Acers with striking autumn colours Larger Trees for Wet Soils Acer x freemanii 'Autumn Blaze' A Striking Maple tree One of the most superb Acers for rich autumn colour. A vigorous cross between red and silver maple. Makes a broadly pyramidal with reliable red autumn colour Fast and easy in most soils and situations including very exposed. Autumn Blaze is very adaptable to a wide range of climate and soil conditions. It tolerates clay soil, and will withstand wet soil conditions and drought. Height 10-16m We can supply a large range of other Acers, including maples with striking foliage. Please contact us for a separate e mail compilation.

Acer Platanoides Crimson King This handsome Acer, sometimes known as The Norway maple, is a fast-growing tree. Although it can eventually develop into quite a large tree it can be easily pruned to confine its spread for many years producing a rounded crown. The'Crimson King' foliage is quite dramatic, dark reddish brown when young, becoming crimson purple for the rest of the year. It produces conspicuous deep yellow flowers, tinged with red, gathered in large clusters which decorate the tree before the leaves appear. This species hardy and is robust enough to be grown in exposed positions and can even be used as a windbreak. It grows well in urban settings because it is pollution tolerant. It can be grown in full sun or partial shade and very adaptable to different soil types from well drained light soils to Boggy conditions. In ideal unrestricted conditions Height: 25m ; Spread: 18m

Alnus glutinosa Alder Its natural habitat is boggy land and river banks, however it is also very good for urban plantings as it thrives in all soils and tolerates air pollution. Available as both multi-stemmed and single stem, being a native tree, it is a wonderful host to a wide range of wildlife. It is a very useful variety to plant where the ground is liable to flood and survives many weeks with its roots underwater. There was a scare about Alder being susceptible to Phytophthora along water courses up and down the country but this was highly overstated and Alnus glutinosa remains a vital inclusion to any native planting mix. Mature height: 15-20

Betula nigra ( River Birch) Also known as the Red Birch, this is one of the very best trees for wet soils. A medium sized tree makes a great show with its shaggy, flaking, cinnamon / orange bark. Mature trees are truly statuesque and broadly pyramidal in form. Foliage is soft green and diamond shaped. Its common name of River Birch is misleading as we have seen this tree thriving in arid London tree pits once established. It can tolerate extreme heat in the summer, thriving in Florida as well as Kentucky in the States, so this could become a good choice for the South East of the UK as temperatures continue to break records during the summer months. Available as both a standard tree and as a multi stem. Mature height: 15-20m

Carpinus betulus Fastigiata (Fastigiate Hornbeam.) This tree is a variety of the common Hornbeam species. This handsome tree was introduced about a century ago and has been extensively planted in streets and parks. Neater and denser than the simple species, it grows quite fast while young, producing a neat formal shape, almost triangular in silhouette. The leaves are brighter and shinier than the species, and turn rich yellow and orange shades in autumn, often remaining on young trees all winter before falling. A specimen tree that is useful in urban settings and looks superb in row. The fastigiated shape is prevents an uncontrolled spread. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). Height and spread : 25 x 20 meters

Eucalyptus glaucescens Preferred over the standard Eucalyptus gunneii for a number of reasons, including its medium height (15 meters, compared with the enormous size of E. gunneii. Juvenile stem/trunk is a very attractive blue-grey bloom. The bark of the mature tree is dark gray on the lower trunk and sheds in ribbons, smooth and green-gray above. Leaves are slightly glaucous.* Distinguished from other related species by its larger, cylindrical, glaucous fruits. It branches fairly well and has an attractive scent. The foliage on this species is quite attractive and the shedding bark is an asset as well. *(The term glaucous describes the "bluegreen foliage with a white coating on the leaves.") Culture: Sun, acid ph soils, clay loam, loam or sandy loam Uses: Excellent ornamental, provides shade, fragrant foliage. Height 15m

Fraxinus excelsior Ash The large, vigorous ash tree is deciduous and thrives best on moist, base-rich soils. It is fast growing and long-lived. Older ash trees are recognisable by their downward curving twigs and branches. The foliage is a distinctive arrangement of pinnate, oval leaves. The twigs are a smooth grey-green, with fat black buds in winter and spring. The purplish flowers appear before the leaves. The tree is wind-pollinated in April and May. The winged seeds or 'ash keys' are borne in clusters in summer and autumn. It is a big tree which needs the space of a large garden. Height : 35-40m

Liquidamber styraciflua (Sweet gum tree) The Autumn foliage colours of sweet gum are superb. The leaves are lustrous green all summer, they change through shades of yellow and orange then finally purple and crimson. The weather has to be just right for a really good display in Britain. The leaves are 5-7 lobed like maple except they are alternate not opposite. The toothed lobes radiate like a star from the base of the leaf blade. Seed capsules, which are superficially like London plane, are globular inflorescences suspended on a thin flexible peduncle. As this species prefers sheltered conditions it is best planted in the company of other small to medium sized trees. in nature it thrives with red oak, maple and tulip trees. It grows best in moist, acidic loam or clay soil, and tolerates poor drainage. Height :15-20 m

Platanus x hispanica London Plane - (or P. x acerifolia or P.hybrida) This majestic ornamental tree is planted in many cities and towns to enhance streets and parks where it is well suited, because it survive the tough polluted conditions. The fact that the bark renews itself, by peeling off in plates, aids the tree's resistance to airborne pollution, because this prevents the pores from getting clogged up. It is a particularly characteristic tree of London, where it contributes enormously to green up the urban landscape. The London Plane is a tall handsome tree with unusual bark, which peels off in large plates revealing patches of creamy white; It has deeply palmately lobed leaves and spiky globular fruits, which hang in threes or fours on a single stalk Grows well in most soils and tolerates heavy wet soils Mature specimens reach metres.

Populus tremula ( Aspen) ((Aspen) Fast growing deciduous tree. An uncommon form of narrow upright habit. Late into leaf. Foliage turns clear butter-yellow in autumn. Leaves chatter in the wind. Looks great in a row or avenue Tolerant of windy sites. Any soil including wet soils but not shallow chalk. Height 10-12m For further guidance or a quote, please call r complete a request form from our home page,
