3 How is it used? This information + Form A information is used to forecast SB Production. Form E is used at the end of the season as well. Data from all Objective Yield States are combined to forecast the US. 4 Data Entry Procedure Fill out the form in the field on paper Submit through CAPI/MOST as soon as you are able to (same day is expectation) The exception to same day rule is when harvesting. If harvested outside of survey period, then wait until survey opens Hold on to paper form so that it can be used to: Clarify any errors that come up Clarify any mismatches/anomalies the next month

8 Unit Location Code Overview 1st visit to layout unit = Code 1 take row space measurements Unit relocate* this month = Code 2 take row space measurements Sample unit laid out previously = Code 3 * relocate does not mean that you found a previously laid out unit. It means you had to re-layout the unit, because you could not find the original unit.

9 Row Space Measurements The forecast is expanded to a per acre basis with row space measurements Use 50ft. tape provided - units are in 10ths of feet Not feet and inches At dowel stick, Measure across 1st row space working in buffer zone ƒ not to damage plants in unit

10 Row Space 1 row space - anchor the tape measure at the center of plants in row 1 to the center of plants in row 2. 4 row space - measure from the center of plants in row 1 to the center of plants in row 5.

13 Row Space - Troubleshooting If not enough remaining rows in field to get the 4 row space measurement ƒ measure from center of Row 2 in the direction of Row 1 across 4 row spaces Row spacing of Irregular Planting: take the measurements the same way ƒ 4 row measurements = sum of 2 narrow middles and 2 wide middles

15 Counts Within 3 Foot Area Use hand counter for all counts Each month, always count the # of plants per row Count all plants including dead ones Physically touch the base of each plant Plants in Row 1 middle get counted in R1 Plants in Row 2 middle get counted in R2

16 Maturity of Plants Stage of maturity for each unit must be determined separately Undecided on maturity stage, classify the unit in the lower stage of maturity

17 6 Inch Section Item 6 No plants present, enter dashes (-) for items 6 thru 10 In each unit, complete all items for Row 1 before starting on Row 2 Item 6 count every plant regardless if plant is dead or has no fruit

18 Item 7 - Node 6 Inch Section Item 7 a point at which subsidiary parts originate or center a point on a stem at which a leaf or leaves are inserted. At each node, there is a cluster of pods (blooms or dried flowers), a leaf or a lateral branch off the main stem for each node that is not barren.

Count the number of nodes on main stem above ground on all plants, (not below or at ground level) including dead plants Must be at least 1 node per plant Add one node for growing tip Rare case - if main stem forks and forms 2 main stems, treat both as the main stem (note)

20 6 Inch Section Item 8 Item 8 For OY purposes: branches which bear blooms, dried flowers, or pods are called lateral branches ƒ Lateral Branches must have at least one leaf or scar where a leaf was attached at least one node at least one bloom or pod

22 6 Inch Section Items 9 & 10 Item 9 Number of blooms, dried flowers, and pods on all parts of all plants - on lateral branches and on main stem Item 10 Number of pods with beans - pods with 1 or more beans definitely forming You should see & feel bulges in the pod ƒ bean development If in doubt if beans started to form, go outside the unit and check pods of similar size to see whether beans are forming

26 Status Code Status codes There are 13 possible codes, listed in the interviewer s manual (page 708) Common ones 1 = complete (filled out, unharvested) 4 = enumerator harvested 8 = innacessible Status code must be entered in order to submit the Form-B Separate status codes for each unit
