2 THE 40 TH ANNIVERSARY SHOW Show set up at Faddegon s on FRIDAY September 26 at 2-6 PM. If you can help set up call and let Adriano Manocchia ( ) know. Trees may be brought either Friday or Saturday. If you only come on Saturday bring in bonsai from 8 AM to 9 AM ONLY. The nursery is on the south side of Route 7 in Colonie just west of the turnoff for the Albany International Airport. Our show will be in the front of the main display greenhouse just behind the gift area. This is to the left as you enter the nursery shop. Be sure that bonsai and accent plants and stands are clean and in top condition for the show. Be sure to have the correct name for your trees for the display. Iris would appreciate it greatly if you ed or phoned her with your bonsai list now so that proper name tags will be available. The show committee will place the bonsai. THERE IS A NEED FOR BONSAI AT ALL LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT. Bring extra stands to the show if you have them as not all members own stands and we would like a stand or matt under each tree. Members may sell bonsai and bonsai items at the show with the club getting 10% commission on sales. You may bring trees to work on during the show. We will also select 3 bonsai and 3 back up trees to go to MABS during the show. Please wear your MHBS shirt at the show We must provide coverage throughout the show. This year you may also bring a tree or two and your tools so you can work on bonsai during the show. The public enjoys seeing us work. Bring your lunch with you and drinks and perhaps munchies to share. PLEASE to do your part: Print the poster at the end of the newsletter and put it in places that will promote our show. From our President David P: Dear members of the MHBS: The annual club show is scheduled for September 27 and 28 at Faddegon s Nursery with set-up on the 26 th. As many of you know, Pauline will be out of the country at that time. That, in turn, means that her trees (and her stands) will not be available for our show. Which, in its turn, means that: a) Other members of the club will need to display more of their trees or b) We should plan on having a much smaller show than usual. When this was discussed at the July club meeting, those who were there felt that a) was the better option, by far. That being said, those of us who are organizing the show have a felt need to get an idea of who will be displaying trees so we can begin to plan the use of space. To help us, we ask that club members indicate either to Adriano Manocchia or David Payton how many trees you are willing to include in the show and each tree s name (so we can make up identifying signs). Remember, too, that each member is responsible for providing a display stand for his/her trees. We who are organizing the gig would also like to know three additional bits of information: 1. Who can help with set-up on the 26 th in the afternoon, early on the 27 th and take down on the 28 th. 2. Who is willing to be available to staff the show and answer visitors questions on the 27 th and 28 th and what times he/she will be available.

3 3. Who is willing to bring a tree or two to work on during the day for demonstration purposes. Again, we ask that you please share this information with either Adriano or David now. In advance, thanks for all your help.david Payton ANNUAL PICNIC A GREAT SUCCESS MHBS thanks to Adriano and Teresa for hosting the annual picnic. We all enjoyed their beautiful display area for their bonsai and kusomono. The food brought by all the members was fantastic as usual. Thanks also to Dan Moskwa for his donations to the club. We will be adding them to future raffles. September Outdoors Pauline Muth Fertilize only with Potash by this time. Watering decreases, but watch carefully for drying out with fall winds. However trees with fruit on them require a good supply of water to keep their fruit. Remove the fruit before storage later as the fruit will attract bugs and fungi. As leaves fall, I sweep them up and remove them. A dust buster works well for this. Most of the wire is removed. Check all remaining wire to prevent damage from late summer growth. Work on pruning of pines to encourage bud back is started this month. Continue to remove all weeds from pots. Start cleaning pots in anticipation of winter storage. Although storage is months off, it the temperatures are much nicer now than in December. Enjoy the beginnings of fall color at the end of the month. It is time to think about the winter storage area. Many of us use unheated sheds or a garage to store the bonsai. If you are planning on building a pit for winter storage, this is probably the last workable month for the project. We have built a new storage building so I will need to take care this first winter of use. I also stock up on Safer or Concern soaps so I can wash all the trees before taking them into the greenhouse or putting them in winter storage. Fairly locally you can attend the International Bonsai Fall Symposium in Rochester NY this September. Link is in our calendar. Also think about going to the first Naitonal Bonsai Show next month in Rochester. Link also in the calendar. Be sure to take your best trees to our club meeting to show off all your hard work! Time to show off at the club show at the end of this month. September Indoors Frost can come as early as Labor Day here. So the greenhouse is clean and ready for winter. I give away a lot of cuttings that have filled the greenhouse in the summer. As the temperatures drop various bonsai and brought into the greenhouse. All tropicals come in on Labor Day or close there after. All bonsai are washed in a soap solution and rinsed before I bring them in. The tropicals will all lose their leaves in the short days and cooler temperatures. Putting up yellow sticky tabs helps to catch bugs that come in with open vents and doors on warm days. Clean up fallen leaves and fruit. The temperature is set for a minimum of 45 degrees F until December 21 st when it is increased to 50.

4 Light gardens are clean and ready for tropicals and semi-tropicals. Remember to replace old light bulbs just because they still work does not mean they have the same energy out put for your plants. Replace every 6 months of use at least. Semi tropicals can remain outside until their leaves drop and then bring into the greenhouse or light gardens. Good examples in our climate are elms, maples, pomegranates, and hornbeams. They will leaf out in the greenhouse in January or February or under lights in December. Remember to plan to start fertilizing again when the plants begin to leaf. BONSAI HERE AND BEYOND 2008 CHECK OVER THE WORKSHOPS OFFERED IN 2008 AND OR CALL ADRIANO (518) TO REGISTER.
