3 Armstrong Gold Maple Acer x freemanii JFS-KW78 PP25301 Size: 40'H x 12'W Zone 4 Fruit: fastigiate An improvement of Armstrong, this cultivar displays a fuller crown, brighter foliage, and a less leggy habit. Its ascending branch habit creates a tight, fastigiate form, perfect for street tree plantings or for areas with limited space. Photo courtesy of J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. Greencolumn Black Maple Acer nigrum Greencolumn Size: 50'H x 20'W Zone 4 Form: upright, oval Greencolumn is more narrow than the species, with an upright, oval form. Its light green foliage is brilliant in fall, displaying tones of yellow, apricot and orange. The narrow form of this cultivar, and its ability to withstand hot and dry conditions, may make it a better choice than Sugar Maple for street tree use. Also a nice shade tree for residential and commercial properties. Baby Gem Boxwood Buxus microphylla var. japonica Gregem PP21159 Size: 4'H x 4-5'W Zone 5 Form: upright, oval Part of the Garden Debut collection from the Greenleaf Nursery Company, Baby Gem is excellent for borders and hedging. Its foliage is dense, and retains its color throughout the year. Photo courtesy of Greenleaf Nursery Company
4 Lorbergii Siberian Peashrub Caragana arborescens Lorbergii Size: 15'H x 12'W Zone 2 Flower: yellow The linear leaves of this Peashrub give the tree an overall soft, ferny appearance. It is best grown as a standard, and readily adapts to many adverse conditions. Bright yellow flowers add to its ornamental appeal in Spring. First Editions Sapphire Surf Bluebeard Caryopteris x clandonensis Blauer Splatz Size: 2'H x 3'W Zone 5 Flower: deep blue Sapphire Surf is a compact selection. It is a wellbranched shrub which produces an exceptional quantity of inflorescences, providing a truly impressive flower display. Mass plantings in the landscape give a spectacular effect! photo courtesy of Bailey Nurseries First Edition Plants Rosy Teacups Dogwood Cornus kousa x nutallii KN144-2 PP26211 Size: 23'+H x 25'+W Zone 6a Flower: pink Another superior Dogwood from Rutgers University, Rosy Teacups has dark green, glossy foliage that turns red in fall. This very floriferous cultivar displays large, single flowers which are a medium pink, deepening to dark pink toward the edges. Insect and disease resistant. Photo courtesy of Rutgers University
5 Nantucket Blue Bigleaf Hydrangea Hydrangea macrophylla Grenan Size: 4-6'H x 4-6'W Zone 4 Flower: pink/blue Photos courtesy of Greenleaf Nursery Company Part of the Garden Debut collection from the Greenleaf Nursery Company, Hydrangea Nantucket Blue was selected for its vigorous growth habit, prolific bloom and vibrant flower color. It is mildew resistant and flowers on both old and new wood. Flowers will be pink to blue, depending on soil ph. Little Quick Fire Panicle Hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata SMHPLQF PP25136 Size: 3-5'H x 3-5'W Zone 3 Flower: white/pink Little Quick Fire blooms nearly a month earlier than other varieties of Panicle Hydrangea, and its small stature makes it easy to fit into any landscape! Its white flowers mature to dark pink by early fall. Tiny Tuff Stuff Mountain Hydrangea Hydrangea serrata Tiny Tuff Stuff Size: 18-24"H x 18-24"W Zone 5 Flower: pink/blue Tiny Tuff Stuff is aptly named! Its diminutive size will earn it a place in even the smallest gardens. Its bud hardiness and ability to bloom on old and new wood ensures reliable season-long color. Lacecap flowers will be pink to blue, depending on soil ph.
6 White Shield Osage Orange Maclura White Shield Size: 35'H x 35'W Zone 5 Foliage: dark green Form: rounded White Shield is both thornless and fruitless, but retains the rugged durability of the species. It has an upright, spreading habit, becoming rounded with maturity. Its dark green foliage is glossy. Heat and drought tolerant, it withstands limestone soils, high ph, wind and desiccation. This is a good choice for difficult sites. Photo courtesy of J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. Tupelo Tower Blackgum Nyssa sylvatica WFH1 PP22976 Size: 30-40H x 20'W Zone 4 Form: upright Tupelo Tower has a narrow, upright form, making it ideal for areas with limited space. Its foliage is lustrous dark green during the growing season, turning shades of orange in early fall. Photo courtesy of Heritage Seedlings and Liners, Inc Worthington Road Galena Ohio ph fx tf
