2 Introduction to AstroPower Welcome to AstroPower! AstroPower is one of the world s fastest-growing solar electric power companies involved in many innovative new solar projects. Their headquarters in Newark, Delaware, was constructed to creatively demonstrate AstroPower s commitment to bringing the benefits of clean renewable energy to the environment.

3 Building Mission The mission of the building was to show their clients that their products are Green design oriented Attractive to look at Easy to integrate into any building design Dependable Worth their cost in building energy savings

4 Building Functions The building serves several different functions: To serve as headquarters and main office for the AstroPower staff. To serve as a manufacturing plant for all AstroPower products. To showcase their product not only in showroom format, but by the actual building design elements.

5 Building Pictures The building is situated so that the main façade faces south east, a Green Design guideline.

9 Lighting Design Theme The new lighting design theme will Incorporate blue color to mimic the sky Accentuate the solar cells throughout the building Work with the natural daylighting that currently exists

10 Introduction of Lighting Redesign Spaces Out of all the rooms and regions in the AstroPower Headquarters, five different areas were selected to redesign An open office with work stations on the second floor A lunch room with a glass curtain wall on the first floor A conference room with a glass curtain wall on the first floor An impressive two-story lobby with atrium and skylight The building s main entranceway

11 Open Office Area The open office is on the second floor, and features hexagonal work stations separated by partitions. It is bordered on the east by an open skylight and view to the first floor, and on the west a glass curtain wall.

16 Open Office Area To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Two hanging linear fluorescent pendants with blue LED lights per work station, similar to those shown below: Compact Fluorescent downlights down inbetween cubicles

18 Lunch Room The Lunch Room is on the first floor right off the atrium style lobby. It features glass inlays to let light in from the lobby, along with a glass curtain wall along it s south façade, allowing light to pour into the space.

22 Lunch Room The goals of the Lighting redesign are To add color to the space to mimic the outdoors To have the walls stand out more using indirect lighting methods To use visually interesting luminaires above the tables

23 Lunch Room To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Fluorescent wall washers along the perimeter of all walls (excluding the glass façade) similar to the pictures below, but with blue tinting. Similar to the designs shown here

24 Lunch Room To achieve these goals, the redesign concept also will feature Pendant fixtures that hang over the table surfaces, similar to the ones shown below: Similar to concepts like these

27 Conference Room The Conference Room is on the first floor right off the atrium style lobby. It features a trayed ceiling along with a glass façade along the south wall, allowing lots of natural daylight.

31 Conference Room The goals of the Lighting redesign are To take advantage of the rooms architectural piece, the trayed ceiling To add color to the space to mimic the outdoors To attract more attention to the walls by adding solar cells that will be illuminated from the new lighting scheme

32 Conference Room To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Fluorescent wall washers along the perimeter of all walls (excluding the glass façade) similar to the picture below but with a blue tint. Design concept similar to scene showed here

33 Conference Room To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Fluorescent lamps hidden in a hollowed out trough in the center tray, providing an indirect, evenly distributed light source for the table, similar to the Lightscape rendering shown below Fluorescent inlay similar to this layout

35 Lobby The Lobby is a two-story atrium-style space that features balconies, many downlights, and an enormous skylight over the center, allowing for natural daylight from dusk until dawn.

40 Lobby The goals of the Lighting redesign are To take advantage of the rooms architectural piece, the high ceiling and balconies by showing them off more To highlight the skylight To wash all the walls with light so that in the evenings it still feels as though it is daytime.

41 Lobby To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature LED orientation luminaires around the balcony edges, similar to the picture below. Concept similar to the ones shown here

42 Lobby To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Fluorescent uplights around the perimeter of the first and second floor walls, similar to the picture below: Uplights that will draw attention upwards, like the scenes shown here

43 Lobby To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Replacing the Compact Fluorescent Downlights with HID Metal Hallide Downlights for brighter light beneath the dome so both levels will be lit adequately during evening hours. Similar to the downlight pictured to the left

45 Front Entranceway The Front Entranceway is the main entrance to the building, featuring an enclosed vestibule, and a covered portion outside of the doors.

47 Front Entranceway The goals of the Lighting redesign are To make the solar cells inlaid in the glass façade stand out even during evening hours. To continue the blue theme outdoors as a reflective image from the dark sky above. To make the covered door area stand out more to draw people in at night time

48 Front Entranceway To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Uplight the façade with wall washers with blue or green interchangeable lenses, producing a look similar to the one shown below, but with a blue or green tint. Wallwash similar to this but with blue or green tint

49 Front Entranceway To achieve these goals, the redesign concept will feature Highlight the entranceway with a flood of lights, so that upon viewing the exterior from far away, it is no question as to where you should enter, as shown (in a much larger scale) below) An entranceway that draws people to it, like the design shown here

51 Adjustable Controls A criterion for selecting fixtures for the redesign will be that they have Digital Adjustable Ballasts, allowing the users to turn down certain fixtures when daylight is prevalent. This will conserve energy This will put all the fixtures on a self-control level This will tie in to the redesign of the telecommunications infrastructure.

52 A Look Back at the Goals After sharing some ideas, it is important to look back and see if the goals stated for the redesign in the beginning were addressed. The new lighting theme will draw attention to the solar panels and show them off, attracting customers to their design, truly utilizing the building as a place to show off the product. The DALI ballasts will enable users to turn lights off when daylight is prevalent, thus enabling more natural daylight into the spaces. The lights on the exterior and around the balconies of the Lobby have the blue tone of the sky and the green tone of the earth, thus introducing an earthy atmosphere to the inside of the building that did not exist before.

53 Other Project Information Other areas not detailed in this proposal that will be integrated include: A detailed redesign of the telecommunications infrastructure. A full daylight analysis for the building throughout a year s time. An attempt to get the building LEED certified by an in depth look at where improvements can be made.
