Also any trees which have fall colors Our Next Two Meetings: Wednesday, Oct 05, 7:30 pm Wednesday, Nov 02, 7:30 pm Garth Homer Society Auditorium 813 Darwin Avenue, Victoria There will be a panel discussion on moss and ground covers for bonsai. Bring in any unusual ground covers you might have. There will be a raffle of a bonsai tree donated by Tak from Japan Bonsai for all members who renew and pay up there 2006 membership at the next meeting. There will be a lady bringing in some bonsai for sale at the next meeting with 25% of the proceeds going to the club. We will also be holding our usual raffle, please bring donations. November Workshop Cotoneaster from club stock. Workshop to be conducted by Senior Club members. Cost of the workshop is $20., tree included. Depending on the location, we may have up to 15 spaces. 2 Page 2 David Rowe Pine Workshop - October 29th David Rowe has acquired six 20" tall Pines for a workshop. I was led to believe these were Mugo pines... that's what the label says. But my friend Mike, who used to work at Greenthumb Nursery, assures me they are Scots Pine "Beacon Hill" - a dwarf variety with blue green needles and a good trunk and branch structure. One of the six is a dwarf white pine. For anyone interested in this workshop, it will be at The Old School House in Qualicum Beach, on Sat Oct 29th from 12:00 noon til 3:00 pm, approx. If two more people want to work on their existing pine, that is also ok...a maximum of 8 people. The cost of the 3 hour workshop is $40.00 and the trees will be an additional $ For those not doing the workshop, I will also have a sale of trees at my house from 3:00 til 5:00 pm - a variety of trees will be for sale, ranging from $ $45.00 for a small juniper, to $ $ for dwarf Japanese Cedar. Plus some other trees, including Maples, mountain Hemlock, and Larch groupings. We are also thinking of having an early pot luck bbq at our house after the workshop, with us providing the "meat" part. There will be a sign-up sheet at the next meeting (Wed October 5) for those interested in taking the workshop, and in the sale and potluck...david Rowe

3 Page 3 Nikkei Society Japanese Cultural Bazaar Bazaar is being held Saturday October 22nd 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. At the Esquimault Recreation Centre, 527 Fraser. Our club will be hosting a table and will have exhibits, demonstrations and sales, any and all volunteers are most welcome. Craig Cousins is coming!! Since 1990 Craig Coussins has traveled the world teaching his art and although he is a very experienced carver, Craig prefers working with trees rather than power tools. He studies the indigenous species of the country his visits and always works towards developing trees native in species and style of that country. He has worked in South Africa, England, Italy, Ireland, Russia, New Zealand, Belgium, and all over North America. Craig has written fours books including the advanced techniques covered in his latest book Bonsai School. He will be coming to Victoria for a demonstration and workshop in February Stay tuned for more information. Roots by Reiner Goebel (Copied from Spring 2005 ABS Journal) A surface root system worthy of the name nebari should display the following characteristics: The roots should radiate away from the trunk. They should be spaced evenly around the trunk. They should not be one sided. They should not cross each other or the trunk. They should display taper. They should not snake their way into the soil. Seen from the front of the tree, they should not grow directly towards the viewer. They should be in proportion to the width of the trunk. They should grow off the trunk at vastly different heights. On initial styling, any roots deviating from the above should be removed as long as the tree s survival is not jeopardized. Ugly roots can also be removed in stages, that is one this year another one in two year s time.
