This was the first recorded upgrade of sitting chair that contoured to human shape and aesthetics. (Of course, not all sitting furniture is functionally timeless. Imagine eating pasta one-handed while reclining on an ancient Roman dining couch. It helped that wealthy Romans had servants.) EXAMPLE: The fifth-century tombstone of Xanthippos, a Greek shoemaker. Common man still used bench and stool and, chairs were reserved for Kings and nobles. EXAMPLE: Basic Middle Age Stool Design 17 th - 18 TH CENTURY AD In this period, decorative carvings and elaborate details took the centre stage in chair design. Baroque and Rococo artistic movements took over art scene of 17th and 18th centuries. EXAMPLE: THE THRONE Palace of Versailles

6 WHAT IS UX: A Layman s explanation INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION Industrial Revolution Mass production, free market thinking and colonization incentivized carpenters and manufacturers to innovate variations in chairs, once highly regarded and exclusive to Royalty, to bring it to common people. (The product design was released from the grasp of power and status of the few to market expectations. Though, the form was still not aligned to the functional need. The design was dictated by cost of production, distribution and sale.) EXAMPLE: THE NO. 14 CHAIR / Utilitarianism (The No. 14 chair is widely regarded as a design classic. It earned a gold medal when it was shown at the 1867 World Exposition in Paris. It has been praised by many designers and architects, including Le Corbusier, who said "Never was a better and more elegant design and a more precisely crafted and practical item created.")

7 WHAT IS UX: A Layman s explanation Inside to Outside Era The abstract functionality of the product dictates the form and if absolutely necessary, the beauty part too. Starting with the ergonomic nature of the product and its use first. Russian Constructivism & Dutch De Stijl Art Deco, Bauhaus and LC furnitures The Red and Blue Chair (1923) concretely set the order for Design Thinking of 20th and 21st century Function over Form. Bauhaus design school and many other designers work followed Function over Form ideology.
