The beautiful landscape of this region sees the alternation of sandy and rocky coasts. It also consists predominantly of plains and there are a few hilly areas. The heel of Italy is also a region with a strong historical and artistic imprint, whose first human settlement dates back to 250,000 years ago. Puglia has been a conquered land and has seen a succession of peoples and civilisations who have left their testimonies. Puglia s artistic heritage is openly visible but also boasts many and prestigious museums and archeological sites. Puglia has three sites which are included on the list of World Heritage Sites: Castel del Monte, Trulli of Alberobello, Santuario San Michele Arcangelo.
