He produced a great result from the Juniper supplied and we acquired some good information from him. We will keep you updated on the tree as it gets repotted into a bonsai container at a later stage. The tree will most likely be raffled at some stage to a club member. The workshop participants and observers also benefitted. If there is someone you think the club should be asking to demonstrate for us, please let a committee member know. I recently attended the Japan Cultural day at Mt Coot-tha. Bimer were asked to participate and a few members brought up trees for display and for working on near the Botanic Gardens bonsai house. BSQ also participated, so both Brisbane clubs were presented. We had a lot of public interest and they enjoyed seeing trees actually worked on, as well as the opportunity to ask questions. A big thanks go to the Bimer members who volunteered their time to assist and demonstrate during the day. Hopefully we have raised interest in bonsai and will see new members join. This month we have Geoff Bray from the Gold Coast club talking to us about Wisteria bonsai. Geoff is very experienced with Wisterias, including grafting his own stock to get the different colours. 2 expect we will get some great information from him which will inspire me to look at advancing the Wisteria I have ground growing at the moment to the next level. I have let it grow rampant over the shed and enjoy its flowers during spring (blue form the main grafted plant and white from the cut roots of the under stock that have self-propagated). I hope to see you all there. AG Last Month s Meeting September Activities The deciduous trees should be popping buds and leafing out by now. Trees that are actively growing can be fertilised otherwise if the tree is dormant the food is not taken up. Have a think about removing some branches now before the sap starts flowing full force. Evergreens can be fertilised and treated as normal at this time of year. 3 beat. Try and get on top of weeds before they take hold. Any repotting being done should be protected from the warmer day s sun. Display Table Please remember to bring along a tree, Flowering, for display this month, if you need some feedback or assistance with developing it into a bonsai. Any tree is welcome. An afternoon tea break will be available to pursue advice about your tree. Members are encouraged to share their accumulated knowledge with the newer members. There s also the chance to win an additional lucky door prize for any member who brings in a tree for display. BUS TRIP GOLD COAST NOVEMBER 12TH This year the annual bus trip will be to the Gold Coast and Tweed Bonsai show at Robina. The cost will be $10 plus your entry into the show. After visiting the show there will be the chance for lunch at Robina Fair and then stops at The Defined Garden and Red Dragon bonsai on the way home. Bruce will provide his famous commentary and has asked for chocolates to keep him sustained. There will also be a raffle on the way home. See Paul to book your seats now. DISPLAY TREES FOR 2017 AABC CONVENTION BRISBANE Over the next several months we will be selecting Bonsai for the display. If you have bonsai that you would like to submit for consideration please send a front view photo and description (including species, height and width). Photos just need to give a clear view of the trees. Bimer Club members are eligible for insurance coverage on your bonsai whilst exhibited at the Convention and also in transit to the venue. This is a great opportunity to show off the work of Bimer members, so please have a good look at your trees. 5 Naoki Maeoka-Japanese techniques Notes by Shannon Young- NBPCA For those not lucky enough to attend the presentations of Naoki Maeoka earlier this month during his Australian visit we have been able to obtain notes taken by Shannon Young when Naoki visited Canberra and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia. Bob and Averil were fortunate to catch up with him at Fujikawa Kouka-en in June this year. Hard at work - wire off wire on. General fertiliser programme for all trees: Synthetic slow release fertiliser in never used in the potting media. When fertilising in general he tries use organic fertilisers with a fairly even NPK ratio. Unlike our blends Power feed 14:1.4:9 and Osmocote 8 to 9 month 16:4.8:8.3 Tamahi Organic NPK 5:2:1 Bonsai Fertilizer fertiliser cakes are used and applied or removed when required. They also use liquid fertiliser NPK 6:10:5. Liquid fertiliser is also applied in spring, autumn, after defoliation, decandling and after repotting. 6 -General application ½ strength monthly. -Heavy application ½ strength every second week. General fertiliser calendar: Spring- Organic cakes and liquid not heavy application. Summer- No fertiliser unless the tree is weak. Autumn- Organic cakes and liquid heavy application Winter- Conifers only general liquid application (Sustain) Specific fertiliser program for select trees at specific times: Don t fertilise white pine in spring. Fertilise heavily all weak trees, defoliated or decandled trees. Soak if possible weak trees in a bath of liquid fertiliser for 2-3hrs every second week. Reduced fertiliser in Autumn for improved colour on deciduous trees. General watering comments: Inspect all trees daily for water. On very hot or dry and windy days inspect your trees 3-4 times a day. Decoration gravel on the surface of your trees may cause the tree to stay wet. Japanese maple like dryer conditions. Trident and elm prefer more moisture. Avoid over watering pine (specifically white pine) on extremely hot days as they shut down and do not absorb any water. Water foliage in the summer evenings to prevent pests. General pad development techniques on deciduous bonsai: For refinement, ramification and taper in foliage pads always cut strong growth and leave weaker shoots. Foliage pads resemble a fan shape with some over lapping secondary branches with slight height variation within the pad. Only wire outer branches and clip/grow smaller internal branches. Tertiary branches can also overlap a little as well. Always remove strong upward growing branches in the centre of the foliage pad and replace them with fine delicate branches in the next growing season. It is inevitable that every 5-10 years (depending on age and tree vigour) you will need to do a major structural prune to select more delicate/smaller branches within foliage pads. 7 Naoki demonstrated this technique to Bob and Averil photo taken at Fujikawa Kouka-en June 2016 midsummer in Osaka. Zelkova specific techniques: Full defoliation only once per year on trees is producing strong growth. Partial defoliation on strong areas will help share power throughout the tree. Autumn or mid spring branch prune is best. Cut branches back flush and use cut paste on large and branch glue on small. Let weak area s grow on Trident maple specific techniques: Strong Trident maple can be defoliated fully up to 3 times per year. For more refined trees, mid spring outer leaf defoliation and 2 summer partial defoliations to improve light penetration to inner leaf. Don t touch inner small leaf growth Partial defoliation on strong areas will help share power throughout the tree. Always check if the tree bleeds on cut branches before any pruning Prune early autumn, at bud swell in spring or at repotting Root pruning will reduce bleed Cut branches back flush and use cut paste on large and branch glue on small. 8 Japanese maple specific techniques: Never fully defoliate mature or finished trees. Full defoliation should only be done on young very vigorous trees. Only one mid spring outer leaf defoliation this improves light penetration to inner leaf and improves inner bud and branch health. Tip: prune growth as soon as first set of leaves has developed and remove the sheath with tweezers to promote a shorter first internode. Beech specific techniques: Never defoliate Fine ramification for an older finished tree- Gently pinch growing tip from unopened bud just before it busts. General pruning on a young tree- let the shoots elongate to 4 or 5 leaves before pruning. Black pine needle cutting techniques: Japanese artists regularly cut needles before shows or photography Cut the needles at the desired height and to stop the ends going brown spray foliage 4 or 5 times over the next 4 hours and place the tree in the shade for several days.
