process Sir Walter DNA Certified There are so many reasons why Sir Walter DNA Certified is Australia s No. Buffalo. Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo Lawn has stood the test of time, proving time and time again that it will go anywhere and grow anywhere; in full sun or shade, in extreme heat, frost or drought. Since 997 there has been over 70 million metres of Sir Walter sold Australia wide that is the equivalent to million aussie yards. It is versatile and resistant to so many factors which cause most other lawns a problem, and which are really no match for Sir Walter. Great in full sun & shade Drought tolerant Low maintenance Weed resistant Salt tolerant Low allergy Disease & fungus resistant Environmentally friendly Very soft Resistant to lawn grub attack AusGAP Certified How do you know it s genuine Sir Walter? Lawn Solutions Australia commenced an extensive DNA testing process with our members to further ensure Sir Walter that is produced and sold by Bunnings is the genuine, high quality turf product which Australians know and trust. Always look for the Sir Walter DNA Certified logo, to be sure you are getting genuine Sir Walter. Hear from Jason Hodges Watch video

process Quick tips Measure area Soil preparation Spreading & leveling Quick tips Determine how many m of turf you require For more information on how to measure your area Remove weeds and vegetation Complete a soil analysis & ph test For more information on how to test your soil Make soil improvement works For more information how to improve your soil Access drainage and levels For more information on leveling off your area Instructional video with Jason Hodges Watch video

process Quick tips Measure area Soil preparation Spreading & leveling Measure area Measuring is reasonably simple, just work out which areas of the yard require turf and then calculate area in square meters. It is always best when ordering to allow an extra 5% to cater for odd-shaped areas and shaping around corners and trees as you will be cutting and shaping your turf to fit. 5 process Quick tips Measure area Soil preparation Spreading & leveling Soil preparation Remove any existing grass and rocks Break up any hard surfaces Identify soil type Identifying the existing soil type is key in preparation it will give you a fair idea of whether you can easily improve the current soil, or if excavation and installation of new soil is needed. Identify if the soil is decompacted so water can drain through if you can t stick a screwdriver or garden fork easily into the soil then you have a problem with compaction. Aeration is a common method of decompacting heavy clay soils. Aeration is simply putting holes into the ground with an aerator or garden fork, allowing air and moisture into the soil to help with drainage and turf root development. Assess soil health Complete a ph test to find out what your base needs to be brought up to a healthy standard for turf. Your ph should be between 6-7. ph below 6 it is considered to be acidic. To raise the ph in acidic soils, you can apply products such as lime and dolomite at recommended application rates. ph above 7 the soil is considered alkaline and can be treated with sulfur based products to successfully lower the ph down to the ideal level. If the soil is beyond correction, you simply need to rearrange or raise the levels of the ground. Excavation of old soil and installing new soil is the best way to achieve a suitable turf base. Allow at least 00mm for new topsoil plus an extra 0-0mm to allow for the height of the Sir Walter. Gypsum is an effective method of alleviating compacted soils. Gypsum is a readily available product that can be spread across the turf base at a rate of -kg per m that will break down clay and decompact the soil. 5 Soil improvement selecting and ordering a base Consult your Bunnings greenlife expert in case any regional problems exist. For the most part a sandy loam is ideal for turf purposes. Your average sandy loam base is composed of 70% sand and 0% soil, however this can vary slightly. The benefits of a sandy loam include: Very light which means it easy to move around and easy to spread and level. Good soil drainage due to the sand component of the base, and it has a less chance of compacting in the long run. If the yard is 00m and allowing for 00mm of depth, you will require 0t of soil.

process Quick tips Measure area Soil preparation Spreading & leveling Spreading & leveling Roughly spread out the soil Whether that is with the bobcat bucket or wheelbarrows and shovels. Finish the level This best done manually using a rake. It can also be done using a bobcat, however will always need a final rake to finish. Always be sure to think about drainage issues when leveling soil and where the water will run to when it rains. Allow 0-0mm depth for new Sir Walter turf, especially when matching your lawn up to the height of existing surfaces. Lightly compact This ensures the turf does not sink or become uneven. If you have a bobcat or machine leveling the area, its weight will usually take care of this. If leveling by hand, the use of a light roller can do the trick.

process Quick tips Install steps Quick tips of turf should be done the same day as delivery Do not lay turf on a very hot day Ensure soil surface is moist but not too wet Lightly rake a starter fertiliser on the top layer of soil prior to laying turf (apply as per the rates and instructions on the packaging) For more detailed steps on how to lay turf: Install Steps Instructional video with Jason Hodges Watch video

process Quick tips Install steps Install steps 5 Start laying Start laying from the bottom of any sloped areas and always use full rolls or slabs around the edges. Always lay across the slopes. Stagger the joints Stagger the joints (like brickwork) so they don t line up. This helps to prevent drying out and soil erosion. Butt the turf closely together and avoid gaps. Cut the turf Avoid using small pieces as these will dry out quickly. Do not stretch the turf. Cut the turf with a sharp knife or hedging shears. Water in Water the turf as soon as it is laid. For large areas, set up a sprinkler whilst the remainder of the laying takes place. Make sure each section gets at least 0mins worth of water Roll your lawn If you have a roller it is a good idea to roll the lawn once you have watered to ensure root contact with the soil, however this isn t a necessity.

process Quick tips Watering Mowing Fertilising Other Quick tips Keep traffic to a minimum for the first 6 weeks after installation Water your lawn every day for the first weeks after installation For more information on watering Wait until turf is well established before mowing For more information on mowing Wait at least 6 weeks after installation prior to commencing a scheduled fertilising program For more information on fertilising

process Quick tips Watering Mowing Fertilising Other Watering Watering is highly important in the initial stage of establishing lawn. Water your lawn everyday for the next weeks. Morning and afternoon is the best time to water, as it won t evaporate quickly in the heat. Approx 0 minutes per day. Note: If the lawn has been installed in an excessively hot period you may need to double that amount. After weeks, reduce the amount you are watering to - times per week. Always remember however, with a young lawn you need to keep an eye on the weather. Keep up the watering if experiencing excessive hot days. However if receiving regular rainfall, reduce watering accordingly. Monitor to ensure the lawn doesn t dry out.

process Quick tips Watering Mowing Fertilising Other Mowing Wait until turf is well established before mowing. Approx. weeks after installation depending on the time of the year. Always mow Sir Walter DNA Certified on a high setting, especially whilst the lawn is still young. A soft leaf buffalo turf like Sir Walter does not want to be scalped, or mown low as other varieties may require. Approx. 0-0mm is a good height to mow Sir Walter. You can mow Sir Walter DNA Certified with both cylinder and mulching mowers. Keep mower blades sharp, and maintained regularly to prevent causing lawn damage. Consistent mowing is also necessary to ensure thatch does not build up in the lawn during high growth periods of the year.

process Quick tips Watering Mowing Fertilising Other Fertilising Wait 6 weeks after installation before you start fertilising. A regular fertilising schedule will help keep a Sir Walter DNA Certified lawn in peak condition throughout the year, and enable it to be better equipped to deal with stress, fighting off disease and the emergence of weeds. For a Sir Walter lawn use a high nitrogen granular fertiliser as it is easy to spread, non-toxic and will give your lawn the nutrients it requires to stay healthy. Always be sure to follow the instructions on the fertiliser label and water in well after application. A Sir Walter lawn should receive at least applications of fertiliser per year. You can fertilise at a minimum of 6 week intervals, but generally you can achieve a healthy lawn fertilising at crucial times during the year: The start of spring, around Christmas time and again at Easter. Avoid fertilising during the cooler months if you are located in parts of Australia where Sir Walter goes dormant. It will not have any effect on the growth of your lawn, and can encourage winter-active weeds to emerge as a Sir Walter lawn is more prone to weed infestation in the cooler months.

process Quick tips Watering Mowing Fertilising Other Other common maintenance practices Sir Walter lawns can require different types of maintenance throughout the seasons depending on the situation. Practices such as dethatching, aerating and top-dressing are all common and can greatly assist a lawn in dealing with common issues. These maintenance practices are best performed in the warmer months when the lawn is still growing, and are only required if necessary. Before attempting any of the above, contact your local Lawn Solutions Australia member to ensure you have the correct tools and knowledge for the job to be completed correctly.
