3 SITE PHOTOGRAPHY: Project Summary BACKGROUND: The applicant, Kaloco Oil Company, represented by Art Solis of North Shore Signs, proposes one (1) new illuminated wall sign for the convenience store and awning fabric replacement for the existing Marathon station at 242 Waukegan Road. Signage The applicant is proposing a new box sign in the location of the previous box sign. The new box sign includes a blue and green face with white backer panel. The sign includes white letters in heights of 22.5 and 3.75 inches. The sign will be located in a similar location as the previous sign. Awning The existing convenience store has faded red awnings. The applicant is proposing to utilize the existing awning frames and replace the fabric with admiral blue fabric. The existing awning has closed ends and is proposed by the applicant to be replaced with closed ends, although the existing frame could be reused with either open or closed ends. The Awning Design Guidelines state that open ended awnings are preferred. 3

5 Appearance Commission Review APPEARANCE PLAN COMMENTS: Staff comments after evaluating the proposal for compliance with the Appearance Plan: Building Design Criteria from Appearance Plan: Quality of design and relationship to surroundings Good scale and harmonious conformance with neighboring development Materials with architectural character and harmony with adjoining buildings Building components with good proportions and relationship to one another Harmonious colors Avoidance of monotony; avoidance of inappropriate, incompatible, bizarre and exotic designs Staff comments: o The Appearance Commission should decide if the awning fabric replacement with closed ends is appropriate when the Design Guidelines state open ended awnings are preferred. The existing awnings currently have closed ends. o The petitioner shall bring color/material samples to the meeting. Sign Criteria from Appearance Plan: Compatibility with building architecture Compatibility with signs on adjoining buildings Harmony with surrounding landscape Good scale in relationship to surroundings Use of harmonious colors Staff comments: o The applicant should confirm the lower case letter heights in the Anna s portion of the signage. The uppercase A is proposed to be 22.5 inches. o The petitioner shall furnish material and color samples of all proposed signage for review by the Appearance Commission. POTENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACTS: The proposed signage is replacement signage for an existing business along a retail corridor of Waukegan Road. 5
