2 INTRODUCTION The NY NOW winter 2016 market was simply spectacular this season, buyers from around the globe came to find what's next and they did! From men's accessories to analog children's toys to decorative table tops, the products featured on the floor managed to capture every trend that is currently happening in the market. 3 Trend No. 1 Search for Simple Pleasures The first trend that spanned all categories at NY NOW was the search for simple pleasures. Products that fit this trend promoted the idea of enjoying the basics of life and being mindful calling for their users to be fully present in the moment. Key pieces included modern takes on classic books, coloring, playing old games like chess, growing plants, sewing and more. 4 Trend No. 2 Leave Technology at Home The second trend on the floor was the idea of ditching digital devices. As we are living in a overally connected world, we are being encouraged to leave technology at home or out of community settings. This trend was targeted at parents, and focused on a generation of children who are being raised by ipads. Because parents are relying on technology for entertainment, we are starting to see a large push for products that educate and entertain minus the digital factor. It's a return to REAL toys. For boys, we found durable, brightly colored gadgets and doodads that were easy to hold and were made to last. For girls, we found softer color palettes and materials used on everything from handmade knit dolls to play sets. For both sexes, interactive building sets or learning aids made of wood appear as though there will be a resurgence in traditional learning. 5 Trend No. 3 Become a Connoisseur The third trend, and perhaps our favorite, was the call for consumers to develop deep knowledge of a hobby or interest. Whether it is a love of coffee, a sweet spot for food, or a shopper aspiring to be a writer or artist, there are many new products coming to market that will help their purchases take them from ametuer to connoisseur in a short amount of time. We found that morning drink products dominated buyer interest. Manual coffee pour over, french press and grinder sets with Japanese or U.S. origins were most popular. For tea, loose leaf tea and accessories that could steep them are developing as strong of an interest as coffee. 6 Trend No. 4 Keep In Touch The fourth trend we spotted on the floor was quite interesting, as it also held a sub-trend within it. From journals to cards, gifts that encouraged the purchasers add a personal touch to communication in the form of written words and expressions of sentiment. To extend that idea of getting in touch, publishers have come out with amazingly unique coffee table, hobby and non-fiction books that are highly likely to be purchased by shoppers and mailed to family or friends. With paper, heavy card stock was present in almost all of the products being noticed by buyers. For journals, unique uses (like recycled books) and strong geometric design stood out. 7 Trend No. 5 Live A Colorfully Accented Life The fifth trend we spotted on the floor had to do with using color as an accent. While Kate Spade, Jonathan Adler and Ban.do kept color everywhere, most of the larger items on the show floor featured neutral colors and leveraged color in the accents. Couches, chairs and large sets of tabletop items beige, white, light grey, neutral or deep tones like navy or green. They were accented with metallics (silverware, vases, lamps), texture (woven seats of chairs, placemats, ceramics) and embroidered accent pieces (chargers, pillows, blankets).
