatus made of fibreglass/ aramid fibres coated with a fire retardant material. It cuts off oxygen supply to a fire thus smothering it. Fire Blanket is used to put up small fire (e.g. kitchen fire, clothing fire). DO NOT use for large fires. For small fire: - Protect yourself, Raise opened blanket to shield your face & hands as you go near fire. - Gentle cover /drop blanket over the fire completely. - Do NOT lift fire blanket for 20 to 30 minutes. Stay around in case fire reignite. For Clothing Fire: - Protect yourself. - Wrap blanket firmly neck down (but not too tightly) over casualty (like a shawl). - No opening to prevent fire reigniting.
6 First Aid First Aid Boxes are located on various locations in the laboratories. The items and stock levels of First Aid boxes are determined by WSHA (First Aid). You may contact your respective Safety Representatives regarding First Aid items. - The number of first aid boxes required depends on the layout of the premises and the number of employees. - First aid boxes should NOT contain any materials other than those required for first aid treatment. E.g. Medication such as Panadol should not be in the First Aid box. First Aid boxes must be kept closed when not in use so as to preserve the integrity of the items in them. - First Aid items are for emergency purposes and should be checked frequently (monthly) to ensure they are fully equipped and items are usable. Any used or expired items must be replaced as soon as possible.
