2 2016 AIA Nevada Excellence in Design Awards PROJECT DESCRIPTION FORM Name of Project: Henriksen Butler Showroom Project Identification Number (Provided by AIA Nevada): UB16166 Project Category (choose one) - See category descriptions in the Call for Entries Packet: Unbuilt Architecture Type of Project: Commercial - Showroom Completion Date: Summer 2017 Type of Construction: II-A Materials Used: Existing brick, perforated weathered steel, steel and high-efficiency glazing Building Area: 4,800 sf Statement of Design Approach (describe initial thinking and considerations for the project): Located in Downtown Las Vegas adjacent to the Arts District, the Henriksen Butler Showroom contributes to the ongoing revitalization of the Downtown area that has been actively attracting a variety of entrepreneurs into this expanded art community, helping to create a more vibrant and walkable downtown The overall goal behind the proposed building is to embrace and showcase the Henriksen Butler Brand with minimal yet powerful interventions to the existing building - MAINTAIN - REUSE - REPURPOSE are key driving forces of design. 3 2016 AIA Nevada Excellence in Design Awards PROJECT DESCRIPTION FORM Name of Project: Henriksen Butler Showroom Project Identification Number (Provided by AIA Nevada): UB16166 Narrative (how the initial thinking and considerations for the project were implemented and executed - Limited To 400 Words): AIA Las Vegas / Nevada 401 S. 4th Street Suite 175 Las Vegas, NV t The existing building structure and shell are formally maintained with minimal exterior interventions that alludes to the simplicity of the Henriksen Butler brand. The existing grey brick is power cleaned around the entire facility. The main entry planned to capture street presence along Charleston Boulevard is furred out to create a pure box Existing building openings are maintained and along the south elevation they are enlarged to create connections between the interior open office showroom space and patio space beyond. A steel trellis composed of rectangular tube steel sections protects the building from south sun exposure, while creating a canopy that highlights the entry and provides safe respite for showroom users and visitors A horizontal wood screen completes the patio enclosure providing a warm feel to the interior space beyond. Native desert sculptural landscape, rhythmically placed, softens building edges and helps filter views into the interior showroom space The HB logo / brand is introduced to the main facade at the entry piece. Horizontal steel trellis members turn vertically, and are painted red displaying the masked out and painted white HB logo that becomes an additional art piece within the larger Arts District Perforated / repurposed weathered steel panels anchored six inches away from the building create an interesting shadow play / composition that highlights the entry corner further. Perforated weathered steel is also introduced as a shading element along the east openings. Interior wood trusses are preserved and stained. Plywood panels placed in between trusses create a cavity that allows for denim insulation to be installed and upgrade the building s energy performance. The high barrel vault ceiling space with exposed trusses and infill plywood panels in between trusses creates a quiet space where the HB furniture brand becomes the jewel - mid-century modern design is showcased throughout. A series of interior skylights provide daylighting and LED lighting is provided throughout. Exisitng concrete floors are grinded and polished within the reception area, living room, and kitchen. Exposed aggregate concrete floors are planned at the exterior entry and patio. Sustinability is an inherent outcome of the projects main overall goal - MAINTAIN - REUSE - REPURPOSE
