1 PENN JERSEY DISTRICT CONVENTION & ROSE SHOW RULES HORTICULTURAL DIVISION 1. Registration for the Penn-Jersey Convention is required for all exhibitors entering competition. Membership in a Rose Society is not required. Your registration number (on your registration packet) is your exhibitor s number. A couple exhibiting as a team will be considered one exhibitor. 2. Entries will be received between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Wyndham Gettysburg.. No entries will be accepted after 10:00 a.m. Judging will begin at 10:15 a.m. Only Judges, Show Committee and others assisting with the judging will be permitted in the Show Room after 10:00 a.m. and during judging. 3. All entries must be shown in the proper container correctly named, classified and tagged with an entry tag bearing the variety name, class number, exhibitor s name, and registration number. This information is required on both top and bottom sections of the tag. Tags will be available in set up area. Misnamed, misplaced or unlabeled entries will be disqualified. Please use standard tags for all challenge classes including miniature challenge classes. Use small tags for all other miniature entries. 4. Judging of the Horticulture Section will be carried out by ARS accredited and apprentice judges. The American Rose Society Rules on exhibiting and judging will be followed. Judges may make or withhold awards as in their opinion the entry merits. The decision of the judges is final. A blue ribbon is required for a trophy. 5. The Penn Jersey District and the Wyndham Gettysburg will exercise due caution in safeguarding exhibits. They cannot be held responsible for any damage to or loss of any exhibitor s equipment or supplies. 6. Entries must be entered using the approved ARS exhibition names as listed in the following: online Modern Roses database, Modern Roses12, Official List of Approved Exhibition Names, Handbook for Selecting Roses, and recent registration on the ARS website. The online Modern Roses database is the most up-to-date reference and will take precedence over the other references. If a variety is not listed in any of the above official ARS sources, the Combined Rose List may be used as a reference. 7. The following definitions apply to this schedule. Exhibition stage is the stage at which a bloom is at the most perfect phase of possible beauty. The exhibition stage of a bloom depends on the number of petals that it has. For many-petaled blooms the exhibition stage bloom shows classic hybrid tea form: a bloom that is gracefully shaped with the petals symmetrically arranged in an attractive circular outline tending to a high center. For single and semi-double blooms the exhibition stage bloom is fully open yet still fresh with bright fresh stamens. A spray is a group of florets containing two or more blooms on one main or lateral stem. A large rose is a bloom
2 of any class of rose except miniature and miniflora. A single bloom is a bloom of any rose having 4 to 8 petals and/or a bloom of a rose classed as a single by the American Rose Society. 8. All specimens must have been grown outdoors by the exhibitor. Any specimen may have unwanted side growth, side buds and/or spent blooms removed to improve its appearance. Presence of a foreign substance (leaf polish, etc.) on bloom, stem or foliage will disqualify the specimen. 9. All containers are supplied, unless otherwise noted. All vases, boxes, palettes etc. are on a first come first serve basis. Use of any transparent material to position a specimen in a container is permitted and should be provided by the exhibitor. This wedge should not extend above the top of the container. 10. Only one entry per exhibitor is permitted in the Penn Jersey Challenge Classes and the Section E Challenge Classes. Multiple entries are permitted in all other classes as long as each entry is a different named variety. 11. All entries must remain in place until the close of the show which will be after the Saturday banquet events. Exhibitors desiring to pick up their roses and ribbons when the show closes will be permitted to do so then. Major awards will be presented at the Saturday Banquet. Other awards will be presented in the Show Room at 4:00 p.m. HORTICULTURE DIVISION The Horace McFarland, Ralph Moore, Griffith Buck and J. Benjamin Williams classes are open only to current American Rose Society members who are Penn-Jersey District members. All other classes open to all exhibitors registered at the convention.
