Hope you all had a wonderful summer and that you all tried to stay as cool as possible. I would say that our orchids probably enjoyed the humidity!! Meeting The speaker for our September meeting will be Gilberto Arrieche and his talk will be on Mormodes. Gilberto Arrieche was born in Valencia, Venezuela. He came to Canada with his wife and son 16 years ago. Here they not only became Canadians but also they had 3 daughters. He has been growing orchids since childhood mainly Cattleya, Vandaceous and Catasetinae. Around 32 years ago, he joined the Venezuelan Orchid Committee that was part of the Venezuelan Society of Natural Sciences. He was trained and became an Accredited Orchid Judge under the Venezuelan Orchid Judging System and a

3 part of the Board of the Venezuelan Orchid Society. He has visited many natural habitats in order to learn about the conditions and status of conservation of different species. He was invited to Judge and represented Venezuela at the Japan Orchid Grand Prix in Tokyo in When he came to Canada in 2002, he joined the AOS Toronto Judging Centre and the training program to become an Orchid Judge under the AOS system. He is an Accredited Judge and has been studying orchids focusing in the Genus Mormodes that is one of his biggest passions. He has been concentrated in the study and research on all the species of the Genus Mormodes for over 15 years. He is writing a Monograph on this Genus trying to clarify the many taxonomical errors that have been appearing since it was created. He also grows an important collection of species of Mormodes and is committed to the propagation and conservation of them, both in their natural habitats and ex-situ. Please join us for what will be a knowledgeable and interesting talk by Gilberto. Picnic The Executive would like to thank Fred and Kathy Wilkinson for hosting our annual picnic again this year. A good time was had by all the members and Fred and Kathy were again very gracious hosts. A thank you to all the members that brought a pot luck dish also. Thanks, everyone! Coos Show The Central Ontario Orchid Show will be held on the weekend of September 22 nd. & 23 rd. Ted and Charlene will be setting up our Society display for the show. If you have any plants that you can send with Ted and Charlene, please give them a call at Ted s e- mail is kretzorc@hotmail.com Ted would like to have your plants by September 19 th. Cloud s Open House Cloud s Orchids will hold their Open House on September 22 & 23, 11 am. to 4 pm. The workshop is on Phragmipediums and will be held on the Saturday only at noon. Hospitality This is the reminder to Peter Van Loon and Charlene Quevillon that they signed up to bring the goodies for the meeting. Thanks, Peter and Charlene. COC Volunteers The Canadian Orcid Congress needs volunteers. I have attached two documents if anyone is interested. The COOS Orchid Show and Sale Saturday, Sept 22, 2018 from 11:00am to 5:00pm Sunday, Sept 23, 2018 from 10:00am to 4:00pm Cambridge Hespeler Arena, 640 Ellis Road, Cambridge, ON N3C 1A1

4 Neofinetia Care of Neofinetia falcata ( Furan ), the Japanese Wind Orchid Neofinetias prefer medium to low light levels, from foot-candles. If you are growing under fluorescent lights, keep the plants about 8? (20 cm) from the tubes. Under high-intensity lamps, grow approximately 4' (1.2 m) from the fixture. This plant can be grown on windowsills, given a north, east, south, or west exposure. Plants may be grown outdoors in the summer with filtered sunlight. Temperature This plant can tolerate a wide range of temperatures from degrees F. While some growers report leaving their fukiran out in freezing temperatures, I found that was destructive to many of my plants, so I do not suggest doing that. In summer, fukiran enjoy being grown outdoors when possible as that increases air circulation and temperature fluctuation. Humidity Humidity should be kept above 40%. Use humidity trays or a small room humidifier when growing on windowsills in a dry house. Water & Fertilizer Use clean water, such as rainwater, spring water, or reverse osmosis water if possible. Never use artificially softened water on any plants. Let the plants dry out between watering; the faster your plants alternate between wet and dry, the better your roots will grow. Use ample water in spring and summer while the plants are in active growth and in flower, reducing quantities during cooler winter days. Use a balanced fertilizer year-round, preferably urea-free. If using rain, spring, or reverse osmosis water, add some municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. I have begun top dressing my plants with oyster shell for added calcium to prevent center leaf rot. Fertilize very lightly every other watering during the growing season, once a month during the winter rest period should do.

5 Flowering Neofinetias bloom once a year, typically from spring through fall. The inflorescence may have 3-9 flowers. Most forms have white flowers with a long nectary spur. They will last 2-4 weeks and are extremely fragrant, especially at night. There are also pink-, green-, and yellow-colored forms, and flowers with additional and missing floral parts. Repotting Repotting is typically done in the spring and early summer every year when potted in moss. Any type of pot is acceptable as long as the plants dry out in 1-4 days, preferably. Fukiran are traditionally grown in high-quality sphagnum moss; however, people successfully grow them in every possible growing medium imaginable. To pot in moss, place the root ball over a small amount of moss or a foam peanut. Wrap the root ball loosely but securely in sphagnum moss so that the plant does not wobble. Keep the top half of the plant higher than the rim of the pot if you want a more traditional look, and use longer strands of moss to secure the moss ball neatly. Plants may also be mounted on cork or tree fern plaques. You can mount the plants with a little sphagnum to help keep them moist. If kept humid, some growers plant Neofinetias on rocks with live moss.
