9 Astrct of Persin Articles Possiility of Producing Compost nd Vermicompost from Sugr Beet Wste in the Sugr Fctory M. Honrvr *, S. Smvt, M. H. Dvoodi, Kh. Krimi c Assistnt Professor of the College of Food Science & Technology, Science nd Reserch Brnch, Islmic Azd University, Tehrn, Irn Acdemic Memer of Wter nd Soil Reserch Center c M. Sc. of Food Science & Technology, Science nd Reserch Brnch, Islmic Azd University, Tehrn, Irn Received: 18 Jnury 2010 Accepted: 2 June 2010 Astrct Introduction: Due to the unfvorle smell of the ccumulted sugr eet wstes in the fctory nd its mixture with the lime wstes, it is costly nd uneconomic to dispose this mixture. This reserch hs een performed to investigte the possiility of producing compost nd vermicompost from the wste in sugr eet fctory in Qzvin. Mterils nd Methods: In order to produce compost, sugr eet wstes were collected. Temperture, moisture nd ertion were controlled during production period. The qulity of compost ws exmined y crrying out series of qulity control tests concerned with ripening degree. Results: The initil results indicted n initil increse in temperture to over 60 o C due to intensive ctivity of microorgnisms. The temperture decresed grdully nd reched the environmentl temperture fter two months. In order to investigte nd control the qulity of the produced compost, ripening degree of compost ws clculted. Compring the experimentl results with the stndrd indices of ripening degree showed tht the product is suitle in terms of temperture vrition, cress, nd percentge of Ammonium-Nitrte. Conclusion: Aprt from the ove findings, the produced vermicompost ws suitle in terms of ripening degree. The produced vermicompost ws superior to the compost produced from sugr eet wstes in terms of chemicl chrcteristics, i.e., Phosphor in vermicompost incresed 3 times s compred to compost while sltiness decresed y 50%. Zinc nd Nitrogen were lso incresed. jftn.sriu.c.ir Keywords: Compost, Orgnic Fertilizer, Ripping Degree of Compost, Sugr Beet Wstes, Vermicompost *Corresponding Author: m-honrvr@hotmil.com
