Light and Plant Growth Experiment Instructions Materials (I will provide everything): 1. Various seed packets 2. Clear plastic drinking cups (2 per student) 3. Potting soil 4. Black construction paper strips 5. Rulers 6. Blank white sticky labels 7. Scotch tape or glue 8. Data observation sheets 9. Experiment graph sheet Go to back table to assemble your experiments Directions: 1. Select a seed packet. 2. Write your name on 4 sticky labels. 3. Write LIGHT under your name on two labels. 4. Write DARK under your name on two labels. 5. Place one LIGHT label on a cup and one DARK label on another cup. 6. Fill each cup half way with soil make sure the levels are about equal. 7. Neatly cut the top off the seed packet Do not discard your seed packet. 8. Equally place 4 seeds along the outside edge of the soil. 9. Moisten the seeds and soil with water. 10. Finish filling the cups almost to the top with soil make sure the levels are about equal. 11. Do not pack the soil tightly make it easy for the sprouts to reach the surface. 12. Moisten again with water. 13. Wrap each cup with a black construction paper strip and tape to secure. 14. Label the outside of the construction wrapped cups just as you did the inside. 15. Place one cup in a sunny area (I will show you where to place them). 16. Place the other cup in the closet. 17. Follow the instructions on the Plant Growth Experiment Title Page to tape or glue your seed packet to this page. 18. Write your hypothesis on what you think the effect of light and no light will have on your plants. 18. Daily record plant growth/changes on your observation sheets. 19. Record the height of your plant once in breaks through the soil on the graph. Once the plants break through the soil, remove all the seedlings except one. You planted extras just to make sure you could get one good plant in each cup. 20. Perform these duties daily for a period of 30 days. 21. At the end of 30 days, record your conclusion. 22. Record if your hypothesis was correct or not. *Once your experiment is set up, you can start on your fantastical plant seed packet and model. Page 6
Title Page Name: Date: Cut remaining edges of empty seed packet (left, right & bottom) Glue front & back of seed packet below EXPERIMENT PURPOSE: Observe & record the effects of light and no light on plants grown from seeds. Seed Packet Front Seed Packet Back Page 7
My Hypothesis Name: Date: Describe the effect you think that the amount of light will have on your 2 plant cups. If you think that the amount light will have no effect that is what you should write. You also need to write down why you think what you think. What is your reasoning? My hypothesis (guess) is The reason I think this is because Page 8

Graph Name: Date: Directions: Measure the height of your plants above the soil daily. Graph these numbers on the graph below. Make sure you graph the LIGHT plant height in one color and the DARK plant height in a different color. Until your plant(s) breaks through the soil, the plant height should be recorded as zero. After 30 days, connect the points of the same color to get a better visual of your results. 10 Plant Height vs. Days Since Planting /Plant Height Above the Soil (Inches) Days Since Planting Page 19
Name: Date: Light and Plant Growth My Conclusion Describe what you learned after collecting and recording data for 30 days. Use the information you have collected and the graph you created to help you form your conclusion. Give the reasons you developed this conclusion. Tell whether your hypothesis was correct or not. My conclusion is I came to this conclusion because My hypothesis (guess) was Page 20
Fantastical Plant Seed Packet Instruction Sheet Name: Date: Design a seed packet for a Fantastical plant that you create from your imagination. Your plant can be anything you can imagine! So dig deep and come up with something spectacular. Use the seed packets I have in the classroom and the one you used to plant your seeds as models. Your final seed packet design should be drawn on an index card. I have these in the room for your use. You can work on this in class and at home. Please read the instructions for the oral presentations before you start designing because in the oral presentation you will need to explain your design. The front must contain: (unlined side of index card) Plant name Picture of your plant Your name The back must contain: (lined side of index card) Brief description of your plant (What are the petals made of? What happens when it blossoms? Does a diamond appear? What does it smell like?) Germination time (time it takes for the seed to break through the soil) Days until it blooms Plant height when fully grown How long it will live after it blooms Best growing conditions: Temperature Amount of water if any (maybe your plant needs a different liquid, like soda, milk, syrup, alcohol, or no liquid) What should it be planted in (soil, ice, glitter, oil, play-doh, etc.) Small USA map to tell when to grow this seed in certain states (I have a link to a map you can resize to fit your packet) You can always include more information! Make your packet card colorful and informative. It needs to be neat and well written. Make sure your parts and pieces connect together well. You can use any of the classroom craft supplies you would like to make your package exciting. Have fun with this project and just let you imagination run wild. Remember this really is a seed of your imagination! You will get a chance to tell your classmates all about your creation in a brief oral report. Page 21
Fantastical Plant Model Instruction Sheet Name: Using your seed packet as a guide, you must construct a model of your fantastical plant. Use any of the crafting materials available in the classroom. Below is an example of how your model should look but larger. Your model should not be any larger than 24 inches without the string. Make sure you decorate both sides because it will be hanging from the ceiling. Once you have all of your pieces, I will help you attach the yarn to connect the pieces. This is just an example, however your model must include your plant s name and your name. Inside the flower pot you should draw what your plant should be planted in, such as ice cubes, eggs, or motor oil. Also you can always include more items and more information, just remember the length requirement. Plant Name Your Name Yarn Page 22
Oral Presentation Instruction Sheet Name: Date: Directions: 1. Your speech must be at least 3 minutes but no longer than 10 minutes. 2. Justify and explain your design. Example: I chose to have my flower open up to reveal a star because I think stars are beautiful. The seeds need to be planted in glitter because stars are glittery and sparkly. The plant should be given gas instead of water because stars are made of gas. The flower of this plant smells like a burning fire because stars are really very large balls of burning gases. The color of petals of my flower will depend on what color glitter is used to plant the seed. The glitter will also determine the color of the star inside. If several different colors of glitter are used, the petals will be swirled with all the different colors you used. This is also true for the color of the star. The flower will always feel slightly warm because stars are hot. This plant will live for millions and millions of years because stars live for millions and millions of years. If you get tired of the plant, just pour water on it because water can put out a fire. This is just an example. I did not include everything, I just wanted you to have an idea of what I will be looking for in your oral report. You must be able to explain why your plant does and looks the way you designed it to look. Be creative but think about the relationships between things. If your seed needs to be planted in milk, make sure there is a reason for this. Page 23
