1 FLORICULTURE Career Development Event 1. This CDE shall consist of four parts having a total score of 1020 points broken down as follows: Judging (200 points): Four classes of 4 samples each to be placed from top to bottom on the basis of quality and condition (from first to fourth place). The four classes shall consist of 1 cut flower, 2 ornamental classes, and a class of corsages or floral arrangements. Cut flowers, potted flowering plants, and potted foliage plants will be used. The cut flower and an ornamental classes will consist of specimens selected from the plant identification list. 1 Practicum (100 points)-the practicums will follow the following sequence: Fresh Flower Bud Vase 2016 Fresh Flower Corsage 2017 Fresh Flower Arrangement 2018 Information and Skills (360 points): 60 objective type questions and specimens for analysis will be selected from the following areas(each question valued at 6 points): A) The greenhouse industry -geographical location -occupations/opportunities -industry scope B) Plant growing structures -types of greenhouses -location and sizing -greenhouse benches -framing materials -glazing materials -other growing structures -control of greenhouse environment C) Growing media -soils; properties and composition -artificial soils D) Cultural operations -sanitizing, sterilizing practices -pinching techniques -disbudding -plant moving -harvesting, storage methods E) Plant science -external plant parts -plant functions -environmental factors of plant growth F) Plant nutrients -elements necessary for plant growth -functions of plant nutrients -watering -fertilizers -fertilizer application G) Plant propagation -seed propagation -asexual propagation H) Potted plant production -azalea -chrysanthemum -poinsettia -bedding plants -gloxinia -kalanchoe -African violet -spring flowering bulbs -foliage plants I) Insect pests of greenhouse crops J) Diseases and weeds of greenhouse crops

2 K) Greenhouse equipment L) Retail Floristry -bow construction -corsage construction -principles of design M) Greenhouse equipment N) Floristry -boutonniere construction -bouquet construction Identification (360 points): Composed of 45 specimens and/or samples. Samples selected for the CDE shall be fresh and observable. All samples should be exhibited for the CDE in their current state of growth. Samples will be selected from each of the following areas (each specimen valued at 8 points): 1. Cut flowers/cut foliages 2. Annual bedding plants 3. Potted greenhouse plants 4. Plant disorders and insects 2. Four members shall constitute a team for this CDE at the State FFA Convention. The top three scores will determine the team score. 3. Official Dress or appropriate FFA attire is required. Refer to Rule 1-A-5 on page Time: Contestants shall receive 45 minutes to complete each part of the CDE. 5. Computer scan sheets will be used for this CDE. Form number will be used. Refer to the appendix for a sample. 6.
