Seasonal Greenhouse Growing One of the most important decisions while planning your future greenhouse is choosing what plants to grow and what time of year to grow them. These factors will help determine which type of greenhouse will best meet your needs. Remember, each greenhouse and grower is unique. Season Extension Non-thermal Aluminum with Monolithic Glazing This system is ideal for spring and fall gardening, when heating and cooling are not a concern. A non-thermal greenhouse is suitable for a hobby gardener who uses the structure primarily to extend the start or end of the growing season four to eight weeks, depending on location. Gardeners can start seeds in the greenhouse during spring (grow lights can be supplied by Solar) and transplant the seedlings outdoors after the frost free date passes. Fall bulbs such as tulips and daffodils can be forced into early blooms in these structures. The greenhouse can overwinter dormant plants during their off seasons. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers earth anchors and aluminum sill frames to secure small greenhouses. A foundation may not be required if the greenhouse is less than 200 square feet. Please check your local code. Three Season Non-thermal Aluminum with Insulated Glazing This greenhouse system provides more insulation and a longer growing season than the Season Extension style greenhouse. Seeds can be started in early spring to later transplant in an outdoor garden. The greenhouse usually remains dormant during the summer because there is no cooling system. You can start cool weather crops such as kale and lettuce in the fall that can be harvested throughout the winter. It can also be used to overwinter tender plants and bulbs. There is typically no heating system in the greenhouse, but the insulated glazing will retain passive solar heat from the sun. This alone can provide sufficient temperatures for hardy plants in most locations. Temperatures are controlled by ventilation using doors, windows, and ridge vents. Four Season/Year Round Growing Thermally Enhanced Aluminum & Insulated Glazing This greenhouse is used for growing plants year round and is suitable for extreme heat or cold. Energy efficiency is greatly improved and allows temperature, humidity, and lighting to be properly controlled. These greenhouses can sustain vegetation through a heat wave or snowstorm. Using the correct accessories will allow any plant to grow in this greenhouse, including bedding plants, orchids, and citrus trees. Outside temperatures and precipitation have little effect on plants in this environment. Fruits and vegetables can be nurtured from seeds, planted in raised beds, and harvested in the midst of a blizzard. 3

Functional Greenhouse Types Hobby Hobby greenhouses are perfect for enthusiasts whose collection has outgrown their window sill, but are not ready for a sizable structure. These greenhouses are designed to meet the needs of entry level gardeners. While 300 plants would overwhelm this type of greenhouse, it is perfect for the gardener who wishes to start a few trays of seedlings in the spring or overwinter potted deck plants. Hobby greenhouses typically feature simple configurations and only include a door, windows, roof ventilation, and possibly a greenhouse bench. These structures are typically not equipped with motorized accessories. Propagation A propagation greenhouse is a perfect solution for gardeners who usually have plant trays occupying every household window. The addition of a propagation greenhouse with adequate bench space and a potting area can lead to a flourishing summer garden. Temperature, water, and sunlight can easily be monitored and controlled for the cultivation of a variety of seeds. You can harden the plants in preparation for outdoor transplant at the end of spring. Our greenhouse experts can work with you to make the appropriate accessory selections. Commercial Commercial greenhouses are designed to generate revenue and are tailored to fit specific business needs. They are commonly employed by florists, restaurants, grocery stores, and wineries. These greenhouses are typically used to grow flowers and vegetables, as dining space, or as product display areas. A business s requirements determine the design of commercial greenhouses. Styles range from decorative to contemporary, and structures and floor plans are designed to suit specific needs. Fans and humidifiers are beneficial in working greenhouses. If guests utilize the space, drip and shading systems can be installed to establish an ideal environment that for plants and people. 4

Functional Greenhouse Types Research Research greenhouses are primarily used in agricultural extension departments, universities, medical research facilities, biotechnology labs, and commercial agricultural research. They allow for meticulous control over propagation, growth, and the environmental conditions needed for precise experimentation. Multiple zones can be incorporated into the greenhouse, allowing separate research projects in each room. Cross contamination is reduced by incorporating independent zones, and each zone can maintain specific growing conditions and control systems. Temperature, lighting, nutrients, shading, water, and air circulation can be controlled and monitored. Computer monitoring and cell phone updates are available with an environmental control system. Educational Educational greenhouses are typically found on college and university campuses. Many high schools and even primary schools have begun constructing greenhouses as popularity grows. Greenhouses provide students a unique opportunity to study horticulture first hand. Universities often conduct studies on plant growth, pesticides, and genetics, while vocational schools may propagate plants for landscaping course work. Elementary schools often utilize the greenhouse to expose students to seeding plants and butterfly raising. Most schools choose to implement an environmental control system, so plants can receive proper care through automated processes, which allows educators to focus on the lesson rather than the greenhouse and plant maintenance. Institutional Institutional greenhouses are often used by both private and public entities, such as clubs, foundations, and retirement communities. Retirement community residents can benefit greatly from the addition of a greenhouse, because gardening is seen as a low impact solution to the elderly s need for physical activity. Studies have also shown that exposure to the sun s rays can provide health benefits. A greenhouse allows residents to be exposed to sunlight and the beauty of nature while still being protected from the outside elements. Depending upon your application, Solar can work with you to ensure safety concerns are addressed and building codes are carefully considered. 5

Functional Greenhouse Types Dual Function: Plants and People A dual function greenhouse is dedicated to both plants and people. In a dual function greenhouse, growing areas can line the walls or groupings can be arranged in to reserve space for other activities. Plant stands and vertical growing, like plants hung from a ring and collar, can maximize growing areas. The greenhouse may incorporate space for entertaining complete with a sitting area and table. The gardener may also use the room for various leisure activities and is only limited by their imagination. A sitting area provides the ability to enjoy their investment, especially the beauty of flowers and fruits produced by their plants. The growing space and people space can be proportioned to fulfill the needs of the owner. Urban Urban gardening has become popular in the horticultural world. Gardeners are revitalizing abandoned lots, growing vegetables on balconies, and converting small backyards into flower beds. Many people believe greenhouses require a large plot of land, but this is not the case. Urban greenhouses are smaller, well-suited to city spaces, and can produce vast quantities of plants in a controlled, protected environment. Greenhouse locations can include small parks, yards, terraces, balconies, and rooftops. Solar designs urban greenhouse interiors to maximize available space, and provide ways to create vertical growing space when floor space is limited. Benches can be tiered, trellises can be installed, and shaded areas underneath benches are especially useful for plants with low light requirements. Solar offers metal trellises that can be run from floor to ceiling and are useful for climbing plants, such as cardinal vines, vining beans, and honeysuckle. Another suggestion to maximize your growing area is the addition of plant hangers. Even in situations with very limited space, Solar Innovations, Inc. can design a highly productive urban greenhouse. 6

Functional Greenhouse Types Garden Windows Garden windows are similar to small scale greenhouses. They are the perfect solution when space is so limited that there is no site suitable for a full greenhouse. Each window s size is determined by the customer s need. Solar Innovations, Inc. can custom manufacture any size and shape to fit. These windows are often a reasonable alternative in residential areas where communities do not allow greenhouses. Raising plants in a garden window is a more economical option if the gardener does not have enough plants for a greenhouse, yet too many for the window sills. The garden window is designed to incorporate ridge vents and operable windows for air circulation and ventilation. Additional heating and cooling is provided by the home s existing systems. Garden windows can be much larger than the term suggests. A walk-in garden window can be separated from the home by a door so you are physically able to step inside the unit. Once inside, shelves surround you on three sides. Many gardeners grow several types of plants by adjusting the shelves to accommodate specific plant types. This option is an ideal solution for a gardener who has a small collection of plants. 7

Functional Greenhouse Types Atrium Atrium greenhouses are a blend of traditional construction and greenhouse design, originating in ancient Rome as open air courtyards. Today they are generally enclosed structures with glass roofs, traditional construction framing, and large windows, which create the greenhouse environment. Atriums can serve multiple purposes, including: dining, entertaining, art, and retail. Many atriums are decorative and follow classic styling. There are often columns lining the traditional walls, finials and ridge cresting adorning the skylight, and grids in the window design. The frame finish of both the skylight and windows can be custom matched to any existing frame. A custom designed atrium is a great addition to any building plan; many atriums are created from existing sunrooms or from rooms with good solar exposure that can accommodate skylights. Either situation works well, and Solar Innovations, Inc. can assist you in creating a fully functioning atrium greenhouse. The structure will provide adequate lighting from above and through large windows, allowing virtually any type of plant to flourish. Cold Frames Cold frames are one of the oldest forms of greenhouses. A cold frame is a small container with a glass lid that houses plants. The cold frame is placed on top of the soil where plants are growing. Cold frames capture solar heat and store it for later use during the night, which allows the plants to survive during cold temperatures. Seedlings can be started in a cold frame in early spring to get a jump on the season. Then in fall, cold weather crops such as carrots and kale can be planted in the cold frame for fresh vegetables into the winter season. Traditional cold frames are constructed out of wood, which can rot after several years and require maintenance. Solar Innovations, Inc. s cold frames are constructed out of aluminum that will not rot, warp, or rust. Lids can remain open by a manual hold open bar, which is weather resistant. They can be added onto a greenhouse s exterior for increased growing space. 8

Plant Specific Greenhouses Citrus A citrus greenhouse is a structure where tropical and citrus trees are grown. The original structure was called an orangery, which featured cement or brick walls with windows. Today s citrus greenhouses are all glass and aluminum. Solar Innovations, Inc. can design citrus greenhouses for specific growing temperature ranges to foster trees such as oranges, mangoes, papaya, guava, kumquats, and an assortment of tropical plants. Citrus greenhouses are typically decorative with traditional styles featuring ridge cresting, finials, and decorative grid work. The interior environment is equipped with benches and climate control accessories like heaters, evaporative coolers, humidifiers, and shading, all of which can be automated. Bonsai Bonsai is an ancient form of art. A bonsai grower may begin their collection in the house, but as the collection grows, it may become time to consider a custom bonsai greenhouse. Multiple zones can be constructed to accommodate various growing requirements. A zone can be designed for tropical trees with high temperature and humidity, while the evergreen varieties require a separate zone with cool temperatures and dormancy hours. Benches, humidifiers, circulating fans, and shades are available to create a custom bonsai environment for your specific collection. Palm Growing exotic trees in a greenhouse can be very rewarding. Common selections include palms, citrus, and bonsai. While each tree has different requirements, the basic components are similar; temperature being the major factor. Tropical trees need warm temperatures. Humidity is a key success factor, thus Solar Innovations, Inc. offers several humidifier options. Circulation fans move air, stabilize humidity levels, and help prevent the spread of disease. Benches raise plants above the floor, provide exposure to circulating air, and allow for easier observation of plant health. Orchids Solar manufactures greenhouses designed specifically for orchids. Raising these flowers in a residential setting can be challenging, because orchids thrive in humidity above 50%. Certain varieties of orchids require high temperatures, humid environments, and frequent watering; these elements do not lend themselves to window sills. With Solar Innovations, Inc. greenhouses, multiple zones can be created. Temperature, light range, humidity, and water supply can be precisely monitored by an environmental control system. Circulation fans, humidifiers, shades, and irrigation systems are available to create an ideal environment. Accessories can be automated to accommodate specific orchid needs. 9

Greenhouse Styles English An English greenhouse has a specific style and is the epitome of traditional, classical appearance. English greenhouses are highly ornate and are a beautiful and functional addition to any home or business; they immediately draw attention. English greenhouses may include decorative elements such as: dormers, ridge cresting, finials, grids, masonry base walls, or raised panels. Pilasters may also be added to a greenhouse s exterior for a more formal appearance. A Palladian arch and historically designed gutters are also attractive additions. The greenhouse s interior can include crown molding and bar caps in various profile options. Decorative castings are often used as plant hangers. The combination of these enhancements creates a striking English greenhouse. Contemporary Contemporary greenhouses consist of large glass areas and clean lines unlike their decorative counterparts. Linear format is often associated with contemporary styles and can be accomplished in modern greenhouses. Mullions are frequently used to achieve horizontal designs. The greenhouse s finish can enhance the modern appearance. Popular choices include white, black, and clear anodized, which is often used in industrial settings. Stainless steel cladding can be applied directly to the aluminum frame as well. The interior of the greenhouse achieves a modern flare through the use of flat rafters and commercial grade accessories. 10

Greenhouse Configurations Designs to Fit Any Customer s Needs Solar s producst are not feature a standard line of pre-fabricated models waiting in the warehouse. Your greenhouse will be built to your exact specifications. To get started, it is helpful to determine the overall shape of your structure as you begin to design your greenhouse. Straight Eave Double Pitch Double pitch is a classic shape for greenhouses and is the most common configuration for free-standing units. It provides a uniform space that is tallest at the ridge. As you determine the roof pitch, keep in mind the surrounding structures, as well as the fact that each plane of the roof can employ a different pitch.one of the gable ends will typically be the attachment point. 11

Greenhouse Configurations Straight Lean-to A straight eave, lean-to shape is the most common configuration for greenhouses attached to another structure. They tend to require a smaller investment of materials when compared to a double pitch, but can provide the same interior area. This attached greenhouse allows for direct access during inclement weather. This configuration is an excellent option if you only have a small amount of space. It is equally impressive when used in large spans along a building. An advantage to this shape is the solid rear wall, which can act as thermal storage for solar heat. Many customers modify the back wall with shelving for additional storage. 12

Greenhouse Configurations Curved Eave Double Pitch In a curved eave, double pitch configuration, the eaves of the walls are curved and create a modern appearance. When decorative elements are added to adorn the greenhouse, the aesthetic develops a more classic look, reminiscent of wooden greenhouses of the past. The curve can begin high on the rafter (shown above) to allow for taller interior elements, or low on the rafter for a more traditional look. 13

Greenhouse Configurations Curved Eave Lean-to 14 Curved eave, lean-to walls are curved to create a modern appearance in this attached configuration. Curves can begin high on the rafter to allow for taller interior elements, or low on the rafter for a more traditional look.

Greenhouse Configurations Bull Nose This roof design includes a double pitch section that tapers into a nose; it is also known as a conservatory nose or Victorian style. The nose typically projects half the width of the structure with six to nine segments comprising the radial shape. The nose part of the design can also be designed as an attached lean-to with no double pitch section; in which case the nose attaches directly to a house. This is another design which is easily equipped with decorative accessories to achieve a design specific aesthetic. 15

16 Interior greenhouse with ridge vents used for plants and people.

Interior greenhouse with fixed benches, eave vents, ridge vents, rings and collars, and trusses. 17

Greenhouse Configurations Hip End A hip end roof is an attractive option, typically selected for its aesthetic qualities. All sides of the roof slope downward to the walls, usually at a gentle pitch, which eliminates gable ends. A hip end is easily adapted to numerous design styles. The size of the structure is smaller than a comparably sized double pitch greenhouse, which can correlate to lower heating and cooling costs. Hip end greenhouses can be attached to a building or constructed as freestanding units. 18

Greenhouse Configurations Custom Configurations Solar Innovations, Inc. specializes in custom greenhouse configurations. If you have a uniquely shaped project in mind, you have come to the right place. No project is too small or too large and may include: multiple turns, additional walls, or unique accessory operations. The greenhouse can be designed to fit the shape of your house with valleys, two-story height, or interior dividing walls. Customized testing and engineering are available if necessary. Many manufacturers set a limit on the placement or number of windows allowed in a greenhouse, but Solar Innovations, Inc. allows you the freedom to incorporate as many windows as you see fit. The same is true for doors, ridge vents, and eave sashes. If you wish to discuss your custom greenhouse with Solar Innovations, Inc. s estimators, they can provide a budget for your selections and a sales representative will work with you to refine your structure. Solar Innovations, Inc. s mission is to provide customers with the best functioning greenhouse imaginable for your investment. 19

Structural Accessories Structural accessories can add architectural appeal to your greenhouse. These elements often reflect traditional greenhouse styles. The most commonly used units are lanterns and dormers. Both designs will enlarge the size of the greenhouse and help to create a distinct design. Full Lantern Hip End Lantern Bull Nose Lantern Flush Dormer Extended Double Pitch Dormer with Entry Dormer Bull Nose Dormer Dormers Dormers are small structures which project from a sloped roof. They typically begin at the ridge line or in the middle of the roof. Multiple dormers can be used with a long span or one on each pitch of the greenhouse. A traditional greenhouse appearance can be achieved by incorporating the following on a dormer: Pilasters can be set on either side of the gable. Grids can be utilized on the gable; numerous patterns available. A Palladian arch can be incorporated into the design. Ridge cresting can adorn the ridge of the dormer with a finial at the peak. Lanterns A lantern is located atop the roof and they can span the entire length of the roof or occupy only a small section. It can feature a hip end, conservatory nose, or double pitch configuration. Vents can be incorporated for natural air circulation. Lanterns add a decorative element, while allowing additional light into the greenhouse. Lantern Lantern Entryways, Vestibules, & Headhouses An entryway or vestibule may act as an airlock and reduces cold air from infiltrating the greenhouse. This can prevent cold shock to the plants closest to the door. An entryway or vestibule can also offer storage and increase energy efficiency. Headhouses are much larger rooms and offer potting areas and storage for greenhouses and may even include classroom space. 20 Lantern Lantern

Placement & Considerations Solar Exposure The longest side of the greenhouse should be within a 20 orientation to true south to achieve the highest amount of solar exposure. However, a freestanding greenhouse s orientation is not as critical, because it receives light from all sides and can be supplemented with grow lights. Attached or lean-to greenhouses would preferably be installed on the south, southeast, or east facing walls for the greatest light exposure. A western exposure provides enough light, but the summer afternoon sun may make cooling the structure less cost effective. A north facing greenhouse is not recommended because it only provides enough sun for plants with low light requirements. The greenhouse should be oriented due south when possible, because the light is ideal for passive heat which warms the greenhouse and nurtures the plants. Solar Blockages Many customers are concerned with trees located close to the proposed site of a greenhouse. The most common concern is that falling trees or limbs may damage the structure. Solar Innovations, Inc. uses tempered and laminated glass to reduce the risk of breakage or cracks should the greenhouse suffer an impact. Solar Innovations, Inc. experts will evaluate the possible effects of surrounding tree cover. Often times a deciduous tree may be beneficial to the greenhouse, because it provides shade during the summer for cooling but allows solar gain when its foliage drops for winter. Easy Access The property s features will play an important role in determining the greenhouse s location and orientation. All projects require adequate access to the project site for material delivery and installation. This will include the work done by other subcontractors like masonry, plumbing, and electricity. Arrangements need to be made prior to work commencing if the site s location requires access through another person s property. If crane access and/or a freight elevator are required to transport materials to a rooftop in an urban area, component size and project design will be even more critical. Once installed, owners need the ability to access the greenhouse year round. This can become a difficult situation, depending upon the region. Plants still need to be watered and tended regardless of the weather. The same is true during rain and high temperatures. Keeping the greenhouse in close proximity to the main structure will allow for easy access during extreme weather. 21

Foundations & Flooring While Solar Innovations, Inc. does not provide labor or materials for foundations, we do make recommendations based on the greenhouse s use and structure type. Please consult your local code official. Wood Foundations Pressure-treated lumber can be bolted together to form a foundation for greenhouses under 200 square feet, commonly referred to as hobby-sized. Greenhouses less than 6 x 8 can be constructed on a foundation of one tier of lumber. A 10 x 12 structure will require two tiers of lumber to create a solid foundation. Two-foot sections of rebar should be inserted into the ground and fastened to the lumber base for added strength. Concrete Foundations A stronger foundation is necessary with a greenhouse larger than 200 square feet. Options include: a concrete slab, a continuous concrete footing, or a concrete block footing. Footings should extend below the frost line to prevent frost heave. A concrete block footing should extend a minimum of 6 above grade to form a knee wall. Tying a greenhouse to a foundation or footing can be achieved by embedding anchor bolts into concrete. It is recommended that a water proof compound be applied as a moisture barrier and surround the foundation with insulation panels. Knee Walls Knee walls (sometimes referred to as base or pony walls) are commonly featured in the construction of greenhouses. Applying a stone or brick veneer directly to a concrete knee wall is a cost-efficient way to achieve a classic aesthetic. Solar Innovations, Inc. recommends insulating the knee wall to optimize heating and cooling. Knee walls are typically between 30 and 36 tall. Storage pieces, furnishings, and garden tools can be hidden from external view when walls are formed. Flooring Selectingflooring is a very important decision in the design of your greenhouse. The floor needs to be comfortable for the gardener, allow drainage, and be sterile. All floor systems need proper drainage and slope to remove excess water. One option is to install a French drain into the foundation as it is poured. Solar Innovations, Inc. does not supply materials or labor for flooring, but we do make suggestions based on the greenhouse s primary function. Concrete Concrete is an economical selection for a greenhouse. Simply use your foundation as the floor. Concrete can increase thermal mass storage and does not harbor mold or disease; however, it will require regular cleaning due to soil build up. Pavers Using a paver floor is another economical choice. Pavers are typically used on smaller scale greenhouses that do not require concrete foundations. Pavers are placed directly upon the soil in a pattern which adds character to the structure. Tile Tile is durable and easy to clean. There are many color and pattern options to achieve a specific design. Use slip resistant or textured tile to help prevent falls. Gravel Gravel is the most economical choice and easy to install. It reduces the spread of mud and dust. However, gravel may need to be replaced more frequently than other options. Depending on the gravel s density, weeds may sprout. 22

Framing & Finishes Aluminum Framework Solar Innovations, Inc. s aluminum framework is constructed with a thermal break, making it energy efficient while minimizing heating and cooling costs, while protecting the interior from extreme environmental conditions. Aluminum s durability and strength also allows greater spans and customization than that of traditional wooden structures. Using aluminum allows for the manufacturing of custom extrusions. Solar Innovations, Inc. also has the ability to integrate smaller I-beams and tubular fixtures in conjunction with trusses to enhance aesthetics. There are eight stock finishes and multiple metal cladding options available. Textured and aged finishes can be added for a historic appeal. Solar Innovations, Inc. s greenhouse finishes are virtually maintenance free. Copper Metal Cladding Standard Hartford Green Metal Cladding Cladding can be added to the exterior of a greenhouse for aesthetic purposes. Copper and bronze claddings are popular additions to historically-styled greenhouses. Stainless Steel cladding is appropriate for a modern greenhouse or coastal applications and will not corrode. The cladding or be used to highlight specific areas. Paint Finishes Solar Innovations, Inc. s greenhouses are offered in many paint finish options. A painted finish is suitable for residential and light commercial projects. The finish will withstand exposure to the elements and is resistant to impact. Custom colors can be created in a high quality fluoropolymer paint finish. An anodized finish is best suited for commercial jobs, due to use, and projects near salt water as it is corrosive. Anodized finishes are designed to withstand these conditions. Standard Color Choices Anodized Colors & Metal Cladding Black Natural Bronze White Hartford Sandstone Mill Clay Green Aluminum Dark Class I Copper Stainless Simulated Bronze Bronze Clear Steel Lead Coated Anodized Anodized Class I Clear Anodized Custom Sage Green Standard White Maintenance A greenhouse, like any other building, will require maintenance from time to time. The frame and glass will accumulate dust through the seasons, which will need to be removed. Solar Innovations, Inc. does not recommend using harsh chemicals. A solution of water, vinegar, and dish detergent will work well to clean the glass and frame. The key is to remove any dirt build-up from the frame, which will prevent future maintenance issues. Operable window and vent tracks need to be cleaned and checked to maintain proper function. Always test your greenhouse accessories, including: heating, cooling, shades, operable vents and windows as a new season approaches. Motorized operations, such as ridge vents, will need lubricated from time to time. Leaves will also need to be removed from the gutters, just like those located on your home. 23

Glazing Options Insulated Glass Recommendations Glazing choice plays a critical role in determining the performance of your greenhouse, and the selection is both location and design specific. Solar Innovations, Inc. s greenhouse experts will work with you to determine your best options. U-values indicate the amount of heat transferred through glass. Lower values indicate the glass acts as a better insulator, which creates a more consistent temperature. Typical glass ranges start around 6.0 for a single pane of glass and reach values around 0.13 for insulated glass with LowE coatings, Stainless Steel spacers, and argon infill. LowE coatings allow the sun s rays to pass through the glass while reducing the amount of heat transfer. Glass Description Overall Unit Thickness U-Value R-Value Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Visible Lightt Trans (%) Reflectance Out (%) Reflectance In (%) UV Transmittance (%) Outside Lite/Inside Lite Clear/Clear 1" % 15% 15% 58% 180/Clear 1" % 15% 15% 29% 272/Clear 1" % 11% 12% 16% 366/Clear 1" % 11% 12% 5% 340/Clear 1" % 11% 13% 2% 180/i89 1" % 15% 14% 27% 272/i89 1" % 11% 11% 16% 366/i89 1" % 11% 11% 5% 340/i89 1" % 11% 12% 2% Gray/Clear 1" % 9% 13% 32% Gray/180 1" % 9% 14% 17% Gray/272 1" % 8% 9% 10% Bronze/Clear 1" % 10% 13% 31% Bronze/180 1" % 10% 14% 17% Bronze/272 1" % 8% 10% 10% Outside Lite/Middle Lite/Inside Lite 180/Clear/ /8" % 20% 20% 13% 272/Clear/ /8" % 15% 18% 8% 366/Clear/ /8" % 14% 18% 2% 340/Clear/ /8" % 13% 19% 1% 24 LowE 340 This glass type is used when the greenhouse needs to be shaded from intense direct sunlight. A coating is applied to clear glass, which blocks the sun and causes a soft blue tint. LowE 340 insulated glass has a U-value of 0.25, an R-value of 4.0, a visible light transmittance of 39%, and a solar heat gain coefficient of LowE 272 LowE 272 has a very slight green tint and this coating assists in regulating temperatures in the greenhouse, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. This is the most commonly used LowE glass for greenhouses. The insulated double pane version has a U-value of 0.25, an R-value of 4, a visible light transmittance of 72%, and a solar heat gain coefficient of LowE 366 The best insulation values of LowE glass choices comes from 366. It will help retain the greenhouse s heat in the winter and block the heat from entry in the summer. LowE 366 blocks 95% of the sun s harmful UV rays, which will help preserve the color and composition of furnishings, draperies, and wall treatments. This insulated double pane product has a U-value of 0.24, an R-value of 4.13, a visible light transmittance of 65%, and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.27.

Doors & Window Options Terrace and French Doors Terrace doors are single swing doors, while French doors are a set of two swinging doors. In greenhouse applications, door heights are sometimes increased to accommodate large plants or equipment. Units can be hinged left or right and swing in or out. Sizes are custom designed to suit your structure. The doors are constructed out of aluminum with insulated, double pane glass. Arch Top Doors An arch top door has a rounded frame and leaf. The majority of door manufacturers offer a square door with an arched transom, but Solar Innovations, Inc. produces a fully operable, arch top door. Sliding Glass Doors Sliding doors, sometimes called patio doors, can be featured in greenhouses. The doors slide on a track and stack behind a fixed panel or into a pocket. Awning Windows An awning window is the most common type used for ventilation. The window is hinged at the top, cranks out, and can be left open during light rain showers. Any water that hits the glass simply runs away from the structure. Casement Windows A casement window is a classic greenhouse choice. This window hinges on the left or right and opens like a book. Casements allow for more air circulation than awnings and can be inswing or outswing. Hopper Windows A hopper window is an operable window typically used above a door or window to ventilate the greenhouse. A transom can also operate as a hopper window, which tilts outward. Transom Windows A transom window is located above a door or window and is typically 24 high. Transoms are often fixed windows, but they are available in awning or hopper configurations. Grids can be added or the glass can be etched with a pattern for an ornate appearance. Door Options Grid Patterns All Glass This configuration utilizes a full glass panel, so light is allowed into the room without interruption. This option accentuates modern, simplistic, and contemporary styles. Full Grids This configuration consists of grids spread throughout the entire panel. Muntins (grids between glass) offer easy cleaning, while SDLS (interior and exterior applied grids) provide visual depth. Grid and Base Panel An insulated panel is located on the bottom of the door and is typically 36 tall with a raised grid pattern on the panel. Grids are located above the panel and are available in various patterns. Radius Grids A radius configuration is characterized by a half round grid located in the upper third of the window. The radius diameter differs based on window size. Double Gothic Grids Double Gothic is a very decorative grid reminiscent of gothic cathedrals. Single Gothic arches are also available. English Grids The English grid design features two horizontal and two vertical, off center grids. This design complements arts and craft homes as well as contemporary styles. Traditional Grids The traditional grid consists of multiple horizontal and vertical divisions. The number of simulated lights typically runs between three to five both vertically and horizontally. 25

Decorative Elements Interior Muntins Interior muntins are the recommended grid selection for greenhouses. These grids allow nearly any pattern and have a more convenient cleaning process. The grids do not contribute to dirt accumulation on the glass, because they are between the glass. Ridge Cresting A highly decorative design element with a repeating pattern which runs the entire length of the roof s ridge line. Applied Leaded Grid A grid pattern is made out of lead and applied to windows to simulate historically accurate divided windows. Gable Trim Runs along the perimeter of the gable end of a structure; also known as rake molding. Design follows classical crown molding profiles. Palladian Arch Available in varying arch and division styles, pediments can be constructed of aluminum glazing bars or grid work. Base Panel Decorative raised panels can be used on greenhouses and door systems. A knee wall can be created with base panels for a traditional appearance. Gutter These provide the traditional function of a gutter with a highly decorative appearance. They are available in several classic profiles, including a crown molding design. Etched Pattern A decorative pattern is etched into the surface of the glass. Any number of patterns can be selected to create both modern and classis styles. Finial A decorative ornament that adorns the highest point or end of a roof line, which is also called a spire. 26

Greenhouse Interior Layout Solar Innovations, Inc. will help you carefully plan the interior flow, accessory selection, bench arrangement, and shelf layout of your custom greenhouse. Items such as storage space, shades, and walkways are often overlooked during the design process, but they are critical to the success of the greenhouse. Air circulation for plants, storage space for greenhouse necessities, and ample walkways to access your plants should all be addressed during the design process. Solar Innovations, Inc. provides customers with one of the largest selections of greenhouse accessories in the industry. Please visit our website or contact the Solar Innovations, Inc. team to speak with a greenhouse specialist for options beyond those detailed in the following pages. Please us photos or sketches of your ideas if possible to facilitate the discussion. Typical Greenhouse Accessories Solar Innovations, Inc. s greenhouse accessories can be combined to create a balanced and efficient growing environment. Our accessories can be customized to meet your specific needs, and they are designed to work with either manual switches or automatically with sensors. Automating your accessories can be as simple as utilizing single stage thermostats or as sophisticated as installing a fully automated control system. Advanced greenhouse designs can utilize chillers, foggers, and other temperature controls. Your individual growing needs and the design of your greenhouse will determine the specific accessories required. Solar Innovations, Inc. s greenhouse experts can assemble and implement the perfect environmental control system to fit your needs. The ridge vents allow hot air to escape, while the windows and eave vents allow cool, fresh air to enter. Circulation fans will prevent air stratification and keep the temperature and humidity levels uniform. An evaporative cooler can bring cool, moist air into the greenhouse if the temperature becomes too high. The interior environment can also be modified by foggers to increase humidity. Irrigation systems can water and deliver nutrients to the plants. 27

Methods of Growing Greenhouses often utilize a combination of growing methods. Earth beds, benches, trellises, and containers can all be utilized and dedicated to growing. Container gardening is less physical in nature; children and the elderly can easily tend to potted plants stored on benches. This is beneficial because bending and kneeling, which is required for earth growing, can be strenuous. Pest and weed maintenance is easier to control when plants are individually potted. Both earth beds and pots lend themselves to the cultivation of many plants. Traditional greenhouses grow plants in containers, but earth beds can also be incorporated. This is a method of growing where plants are propagated directly in the ground. Earth bed growing is a simple solution and emulates outdoor beds, depending on the foundation. Plants benefit from the extra space and do not have to be repotted as they grow. Stacked Trellis Single Trellis Trellises Solar Innovations, Inc. offers custom aluminum trellises, which eliminate rotting or rusting. The trellis consists of cross tie aluminum wire enclosed within a frame. Two options are available: single or stacked. A single trellis is a traditional trellis, where the unit is only one section. Stacked trellises are shorter trellises connected by chain, aligned atop each other. Trellises can be as tall as needed and are appropriate for interior and exterior gardens. The framing is provided in a mill finish, but it can be custom painted. Benches Benches are a staple accessory in a greenhouse, as they enhance the amount of growing space. Benches come in standard sizing from other manufacturers, but Solar Innovations, Inc. creates custom size benches to fit any configuration. Potting Potting benches are used as work stations and can be used to repot flowers, store tools, and display plants. Rolling Rolling benches have fixed legs and an expandable top, which extends growing space into the aisles and can be retracted when not in use. Tiered Tiered benches can stand three levels tall and can be placed above or under a fixed bench. Low light plants grow well under bench tiers. Fixed Fixed benches are a staple in greenhouses. They are inoperable and are available with Mahogany, galvanized steel mesh, or black polyethylene crosshatched tops. 28 Seedling Seedling benches are raised beds on legs which allow you to grow plants directly in the soil. The bench has a solid bottom and can be designed to accommodate varying depths of soil. Gravel Gravel benches consist of a solid bench top, which is filled with gravel and water. This is an ideal bench for humidity loving plants such, as tropicals and orchids.

Methods of Growing Shelving Installing shelving is another way to expand your greenhouse s growing area. The units can be placed directly in front of a window, on a solid wall, or located high on the eaves. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers several different types of shelving (shown below). Open Grate Open grate shelving units are practical and affordable. They allow optimal air flow and are easy to maintain. Tops are available in galvanized steel mesh or black polyethylene plastic. Wood Wood shelving inserts are traditional English greenhouse elements made of hardwood species, like Mahogany and Cedar. These slats can be stained or left in their natural state. Metal Bracket Metal bracket shelving supports are an economical choice, have a functional appearance, and can be mounted above or below the shelf. Decorative Casting Decorative corner shelf supports are historical greenhouse elements. This shelf support works well with conservatory style greenhouses. The supports can double as a plant hanger (as shown below). 29

Methods of Growing Hangers Decorative hanging baskets are a popular porch item during the summer and can live through the winter in your greenhouse. A variety of plants can be grown year round in hanging baskets within the greenhouse. There are many varieties of hangers offered by Solar Innovations, Inc. Truss A truss is a structural element that spans the width of the greenhouse and can hold a high quantity of heavy plants. Ring and Collar Ring and collars are a type of historical plant hanger that can be adorned with an appliqué and hold medium weight plants in large quantities. Aluminum Pipe Aluminum pipe plant hangers are stationary tubes that can hold a large amount of medium to lightweight plants. Single Rafter Single rafter plant hangers are small hooks placed in rafters to allow the hanging of one light weight plant. 30 Sliding A sliding plant hanger is designed to slide left and right via trolleys. There are wheels built into the unit that make a plant s relocation effortless.

Ventilation Ventilation Operable vents, windows, and doors can promote convective air ventilation in your greenhouse. You should consider the ventilation design after the configuration is selected. Proper planning can provide fresh air and cooling to the living space. The use of ridge vents, which are placed at the roof s highest point, reduces the chance of the greenhouse overheating. When hot air rises and becomes trapped in the peak of the roof, the ridge vents open via a motor or a pole operator and allow the hot air to escape convectively. Multiple bays can be joined together, and the entire roof line can open. Windows and eave vents add natural air circulation and can draw cool, fresh air into the greenhouse while forcing hot air out through ridge vents. These components assist in circulation and temperature balancing within the greenhouse. Thermostatically Controlled Ridge vents and windows can be mechanically controlled by a linear actuator motor. This motor is specifically designed for high humidity areas such as a greenhouse. All controls are contained in weatherproof housing. Each vent operates based on temperature, which is read on a thermostat mounted in the greenhouse. A signal is sent to the motor, which opens the vents when the thermostat reaches a designated degree. Correct thermostat placement is necessary to prevent false readings from direct sunlight or heaters. Thermostats are set to operate based on a temperature range of approximately 5-10 degrees. For example, vents can be set to open when the greenhouse reaches 70 degrees and close when the temperature drops to 60 degrees. The vents will remain open and allow air to circulate while the temperature is within this range. The vents can be forced to open manually if needed, but are intended to provide effortless natural ventilation to the plants and people inhabiting your space. 31

Irrigation Water is an essential element for plants in a greenhouse and needs to be carefully controlled. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers irrigation solutions to avoid problems that may arise from the inability to water plants on a consistent basis. An automatic watering system can regulate the flow of water and nutrients to your plants without you being onsite. There are various system choices available for your selection. Watering/Humidification Systems Misting Systems A) Suspended: System is suspended from the rafters and does not require bench space. Drip Systems A drip system acts somewhat like a soaker hose. A black hose with attached individual drip tubes spans the length of the bench. Each drip tube is placed into a flower pot. The tubes then supply continuous drops of water into the containers. Each plant receives the same amount of water. Different pressure rates, or drip rates, are available, and zinc tips keep the tubes secured in the pots. Fogging Tropical plants often need 60-80% humidity, which is difficult to achieve without a fogging system. A fogger produces humidity required to successfully grow your plants without disrupting visibility. The fan blows water into the greenhouse, produces humidity, and creates a slight fog. Hose Reel Hoses normally take up valuable floor space in a greenhouse and are difficult to manage. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers a retractable hose reel. The reel is mounted to a wall and pivots left and right. Simply tug the hose, and it automatically retracts into the holder, clearing floor space. The unit can be mounted on the exterior or interior of the greenhouses. B) Polyrail: A rail is attached to the bench which disperses water through a nozzle. C) Risers: Individual risers are attached to the bench top. Each riser can be moved to accommodate plant rotation. Water Features Water and plants go hand-in-hand. Incorporating a water feature into a greenhouse can have both a practical and decorative use. A water feature is a great way to add character to the greenhouse. Water fountains and bird baths are often used with outdoor landscaping, but they can also be incorporated into a greenhouse. The relaxing sound of running water can be achieved in a greenhouse through the addition of water features. 32 Ponds are another water feature commonly found in greenhouses. The pond can be an additional medium for growing aquatic plants, such as water lilies, water hyacinths, cannas, and elephant ears. Waterfalls can be designed in conjunction with the pond. Fish can be raised in the pond and will fertilize the plants growing in the water. The water environment will allow you to grow year-round and enjoy an outdoor environment.

Heating and Cooling A B Fan Options Plant health is vital to the greenhouse s success, and air circulation plays a major role. Air movement reduces plant disease and can stimulate fertilization. A) Circulation fans constantly move air within a greenhouse and are essential to the plant s health. The fans also eliminate hot and cold pockets and keep temperature and humidity uniform. Placing fans in opposite corners of the greenhouse helps keep a consistent rhythm of air movement. Fans also reduce condensation. B) Intake louvers and exhaust fans are typically used with uninsulated greenhouses. The exhaust fan expels excess heat from the greenhouse, while the intake louver brings in fresh air, and together they regulate temperature and promote healthy plant growth. Heating and Cooling The interior temperature of your greenhouse is critical to how well your plants will grow. Most greenhouses will need to be heated and cooled to provide the proper indoor environment for plants. Heating Any heat source will keep a greenhouse warm, including: electric, propane, natural gas, oil, radiant, wood, or solar thermal. However, some tropical plants require the greenhouse be kept at a constantly warm temperature, while hardy cold crops like lettuce and kale will thrive at lower temperatures. Solar Innovations, Inc. greenhouse experts will evaluate your location, greenhouse design, and plant types when selecting a heating source, to provide you with the best suggestion for heating. Different heating systems have different advantages, and greenhouse sizes and shapes will determine if one heater or multiple heaters will be required. Cooling Cooling a greenhouse is more involved and specific than heating. Most forms of heating will provide the same result, but the wrong type of cooling can prove detrimental to plants. Solar Innovations, Inc. suggests an evaporative method of cooling in addition to ridge and eave vents. As the heat accumulates and rises, it forces the ridge vents to open. An evaporative cooler is needed when this venting is not sufficient. This system blows outside air over a wet pad that takes the heat out of the air and cools it. This cooler air is then introduced into the greenhouse. This method is reliable, efficient, and can be automatically controlled. Solar Heat Gain All glass structures are prone to solar heat gain and the greenhouse effect. Solar Innovations, Inc. greenhouse experts can evaluate the solar resource of a location throughout the year and make suggestions for the best management to use it most effectively and prevent overheating. 33

Lighting The amount of hours a plant grows can be extended with supplemental lighting known as grow lights. Most year-round greenhouses will require lighting during the winter so plants receive their necessary photoperiod for normal development. Grow lights can be used to produce artificial sunlight on shady days when plants do not receive sufficient sunlight. Plants can produce more flowers or fruit in a shorter amount of time with this additional light. Plant Lighting High Pressure Sodium A high pressure sodium lamp emits more light in the red/ orange wavelengths to promote greater flowers and fruit. It is recommended for production of vegetables and cut flowers. Using this light constantly, even during daylight, can provide increased production. Metal Halide A metal halide grow light emits more light in the blue wavelength spectrum to promote vegetative plant growth. Plants grown under this type of light are typically taller and bushier. Workspace Lighting Most lights are not designed to withstand the amount of water and humidity in greenhouses. Lights will eventually rust, break, and stop functioning. Water-resistant systems with fluorescent lights can be mounted at the ridge of a structure for illumination. 34

Shading Summer sun may be too intense for plants to grow, depending on the location of the greenhouse, they may burn or die. One way to avoid this situation is to install a shading system. Solar Innovations, Inc. provides operable, fixed, interior, and exterior shading systems. Interior Fixed An interior fixed shade system permanently attaches to the frame and is appropriate for greenhouses, which are used to grow delicate plants such as orchids or other tropical flowers that may be sensitive to overexposure. Exterior Fixed These fixed shades systems will prevent heat and light from entering the greenhouse, stay in place, and do not move. These shades are recommended for locations with intense sunlight year-round. Interior Operable An interior operable shade system provides control over the amount of light entering the greenhouse. Shades are available in manual or motorized options and can be drawn on bright days or retracted on overcast days. Exterior Operable An exterior operable system consists of shades mounted on the outside of a greenhouse. The shades reduce light and heat build up in the greenhouse, which helps promote healthy plants. Manual and motorized options are available, along with various shade fabric colors. Exterior Mounted The shades on this system are raised 5-7 above the ridge and allow for air circulation, which reduces the glass temperature. 35

Control Systems A fully functioning greenhouse often has many accessories. The greenhouse can include watering, lighting, heating, ventilation, and various other options. The interior of the greenhouse becomes an ideal plant environment when the accessories work together. Plants will flourish if humidity, temperature, and air circulation are controlled. Solar Innovations, Inc. recommends an environmental control system which can automate the greenhouse to maintain your desired environment in order to ease the burden of greenhouse maintenance. Items an Environmental Controller Will Operate: Ridge Vents Eave Vents Motorized Windows Heating Cooling Circulation Fans Grow Lights Misting Systems Watering Systems Shade Systems Special features of a control system: Multiples of the same type of accessory can be grouped together or operated independently. For example, a greenhouse with two ridge vents can be programmed for them to open simultaneously or independently. A staged opening allows ventilation units to open at varying degrees between the fully open and fully closed positions. The environmental controller works similarly to a residential smart house. This system automatically controls the accessories without additional effort on the part of the owner. Everything will operate from predetermined settings. The ridge vents and windows will automatically open when the greenhouse becomes too hot. The evaporative cooler will start to operate if a desirable temperature is not reached. The same is true for humidity and heating. Watering systems can also be automated. A software program can be installed on your computer to control the greenhouse s settings. Daily records can be created and saved for future reference. The software is capable of setting off alarms if the temperature drops too low in winter, and can send an alert to your cellular phone for quicker notification. An environmental controller can provide the user with peace of mind. There should never be a concern that the greenhouse will overheat, be too dry, or vary beyond the desired temperature range. The gardeners can go to work or on vacation and come home to plants in the same condition. On the commercial side, research details can be recorded and controlled. The environmental controller will make gardening easier and more enjoyable, allowing the gardener to focus on the plants, not the mechanics. 36
