3 SPACE 2 dimensional ( a flat surface, floor or wall) or 3 dimensional, the area designers create a design with in.

4 FORM AND SHAPE Form-3 dimensional, length, width and depth Shape 2 dimensional only- length and width. Solid objects that require space.

5 TEXTURE: The surface of an object. can be experienced by sight and touch. Everything has texture.

6 COLOR: Derived from the reflection of light. 3 properties :hue, value and intensity. Designers organize colors using different schemes to evoke feelings, emotion, or theme.

7 LINE: Lines can lead the eye. Lines can be used to achieve balance. One line should dominate in an interior with a secondary line following. Too many lines create an undesirable effect.

14 CONVEYING FEELINGS WITH LINES: Types of lines- Horizontal- rest, repose, calm Vertical- strength, masculine Curved- feminine, calm, freedom Diagonal- action, movement Zigzag- action, excitement, confusion

15 LINE ACTIVITY: Find two different pictures of rooms you like. Glue in notebook. Using a pen or Sharpie, identify the dominate line and secondary line in each room. Describe the effects of line in the room.

16 SPACE: The three dimensional area that designers work with, as well as the area around or between objects. Designers must consider : the overall design space and the arrangement within the space.

17 Large spaces- sense of freedom or luxury Or Feelings of loneliness, uncomfortable.

18 Well designed small spaces can be positive, safe and secure. Poorly designed small spaces can be confining, cramped.

19 ARRANGING SPACE: How could you make a small space feel larger? Keep as much space open as possible. Select small furniture pieces with plain design. Use mirrors to visually enlarge the space. Choose furniture with a dual purpose.

20 ARRANGING LARGE SPACES: Divide the space. Use small clusters of furniture. Use area rugs to divide the space.

21 ACTIVITY: Choose two situations below, find a photo of a room that illustrates the idea. Attach in your notebook, and write a statement about how you perceive the mood in the room. A large space mainly empty. A large space that has been divided. A small space that is rather empty. A small space that is filled.

22 FORM AND SHAPE: Can be two or three dimensional. Shape is Two Dimensional- has length and width only Form is Three Dimensional- has length, width and depth Refers to solid objects, which require space, also referred to as shape.

23 TYPES OF FORM: Realistic Form- communicates lifelike, traditional and familiar feeling, example a chair, it s easy to recognize. Abstract Form- rearranges or stylizes a recognizable object. Has traits that look like the real object but are altered.

25 Geometric Form-uses squares Circles triangles, rectangles, cones, cylinders Free Form-random and flowing, found in nature, plants, stone, wood, etc.

26 ACHIEVING EFFECTS WITH FORM: Large, heavy objects- feeling of stability, solidness. Incorrectly placed object can create the appearance of instability. Forms can have visual weight Form should follow function.

27 HARMONIOUS DESIGN/ COMPLEMENTARY STYLE: Styles are harmonious because of similarities in size, shape or color.

31 FORM ASSIGNMENT: Using your magazines find an example of each type of form: Realistic Abstract Geometric ( one shape only) Free form Cut out, glue in notebook, and label each.
