1 Plants There are many different types of plants. There are grasses, flowers, vegetables, and trees. All plants are living things. This means they need certain things to live and grow. They need water. They also need soil, air, and sunlight.

2 Seeds Plants also grow seeds that will grow to become new plants. There are many kinds of seeds. Just like plants, all seeds do not look the same. Have you ever eaten a watermelon? You may remember seeing the black seeds on the inside! You may have also eaten an apple and noticed the small, brown seeds in the middle. Each plant has seeds that grow the same kind of plant. An apple seed can only grow apple trees! Did You Know? God created plants on the 3 rd day of creation. You can read more about this in Genesis 1:11-13!

3 Roots Although you cannot see them, roots are very important to a plant. When we want a plant to grow we must take good care of the roots. Think About It: There are many kinds of plants we eat. Depending on the plant, we may eat the fruit, the stem, or even the root! Name some plants you eat. Decide if you eat the root, stem, or fruit.

4 Flowers make seeds for the plants. Not all plants will have flowers. Stems hold up the plant. They move the nutrients, food, and water through the plant. Leaves use sunlight, air, and the nutrients from the soil to make food for the plant. Roots hold the plant into the ground. They also take in water and nutrients from the soil.

5 Weeds Sometimes we may want to get rid of grass or weeds that make it harder for our flowers or vegetables to grow. Weeds are unwanted plants that steal the things our plants need to grow. In this case, we might want to pull the weeds. If the weeds are not pulled, they may steal space, nutrients, and cause our plants to die. When pulling up the weeds, it is important to get the root out. Otherwise, the weeds will grow right back! Pulling weeds in garden often reminds me of sin. You may have learned that sin is the bad things we do. Sin can also be attitudes that are displeasing to God. The Bible says that we have all fallen short of the glory of God. What does that mean? It means no one is perfect. We have all made choices to do the

6 wrong thing at times. Maybe you disobeyed your Mom or Dad. Maybe you chose to leave someone out just because the other kids were doing it. Sometimes we might not even understand why we do things when we know we shouldn t do them. The Bible says the punishment for sin is eternal separation from God. When we realize this, we often want to try really hard to be good and stop sinning! It is good to want to do the right thing, but changing our actions is like pulling off the top of the weed and leaving the root. We may look good to others, but the root of sin is still there. Our heart is the same even though we are doing something different. We did not solve the root of the problem! None of us can be perfect, so no one can fix this by himself. While that sounds like really bad news, there is good news too! Even before we wanted to do the right thing, God loved us so much He made a way for us to be with Him forever. He sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins. Since Jesus already took the punishment for our sins, trusting Him gives us a way to be forgiven for them! Jesus also promises to give us the power to live a life that pleases God. Jesus doesn t just change our actions. He changes our heart. This means Jesus can get to the root of our problem!

7 When we trust Jesus and ask Him to get rid of the root of our sin problem He will help us and never leave us. He can make our life into something much more beautiful.
