2 Perfect rooting for a strong crop Grodan markets a new slab for the professional rose grower: the Flortop rosa. This advanced slab produced with the Next Generation technology has important advantages, such as improved re-saturation, root establishment, uniformity and steerability. With the introduction of the Flortop rosa Grodan responds to the wishes of rose growers who demand optimum results. WG (vol%) Maximum Minimum Flortop rosa owes its properties to the unique hydrophilic fibre technology and special fibre structure. Re-saturation of the slab has been improved and is faster (see figure) as a result of the new production technology. Distribution of water content and EC is also clearly more even, not only within the slab but also between the slabs (see figure). To realise a vigorous and uniform crop with a strong root system under both dull and sunny conditions, good root establishment, large steerability and uniform distribution of WC and EC are prerequisites. Only then are rose growers assured of maximum results, both qualitatively and quantitatively, season on season.

When WC might have been decreased (too much), it can be quickly levelled up again because of the slab s remarkably large re-saturation capacity. The fibre structure ensures that there will always be enough air in the substrate, so that the grower can always take the crop s needs and the season into account and vary the WC and EC values without a problem. Also after long periods with a low water content, e.g. in winter, it is easy to steer WC back to higher values. There are not only more roots in the substrate, but the roots in the middle and bottom layers of the slab are also of superior quality and colour. Good root establishment is a basic condition for getting a vital plant with a higher resistance to diseases. The improved water distribution will result in a healthier root system especially in crops of moderately rooting cultivars. Uniform distribution of WC and EC The even distribution of WC and EC in the slab from top to bottom ensures that the top layer will still contain enough water even at relatively low water contents while the bottom layer will not be too wet. The roots can thus take up enough water and nutrients everywhere in the slab. Irrespective of the differences in growth between the plants the distribution of WC and EC in Flortop rosa remains more uniform than in other slabs under any condition. WG and EC-distribution
