Residential Excellence Residential Excellence Private Residence in the Ozarks Ozark, Missouri Producer Member: Architectural Cast Stone, Inc. Wichita, Kansas Architect: Euro World Design
Private Residence in the Ozarks Residential Excellence What is the scope of the project? This recently completed private residence on the Lake of the Ozarks uses cast stone extensively throughout. Cast stone was chosen for a wide range of applications including: veneer; cornices; surrounds for doors, windows, and arches; keystones; large and small corbels; column caps; sills; and large ornamental details over the garage and entry.
Private Residence in the Ozarks Residential Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast stone elements enhance the overall design of the home and add tremendous character to the home's castle-like appearance. The cast stone highlights key features of the design and the smooth texture creates a nice contrast with the rough natural stone cladding. The color of the cast stone complements the stone cladding, while the subtle contrast still allows the cast stone to stand out.
Private Residence in the Ozarks Residential Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of this project? Cast stone plays a critical role in establishing the character of the home. We worked closely with the builder and homeowners to select elements that would reflect the home's eclectic, whimsical style. Without the cast stone, the home would be lacking the pieces that elevate it from a great home to a showstopper.
Private Residence in the Ozarks Residential Excellence Judges Comments Cast stone tied into arch well curve details well done The level of complexity of the curves Dramatic The use of glass railings worked with cast stone Restrained us of cast stone
Commercial Excellence Commercial Excellence The Carter Houston, Texas Producer Member: Siteworks, Inc. Houston, Texas Architect: Bennett Foster / GDA Architects, LLC.
The Carter Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This was new construction of a twenty story, multi-family residential project located in Houston s museum district. This project utilized a multi-color cast stone blend for the veneer on the first three floors of the entire building, as well as the five-story main entry.
The Carter Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? The multi-colored cast stone, with its rectilinear reveals are reminiscent of masonry aspects of the Art Deco style. Making the cast stone the primary architectural feature of this building.
The Carter Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The method used to manufacture the multi-colored stone ensured that every piece was not only unique, but also blended in well with the pieces surrounding it; enhancing the properties of the other materials and giving the project an exceptional and uncommon appearance.
The Carter Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Detail successful design and construction The mottled color of the stone really was impressive and consistent without changing the natural color Joint work is sharp Consistent Shadow lines created from mortar use
Commercial Excellence Commercial Excellence Christ Church Raleigh, North Carolina Producer Member: Cast Stone Systems Warrenton, North Carolina Architect: Clearscapes Architecture & Art
Christ Church Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This project was an addition to the Christ Episcopal Church, originally constructed in This particular addition included conference rooms and a new main entrance for parishioners.
Christ Church Commercial Excellence ORGINAL What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast stone was used to create columns, archways, window sills, and landscaping features for the newest addition of the expanding church. The existing structure, as shown in the two pictures labeled Original, used darker stone for the columns and archways, so the cast stone was made in a darker gray to match.
Christ Church Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The use of cast stone was vital to the success of this project, as it complemented and enhanced the appearance of the original structure. The pointed arches and detailed columns, constructed in a unique darker gray, added a slight Gothic style to the stone church.
Christ Church Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Cast stone blends into the natural stone well Worked cast stone into rusticated stone in a unique color Appropriate for the design of a church Like a jewel of a building
Restoration Excellence Restoration Excellence Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Miami, Florida Producer Member: Premier Stoneworks, LLC. Delray Beach, Florida Architect: William B. Medellin Architect, P.A.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Restoration Excellence AFTER AFTER Arches, Capitals, Cornice & Columns AFTER BEFORE What is the scope of the project? The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a perfect example of a true classical historical restoration. Built in the early 20th century it is a significant piece of Miami s history. This high-profile project required us to restore the deteriorating architectural elements that were spalling and falling off the villa s exterior and interior east elevation. The scope included manufacturing and installation of massive columns including the enormous sub base assembly which was 68 x58x16 in dimension and weight over 3,000 pounds. The scope also included the iconic arches and the beautiful ornate connecting entablatures.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Restoration Excellence Arch & Columns AFTER AFTER BEFORE AFTER What is the role of Cast Stone? Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is recognized as one of the top tourist destinations worldwide and one of the country s most intact remaining estates from the Gilded Age. The entire estate is adorned with cast stone that unfortunately due to poor quality has significantly deteriorated over time. Cast stone adorns every window, arch, balcony, corner, all four elevations and carries out beyond to the gardens. Liquid rubber was used to capture what was left of the original pieces in order to pick up all the details. The pieces are brand new yet, the creative craftsmen made it look old as if time stood still.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Restoration Excellence BEFORE AFTER How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? AFTER The cast stone played a crucial role in the success of this historical restoration because, not only does it ensure durability but, it also allows to illustrate the distinctive architecture and history of Miami. Vizcaya is a national treasure and registered historical landmark. It is also visited and photographed by visitors from around the world. It is because of high quality Cast Stone that Vizcaya can be fully restored and withstand the test of time. This historical restoration required precision, attention to details, and high level of craftsmanship
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Texture blends into the original and meant to look old Joints and coloration done well Successful restoration, not a jarring contrast to what was originally there Impressive - a clear winner
Restoration Excellence Restoration Excellence Cameron Indoor Stadium Durham, North Carolina Producer Member: Cast Stone Systems, Inc. Warrenton, North Carolina Architect: Beck Architecture
Cameron Indoor Stadium Restoration Excellence AFTER EXPANSION BEFORE EXPANSION What is the scope of the project? This project was an expansion of the original Cameron Indoor Stadium on the campus of Duke University.
Cameron Indoor Stadium Restoration Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast stone was used to encase the windows and doors of the exterior elevations, creating a bright contrast against the darker colors of the Duke Stone used throughout the building. Additionally, cast stone was used to construct the bases of two busts and the wall caps of landscaping walls around the building.
Cameron Indoor Stadium Restoration Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The use of cast stone was critical to the success of this project because it perfectly complements the Duke Stone used on this building and throughout campus. Cast stone also provided the opportunity to create incredibly detailed arches and window cases, adding to the unique appearance of this famed building.
Cameron Indoor Stadium Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Impressive amount of work that is well-done Can t tell the before from the after and not overdone - sensitive to the original
Hardscape Excellence Hardscape Excellence Millennium Park Peristyle Chicago, Illinois Producer Member: Architectural Cast Stone West Chicago, Illinois Architect: OWP&P Architects
Millennium Park Peristyle Hardscape Excellence Skidmore Owens and Merrill (SOM), the original project architect, chose an imported French limestone because of its perceived higher quality and value. Engraved into the tall, radial limestone base panels of the peristyle were the names of the principal benefactors of the park. Within 10 years of installation the limestone was noticeably failing and by 2016 donor names were becoming illegible. We were contracted to replace all of the limestone from the column bases down including; the radial base; tall radial panels; radial wall caps; radial fountain panels and coping; urn bases assemblies and urns; and light poles. The city recently initiated a fundraising campaign to fund future improvements in the park and when complete we will sandblast, into the tall radial panels, the names of both the original donors and the new donors. What is the scope of the project?
Millennium Park Peristyle Hardscape Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? The role of cast stone was both to replace the failing limestone and to provide a suitable alternative. The observed durability of the cast stone used in the Park in the past coupled with the CSI ten year warranty gave the parks management the comfort level they needed to proceed.
Millennium Park Peristyle Hardscape Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The cast stone could be manufactured to identically replicate the limestone it was replacing and demonstrated to the park s management that it was more durable than the limestone. Because cast stone is a molded product, and domestically produced, the construction schedule was measurably reduced when compared to using limestone. Given the different texture of the limestone, as a result of its failing surface, the architect wanted the cast stone to be a slightly different color than the limestone to avoid the appearances of a poor match. With cast stone, and utilizing iron oxide pigments, there is an almost unlimited ability to control the color of the cast stone, versus the very limited color options available in natural stone. As a result we were able to achieve the exact color the architect was looking for.
Millennium Park Peristyle Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Impressive how the cast stone is indistinguishable from limestone Large scale Blended pieces well color, etc. High degree of difficulty
Hardscape Excellence Hardscape Excellence Houston Marriott Marquis Houston, Texas Producer Member: Siteworks, Inc. Houston, Texas Architect: Nathaniel Burger / Huitt-Zollars
Houston Marriott Marquis Hardscape Excellence What is the scope of the project? This project was new construction of an upscale hotel in downtown Houston.
Houston Marriott Marquis Hardscape Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? This submission is the 6th floor amenities deck, which includes a lap pool, multiple planters and the Texas shaped lazy river, all of which utilize cast stone coping. (There is also some flat planter coping made from natural limestone. This is the stone with significant color variation.)
Houston Marriott Marquis Hardscape Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? This hotel was built to be the headquarters for Super Bowl LI, held in Houston February Cast stone was selected over natural limestone for all of the complicated pieces because both the cost and lead time were significantly lower. The hotel was opened on time, less than a month before the Super Bowl. The pool coping molds were particularly difficult because the stainless steel Texas shaped pool basin was delivered at the same time the cast stone was required to be on site, so no field measurements were possible. Nearly two hundred different radiused molds were needed in the manufacturing of the cast stone.
Houston Marriott Marquis Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Every one of the parts marries up with a smooth transition and the complex sheer number of pieces well done Impressive in its complexity Amazing project
Unique Architectural Feature Unique Architectural Feature Excellence Private Residence - Chimneys Private Location Producer Member: Sun Precast Company Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania Architect: D Alessio Inspired Architectural Designs
Private Residence - Chimneys Unique Architectural Feature What is the scope of the project? This unique application of Cast Stone called for the fabrication of very ornate custom Cast Stone chimney extensions for a large private estate.
Private Residence - Chimneys Unique Architectural Feature What is the role of Cast Stone? The role of cast stone was to create stunning visual appeal by the incorporation of highly decorative chimney extension, intended to replicate old world architecture.
Private Residence - Chimneys Unique Architectural Feature How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? 100+ years ago, these type of elements would have been handcrafted onsite, many times out of individual bricks. The custom cast stone elements replicated this old-world architecture, and allowed the units to be installed very quickly onsite. The chimneys create not only stunning visual interest, but also serve the utility function of chimney extensions.
Private Residence - Chimneys Unique Architectural Feature Judges Comments Complexity is impressive and each one is different Difficulty in design, production and installation True to the style and supports the architect Beautiful
Commercial Excellence Architect s Choice Sundance East - Palace Block Building Fort Worth, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas Architect: David M. Schwarz Architects
Sundance East - Palace Block Building Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a renovation of a portion of the Sundance Palace Theater in Sundance Square Fort Worth, Texas. The façade was redesigned to stand out among all the other styles of architecture.
Sundance East - Palace Block Building Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? The architect required highly detailed patterns and designs to create a theme that everyone would notice. The façade was designed to be a focal point and distinguishing grand entry.
Sundance East - Palace Block Building Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The fish design pattern on the jamb and arch insinuated a grand theater theme. And the addition of a large protruding decorative keystone that was a hand carved original model. All this was then topped out with a massive cornice, bracket, and dentil design.
Sundance East - Palace Block Building Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Balance of well-designed, well-executed and good use of materials Lovely use of cast stone design and production Intricacy is amazing The cast stone highlights the whimsical nature Small building but well-done What he expected when he agreed to be a judge

Manufacturing Excellence Manufacturing Excellence Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Raleigh, North Carolina Producer Member: Cast Stone Systems, Inc. Warrenton, North Carolina Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Manufacturing Excellence What is the scope of the project? The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was a new building constructed for the Diocese of Raleigh and is one of the largest cathedrals in the United States. The new cathedral measures at 44,000 square feet with a seating capacity of 2,000 individuals. Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Manufacturing Excellence What special molding or casting techniques were necessary to illustrate the Architect s concept on the project? This project utilized both the wet cast and the dry tamp processes. Molds were constructed using wood, plaster, fiberglass, and rubber. The architect was involved throughout the design of the shop drawings. Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Manufacturing Excellence Degree of Difficulty The degree of difficulty is high considering the challenge to coordinate the attachments required for the circular windows, the gables, and the radius chapel area. Additionally, there are no random colors on the project as can be viewed on the attached shop drawings. This added a great deal of complexity to the management of the project. Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Manufacturing Excellence Were there unique project requirements that presented particular challenges and how were they met? The arched areas on the chapel were originally designed to be in pieces, however there were issues with attachment. These pieces were combined and fabricated on a compound radius. There was very little room for error mainly due to the fact that the false joints had to align. There are a wide variety of elements on the project that were made more complicated due to the difficulties of attachment. These areas were generally combined and made larger which helped the finished project but made our work more difficult. Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral Manufacturing Excellence Judges Comments In depth and scope of the entry is unbelievable All the radius arches Balcony extending over the entry Color consistent Manufacturing Excellence Award Winners
