(Hons) Product Design Lighting project - End of 2 nd year presentation During the academic year s final term, first six weeks; Second year Product Design students have the chance to get their hands dirty by building a full-sized, functioning prototype model of their individual lighting design concepts, using a low energy lighting source. It is the culmination of a year-long project, carrying out the full design process cycle from the initial design brief s research and inspiration, concept sketching and modelling, to in-depth material and production analysis, including user and environment centred specifications. It is a demanding six weeks that ends with the Lighting show presentation that is assessed as part of their degree year s results, by both faculty and external design profession industrialists. This year we were joined by Julie Campbell (Research and Development manager) at the medical products company, Eschmann Ltd in Lancing, plus Martyn Beaumont who runs a successful product design consultancy in Newhaven called Design and Product. It was an enjoyable and successful event. See the photos below and a brief description for some of student s Lighting design concept work. Second year product Design students Smiling faces all round shows the relief after a successful presentation at the 2nd year Product Design Lighting show. Yamar Dione Crystal Clear, Crystal Pure UV water purifying Light. Yamar s retrofit water purifier has been designed for use in developing countries to neutralise bacteria in common water supplies using ultra violet light. His model was built using various sourced components including a toilet cistern to create the main body of the concept and an olive oil dispensing spout for the water nozzle! Aaron Pronger Climbing Array Light From a personal experience and interest for sports climbing, Aaron designed and modelled a robust and portable, multibulb module that can be positioned in various orientations to illuminate a climbing surface.

2 Tess Kenning Sens-O-light Arthritic lamp for the elderly A strikingly created lamp that used subtle materials in a simple form. The low-energy LED strips created an overall luminescent effect that is activated by proximity sensors so that potential users with arthritic problems need not have to physically interact with the switch or other awkward operations. Georgia Barrett Road-side Kerb light After considering what modelling materials to use for prototyping her Kerb Light, Georgia decided to use one that is commonly used in design consultancies for quick and realistic aesthetic concept design. Blue-foam as it is called, takes practice to master but Georgia created a full-sized working light that is intended to illuminate pathways and dimly lit roads for added security. Ben Beagley Illuminix Self-supporting, car maintenance light Inspiration came to Ben from the frustration of trying to fix an engine component under the bonnet of his car one dark and wet evening. To solve this problem in future, Ben designed and built a light that can be magnetically attached to the metal chassis of a car body, so leaving both hands free to carry out the job in hand. The model was built by adapting plastic tubing for the main body, a swivel joint, ultra-bright white LEDs and neodymium magnets.

3 Wen Maluki Lighting Clothes Hook Where s a hook to hang your coat on when you need it?! Wen devised a solution that you can hang up to six garments on. It is designed to be a rotating globe with six radial hooks incorporated. So that the hooks are easy to find in dark areas, they are lit up using LEDs and the globe itself is illuminated for visual effect. Simeon Castle LightTiles - Multi positionable, Office Ceiling Tile system Many interior retail and office open spaces use false ceiling and lighting tiles supported by aluminium rails and grids. These can be difficult to service and alter their layouts. This system designed, is a quick and easy, push off and on, blank and lighting tile format that needs no wiring connections and is safe for anyone to use. James Morgan 3 in 1 Distribution Light James used several traditional and advanced prototyping processes to build his lighting model. He created a virtual model of the light s main body using Computer Aided Design software and then had this rapid prototyped in the university workshops. Other parts of the light that were made used wood for the base and modular torch ends, plus polypropylene sheet for the central lens screen. Scott Mighall Modulight Alternative forms light. This table lamp was inspired by the classic 1930 s AnglePoise light, but was here updated to incorporate more than just one format for use. It is both a traditional table lamp, a modern low profile ambient lamp, as well as a purposeful and directional office light similar to the AnglePoise style. Seen here at the presentation, Scott produced a high quality model as well as numerous associated marketing and promotional media.

4 Demosthenis Katsouris Bike Light Design with traffic indicator. Whilst cycling on Brighton s busy roads and trying to give directions to other traffic, the cyclist has to temporality take a hand off the handlebars. This is considered potentially too dangerous by Demos and he developed a bicycle light that is also a direction indicator. The light s body was complex in detail and has been rapid prototyped with the attachment strap and switch being modelled by hand using various materials. Although not trained as an electronics engineer, the microcircuits and electronics were sourced and fitted by him. Irena Petrovic Genesis Religiously oriented ambient light Irena comes from Serbia and many houses and buildings traditionally use candles as symbols of religious festivities and family occasions. Her light concept takes many of the symbols and materials that are long-established and associated with these events and then uses them to inherently add context to what is a new lighting format to an old custom. The lamp produced is a full-sized, aesthetical and functional model. Max Reynard Brightsource Adaptable eco flood light This concept was produced in our workshops by Max using wooden ply-board to replicate what would be a polymer or metal shell body and lamp heads. The lamp heads with halogen bulbs, plus the telescopic central support have been built to fully replicate the multi-directional and extendable features of this modern flood light. It s intended environments of use would be both workplaces and outside events. Samuel Hayes 4 in 1 Supertorch Camping light/torch This concept allows campers to use the light as both a hanging lamp to illuminate the inside of a tent and outside areas. Alternatively, it can also be used as a personal torch when needed.

5 Richard Ogodeton Baseball-style, Cap Light This is an imaginative and potentially useful idea for a new type of safety hat. It adds additional function and alternative context to a generic baseball cap. This format for the cap could be used for anything from service personnel working in hazardous areas sports needing headwear such as skateboarding and cycling. It incorporates internal foam padded areas for impact protection as well as a solar powered front multi-led lamp for night use. It was made by Richard using both bought and workshop made and fitted components.
