18 CREATING MOODBOARDS What is a mood board? Well, a mood board, or inspiration board, is a visual tool you can use to organise your creative ideas about style, colour and feel. It can be used to pull together ideas for a specific room in your house that you want to change, or a more general collage of anything that catches your fancy. Debbie Leigh iliv Senior Designer Interior design skills how to create moodboards Organise your creative ideas about style, colour and feel Tear sheets from magazines and catalogues, make photocopies from books, print out images you find online, collect photographs, postcards, bits of fabric or wallpaper these are all fair game. Once you ve collected a good thick stack of images (and this could take a month, or more!), sit down somewhere with room to spread out, and have a good look at what you ve chosen. Now is the time to look for themes in your images. What do you gravitate towards? Do you notice anything popping up in more than one image? Also use this as a chance to consider your colour palette. Narrow it down until you have a combination that s to your liking, and then stick with it! In the example on the opposite page we we were drawn to simple spaces in white and grey with a modern industrial edge, but enlivened with cheery art and accessories in sherbet hues. Once you have the idea for a general palette, add paint colours and fabric swatches to the board as well. If you were using this to plan, say, a living room, you would want to be sure you found examples of each item you would need for example, lamp, sofa, coffee table, and so on. Now is also the time to think about another practicality, budget. Think long term as well as short term: might you be able to make do with your existing chairs for a while so you can splurge on the table you really want? And remember, sometimes spending less can actually inspire creativity. As you get into the fine tuning of your plan, consider what will be your focal point for the room. In a room plan this might be wallpaper or a piece of art you love, a vibrant rug, or a special antique you have your eye on. Whatever it is, by building up your board around it you ensure that all of the pieces will complement one another. When it comes to actually putting your board together, play around and have fun! Using tape that allows you to stick and re-stick allows you to move around images, remove them or even fix them on a wall in the room you re creating. 16 To find out more visit us at

38 MEASURING FOR CURTAINS Measuring for curtains A B C Here s how the experts do it Width Start by measuring your curtain pole or track, not the window itself. If you re fitting a new pole or track, make sure it s somewhere between 15cm and 30cm wider than the window that s so you can draw the curtains clear of the window to let in more light. The best place to fix your pole or track to the wall is about 10cm to 15cm above the window itself. Tracks and rails Some curtain tracks have a central overlap. Just measure this separately then add it to your end-to-end measurement for the correct total width. Curtain Track Poles Make sure you measure the pole itself and not the end ornaments! Pencil pleat and pinch pleat headings If you have a curtain pole, find the right height by measuring from the bottom of the pole s rings to where you want the fabric to finish (we recommend one cm above the floor/window still or 15/20cm below a window sill). If you have a curtain track, measure from the top of the track. Tab top and eyelet headings In both cases measure from the top of the pole to where you want the fabric to finish. Remember that eyelet headings usually have around 3cm of curtain fabric above the pole don t forget to include this in your final figure! Sill Floor 3cm Drop If you want your curtains to reach to the floor we recommend you measure from the track, pole or rail to one cm above the floor (A). It s the same if you want your curtains to reach to a window sill - measure from the track, pole or rail to one cm above the sill itself (C). If you want your curtains to fall below a window sill measure to between 15cm and 20cm down from the sill (B). Alternatively, if the window has a radiator below it you can measure to about 3cm above the top of the radiator. Valances Make sure you measure the valance rail itself and the depth at both ends to arrive at your final figure. 39 MEASURING FOR CURTAINS The iliv guide to curtain headings A curtain heading is simply the name given to the bunched fabric at the top of a curtain. There are five main types, all of which we offer as part of the iliv range. Top tip Even if they look level, most curtains tracks and poles (and indeed windows and floors) aren t quite horizontal. Make sure you measure in a couple of places to take account of any variations, then use the shortest of your measurements to avoid your curtains dragging on the floor. Pencil Pleats Probably the most common pleat as they are neat, practical and work well with both tracks and poles. Pencil pleats also work with virtually all types of curtain fabric, making them extremely flexible. You can choose exactly how high you want the heading to extend above the track or pole the higher you go, the more luxurious it looks. Eyelet Headings Less formal than pinch pleats, eyelet headings have a contemporary feel. When the curtain is closed they create a soft, curving fold down the fabric and need far less material than other types of pleat. Eyelet headings only work with curtain poles, which should be fitted at least 15cm above the window. Pinch Pleats Sometimes called French pleats, pinch pleats give an elegant, classic look that s perfect for formal rooms. The pleats themselves are usually in groups of three separated by a space which opens up when the curtain is closed. When the curtain is opened the pleats creates neat, clean folds down the fabric. Pinch pleats work equally well on tracks or hanging from rings on a pole. Why not try Banding This modern, flexible style is perfect if you want to mix two or more fabrics in your curtain. As its name implies, banding involves combining a number of complementary fabrics to create something unique. The result is as imaginative and individual as you make it. Goblet Pleats Elegant and sophisticated, goblet pleats create a striking look and are ideal for use with longer windows. Choose rich jacquard or tapestry fabrics and combine them with lavish rope ties for a truly luxurious look. Perfect for creating a striking interior! 37
