1 September 2014 / February 2008 Lots Of Plants Changed Hands At Annual ECAMGA Plant Sale There was an abundance of quality plants available at the annual ECAMGA plant sale and there were many people who took advantage of the opportunity to give them a good home and in doing so help the ECAMGA fund many of their educational projects. There were even a few next generation gardeners there as you can see from the pictures (Do we call them the Gardenials as opposed to the Millennial?? Sad joke! Sorry about that!). 3 Page 3 Eau Claire Area Master Gardener Newsletter September 2014 Hello Master Gardener Volunteers, It s time to turn in volunteer reporting forms. Hours are due by October 1, You are reporting on activities you ve done from September 30, 2013 September 30, Send to me at: Erin.LaFaive@co.eau-claire.wi.us. Dues can be sent with the reporting hours too. The Eau Claire MGV Association dues are $10, which includes an electronic copy of newsletter. If you prefer a paper copy of the newsletter dues are $15. Wisconsin MGV Association dues are $5. Both state and local dues can be paid with one check. Make payable to ECAMG and send to Eau Claire County UW Extension, 227 First St. W. Altoona, WI FAQs -Do I include driving time? Please include time it took you to drive to and from volunteer activities (do not count drive time for continuing education activities). -Should I turn in my form even if I didn t get the minimum 24 volunteer hours? Yes, these hours are just as important. They re included in reports; added to your cumulative totals; and indicate you still want to be involved in volunteering with us. -What can I count as continuing education hours? For more information on this go to: -How are these reports used? 1. To determine if individuals met the 24-hour minimum requirement to maintain Master Gardener Volunteer status with UW Extension. 2. I use the numbers in performance management reports to the County; and 3. The state MGV Program office reports to the UW system AND state officials that determine funding. Erin LaFaive, M.S. Horticulture Educator & Co-Dept. Head Eau Claire County UW Extension 227 First St. W. Altoona, WI "Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day -like writing a poem or saying a prayer." Anne Morrow Lindberg I would like to thank all the Master Gardeners who donated their time and plants to help make our annual fall plant sale a success. Even though we had fewer plants than last year, we had a better selection and better quality plants this year, making for more money than last year. It seems more people were interested in natives this year. There were many questions about them and we were able to sell most of our selection of natives. So, remember, next year when you are opening your gardens and thinning plants, pot up those strays and unwanteds. By fall they will have grown into handsome young plants just waiting to be sold. I have been known to unwittingly buy back the very plants I donated. Thanks again. It was a fun day. Nina Logan

4 Page 4 Eau Claire Area Master Gardener News September 2014 Zellmer Garden Tour Enchanting Eau Claire Area Master Gardener Association (ECAMGA) members gathered on the evening of Wednesday, August 20 th to tour a truly delightful and enchanting garden. Mary Zellmer hosted the ECAMGAs at her home in the rural Fall Creek area. There was much to see, a pond, gigantic swaths of umbrella plant, gentians, angelica gigas and much, much more. The evening proved to be a delight and was topped off by sweets and tea and refreshments. If you missed it you missed a whole lot of eye candy. The next ECAMGA educational meeting will be held on September 16th at which time Todd Chwala, Superintendent of Eau Claire's Parks, Forestry and Cemeteries will be talking about our trees, what has been happening to them and what to do about it. See you there! Photos by Jo-Ann Clark Green fingers are the extension of a verdant heart. Russel Page

5 Page 5 Eau Claire Area Master Gardener News September 2014 Several Master Gardeners volunteered their time to participate at the Eau Claire County 4-H Fair held at the Expo Center the weekend of July 25 th. The ECAMGA booth was set up on Friday and Saturday with volunteers answering a variety of questions and asked by those attending the fair. It is fun visiting with so many from the area, especially the young people. Not only did they have good questions, but were so enjoyable to talk to about their personal fair activities and involvement. The MG volunteers met with many visitors from the surrounding area and those who also visit with the Ask A Master Gardener booth at the Farmer s Market at Phoenix Park on Saturday mornings and volunteers were thanked often for the assistance received. It is so gratifying to know ECAMGA volunteers do make a difference. Those who were volunteering one or both days were Barb Huggins, Sally Anderson, Gary Mathis, Andy Heren, Dick Lienhart, Daria Hutchinson and Mikel Reise. All of the volunteers took turns viewing the kid s exhibitions of the fair, including art work, food displays, garden vegetables, flower arranging, house plants, sewing and so much more. In addition, all were also able to visit the barns and viewed the variety of animals raised by the 4-H members as their projects. Those of who participated look forward to continuing their Master Gardener involvement via the ECAMGA Ask a Master Gardener Booth.
